(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Two-year postdoc on Macroecological isotopic perspectives on past novel ecosystem dynamics

This postdoc project is part of the newly established Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere (ECONOVO), funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. Overall, ECONOVO aims to provide critically new perspectives on the future of the biosphere. Novel ecosystems (NEs) have species compositions or abiotic conditions without historical precedent, e.g., intercontinental species invasions and extraordinary warming. NEs are spreading fast and expected to be globally dominant by the late 21st century. Key drivers are climate change, globalization, and extirpation of large-sized organisms, resulting in ecosystems deviating from anything seen for millions of years. The spread of NEs is likely to profoundly affect biosphere functioning but how so is poorly understood at present. To address this complex theme, ECONOVO will take an unparalleled, interdisciplinary approach, integrating Big Data and field-based ecology, satellite-based remote sensing, archaeology, paleoecology, and population genomics to bridge this crucial knowledge gap.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc in metabolic reprogramming by selective autophagy

The goal of this project is to dissect the role of selective autophagy in metabolic adaptations to nutrient shifts. We have been systematically investigating autophagy-mediated metabolic regulation in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In particular, we will monitor cargo material, i.e., proteins and organelles, selectively delivered to vacuoles by autophagosomes during dynamic transitions of different carbon sources and from rich to poor nutrient conditions, by using a combination of genetic techniques and quantitative mass spectrometry-based proteomics. Simultaneously, we have been using high-throughput metabolomics to measure dynamic changes in extra- and intra-cellular metabolites and resolve the metabolic rewiring during the studied nutrient transitions. Next, we will integrate proteomics and metabolomics datasets by using constraint-based and kinetic models to identify metabolic reactions regulated by selective degradation of enzymes or enzyme regulators (e.g., transcription factors) by autophagy. Model-based predictions and relevance for cell survival will then be tested by point mutating these enzymes or regulators to specifically inhibit their down-regulation by selective autophagy. Key findings will also be studied in mammalian cells.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc: Understanding phosphatases in membrane-less organelles

Recently, it has been discovered cells contain a wide variety of membrane-less organelles. Unlike traditional organelles, membrane-less organelles can form as a reponse to stimuli, which often serves as regulatory switch of biochemical processes. The trigger for formation of these organelles is often changes in phosphorylation state regulated by kinases and phosphatases. It is thus crucial to understand how condensates affect these enzymes – which is the aim of this project. The project will mainly involve experimental biochemistry and biophysics but may also involve theoretical elements of quantitative modelling. There will be considerable room for the successful candidate to shape the project within the overall project theme.

(24) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  2-yr postdoc on Biodiversity Dynamics in Novel Ecosystems

This postdoc project will be part of the ECONOVO research theme 1: Diversity Dynamics, focused on understanding biodiversity dynamics in novel ecosystems (NEs) past and present. This position is a macroecological position focused on present-day NEs at a global scale. While it is well documented that biotic assemblages are changing across Earth and at accelerating rates, links to rising ecological and climate novelty remain poorly understood. With this position, we aim to overcome this knowledge gap and test whether basic biodiversity theory can predict observed dynamics in globally emerging NEs. Building on our previous work, the postdoc will lead the mapping of NEs globally by mobilizing large data sets on species distributions of native and non-native plants and vertebrates and integrating them with geospatial data on novel environments. Based hereon, the postdoc will lead the development of predictive models of NEs and by coupling this mapping to biodiversity data assess how NEs impact to assess general NE impacts on species diversity, testing if dynamics are predictable from theory. The postdoc is expected to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead at least two high-quality papers in this research area. It is also expected that the postdoc contributes to the project’s public outreach and teaching, as well as collaborating with other team members, including students, sharing skills, and helping to solve problems in the postdoc’s area of expertise.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position: Games as, through and for culture – Cultural game jams, culturally empowered youth and values-oriented collaboration between culture, industry and research

