Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher for Pennycress Drought

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher, Research Associate, to study the molecular, physiological, and omics responses to drought in the field pennycress (Thlaspi arvense) to uncover the genes and pathways that control acclimation to drought and use them to engineer drought resistant plants. Field pennycress is an overwintering biofuel crop related to both canola and arabidopsis. The harvested oilseeds have many uses including cooking oil, animal feed, and particularly biojet fuel. As an overwintering cover crop pennycress  has many ecosystem services such as increasing biodiversity, preventing erosion, and sequestering carbon, all while being profitable for farmers to sell as biofuel. The goal of the project is to investigate genetic versatility, especially metabolic versatility, against drought to inform future plant metabolic engineering and breeding efforts. This is a highly collaborative project among several pioneering labs in plant physiology, genetics, and computational biology (iPREP).

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:

Postdoctoral researcher to model pennycress metabolism in response to drought.   We have developed computational pipelines to predict and annotate metabolic enzymes and pathways from sequenced genomes, which enables the generation of genome-scale metabolic networks. The successful candidate will leverage these resources in the Rhee Lab to model the metabolic networks field pennycress (Thlaspi arvense). We aim to identify key metabolic reactions that are involved in drought resistance as well as in resource allocation between shoot and root tissues.  The goal of the project is to investigate metabolic versatility against drought to inform future plant metabolic engineering and breeding efforts. This is a highly collaborative project among several pioneering labs in plant physiology, genetics, and computational biology (iPREP).

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:

Professors Appelo, Christlieb, Cheng, Lei, O’Shea and Verboncoeur from the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CMSE), invite applications from outstanding candidates for up to 6 fixed term research associate (Postdoctoral Researchers) positions in the broad areas of Computational Modeling and Data Science. These positions are part of a cluster hire related to 3 grant-funded projects centered around the general theme of multi-scale modeling of non-equilibrium transport.  One focus of these projects is the development of advanced scalable algorithms for modern hardware, involving both fluid and particle descriptions of plasmas, and leveraging advanced middleware programming paradigms such as Kokkos. Here the team seeks to develop high order structure-preserving scalable algorithms. A second focus of these projects centers on multi-scale modeling and blended computing, where advanced provably structure-preserving machine learning algorithms are hybridized with traditional algorithms to create new classes of scale-bridging algorithms. Aspects of this work involve developing new classes of structure-preserving machine learning methods as well as new classes of solvers capable of stably simulating multiscale problems using these blended algorithms. The third focus of these projects is the development of novel adaptive structure-preserving low rank and/or sparse grid algorithms for modeling of non-linear transport. Here, key advances will involve implicit formulations, the development of foundations of domain decomposition and the ability to address systems with complex geometry. These projects have a synergistic interplay with the overall goal of taming the curse of dimensionality in classes of problems whose efficient solution will permit the unlocking and understanding of key physical mechanisms in clean energy, space weather modeling, and the merger of neutron stars, to name but a few.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:

The TARDIS group is actively developing a radiative-transfer open-science framework (https://tardis-sn.github.io/) to understand the physics of astrophysical transients using data from current (ZTF, HST, JWST) and next-generation telescopes/surveys (LSST, WFIRST). The group has a specific focus on Type Ia progenitor problems, nucleosynthesis in neutron star mergers, progenitors of stripped core-collapse supernovae, and cosmology using Type IIP supernovae. Addressing these scientific questions requires the development of machine learning and statistical methodology. Thus, the larger global TARDIS collaboration encompasses not only astrophysicists but also accomplished researchers in statistics, neural networks, and general machine learning. The group at MSU is jointly based in the Department of Physics and Astronomy as well as the new interdisciplinary Department of Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:

The Michigan State University Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to enhance our growing team, help develop cutting edge stable isotope measurement methods, and apply these emergent tools to a suite of environmentally relevant scientific questions. We are assembling a well-equipped stable isotope laboratory with multiple isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) instruments and associated peripheral devices as well as an Obritrap mass spectrometer for use in stable isotope studies. We seek to leverage these capabilities to develop advanced spatially resolved and taxonomically specific techniques for investigating rhizosphere, soil, and other environmental samples. Spatially resolved analysis will be performed by laser ablation IRMS and we seek to improve spatial resolution as well as expand the isotopes capable of being analyzed. Taxon specific evaluation will leverage stable isotope analysis of new classes of molecular biomarkers to help evaluate nutrient exchange reactions in the rhizosphere and soil with a portion of the analysis using Orbitrap mass spectrometry. The successful candidate would be expected to take a collaborative lead in championing instrument development and technique demonstration inclusive of hardware modification, methods optimization, and preparing relevant samples for analysis. Willingness to be an active part of and contribute to interdisciplinary teams is essential and it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to and lead manuscripts, presentations, and reports as needed.

About Michigan State University, Michigan, United States – Official Website

Michigan State University (Michigan State, MSU) is a public land-grant research university in East Lansing, Michigan, founded in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, the first of its kind in the United States, predating the Agricultural College of Pennsylvania. After the introduction of the Morrill Act in 1862, the state designated the college a land-grant institution in 1863, making it the first of the land-grant colleges in the United States. The college became coeducational in 1870. In 1955, the state officially made the college a university, and the current name, Michigan State University, was adopted in 1964. Today, Michigan State is one of the largest universities in the United States (in terms of enrollment) and has approximately 634,300 living alumni worldwide. It affiliated with Oakland University (then known as the Oakland campus of Michigan State University), in Rochester Hills, until the university gained institutional independence in 1970.

The university is a member of the Association of American Universities and is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity”. The university’s campus houses the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, the W. J. Beal Botanical Garden, the Abrams Planetarium, the Wharton Center for Performing Arts, the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, and the country’s largest residence hall system.