The EPIC-WE Horizon research and innovation project introduces cultural game jams, culture- and value-sensitive game-making and games through and for culture as a novel approach to empower young people as co-creators of European culture and shapers of their own futures in society, cultural institutions (CHIs) and creative industries (CIs). The backbone of the project is the EPIC-WE helix ecosystem – a transferable framework in which young people, CHIs, CIs and higher education institutions (HEIs) cooperate as actors in the ecosystem. EPIC-WE engages in cultural game jams to create games through and for culture inspired by cultural heritage. The framework explores the potentials of this approach as a method for strengthening European values, belonging and cultural participation. Through game-making activities, EPIC-WE will equip young people with cultural-creative imagination and competences to face societal challenges with curiosity, creativity, agency and imagination – what we call “empowered participation”. The project will be carried out as an ambitious Design-Based Research and innovation (DBR) action across three European sites, with EPIC-WE ecosystem actors co-creating and thereby developing, implementing and evaluating the proposed framework. The validated DBR innovations will be presented as accessible resources that enable organisations across Europe to replicate the EPIC-WE ecosystem, formats and methods. Through extensive research, capacity building and policy advocacy activities, EPIC-WE will ensure that the project’s results reach a wide range of European CHI, CI and HEI actors, including the game industry, civil society organisations and young people. The consortium constitutes a helix ecosystem in itself, bringing together leading research, cultural and creative sector organisations with multidisciplinary excellence in DBR, participatory and value-sensitive design, game design and the engagement of young people to empower them as future culture-makers and game-makers in CHIs, CIs and HEIs, and as value-sensitive agents of change in society.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Immunology of Viral Infections

Understanding how the immune system fights viruses represents one of the main challenges in modern-day science. At the Center for Immunology of Viral infections (CiViA), we study the first line of defense against viral infections, with the goal of describing hitherto unrecognized layers of the immune system and novel mechanisms mediating anti-viral defense. In this project, we will exploit genome-wide CRISPR screening technologies to identify genes affecting initiation and termination of interferon production as well as genes that directly interfere with and restrict such responses. One main objective is to identify and describe genes restricting immune signaling driven by pattern recognition receptors. The project involves further development of screening technologies and immune-based readouts in model cell lines. As one direction, we will be studying multicolor fluorescence-activated cell sorting in genome-wide screens for improved dissection of homeostasis-guarding signaling circuits in the first line of viral defense. Also, we will be adapting CRISPR screens in efforts directed at characterizing the role of noncoding RNA networks in regulating cellular responses to virus infection.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Two Postdocs in Visual Cultures of Artificial Intelligence

The successful applicants will be essential members of the research project ‘New Visions: Image Cultures in the Era of AI’ (funded by the Aarhus University Research Foundation and led by associate professor Lotte Philipsen). The project investigates how vision and image analysis in the field of AI informs and changes cultural understandings and uses of images. The project explores two overall questions: What aesthetic and epistemological consequences do new AI image practices have? and further, how do these consequences manifest themselves in a broader cultural and societal context? The primary activity of analysing cultural implications is conducted by comparing humanistic knowledge of vision and images with new practices in AI vision. More specifically, the research project provides thorough humanistic analyses of how the current technical redistribution of what or who is visible/invisible, viewer/viewed, image creator/consumer in contemporary AI vision practices relates to cultural redistributions of who has the power to look, decide what we look for, suggest how we act as objects of new gazes, and how we create and use images.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdocs in inflammation and cardiometabolic disease

Obesity significantly increases mortality, accounts for 6% of the European healthcare expenditure and results in enormous socio-economic costs.   Paradoxically, 30% of obese subjects present with an MHO phenotype, i.e. lacking the metabolic disorders commonly associated with obesity (e.g. diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension). Conversely, 24% of normal-weight individuals are MUL, with a 31% increased mortality due to metabolic disturbances that are similar to those affecting MUO. Currently it is not well established which molecular and metabolic changes contribute to the development of the metabolic unhealthy phenotype. Identification of the underlying mechanisms that promote metabolic health will be crucial to counter the burden of obesity and metabolic disease.
