PhD position summary/title: PhD in Network Statistics and Machine Learning

The main topic of research is network analysis and modelling using statistical and machine learning tools. Network data are ubiquitous in finance, social media, the economy, and business. Social networks play an increasingly important role in society. For example, the Reddit community WallStreetBets hyped the stock of GameStop (GME), causing a short squeeze and extremely volatile stock prices in early 2021. Similarly, statements made on social networks such as Twitter have been shown to impact public and voter opinions. Exemplifying how social networks directly affect the economy, this project focusses on studying network data with a specific interest in modelling and understanding how networks change over time. Change detection in an online fashion is a challenging task in networks of large size, a common property of social networks.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position Turning Odd Active Matter into Robots

Can we create animate synthetic materials that are simultaneously adaptive, active and autonomous? This dream has over the past years become tangible, thanks to the advent of robotic matter. Robotic matter combines the collective effects of condensed matter with the power of robotics and exhibits animate functionalities, such as pattern formation, controlled modification of the environment and locomotion. It opens exciting prospects for our fundamental understanding of far-from-equilibrium phenomena and for nascent applications such as non-invasive surgery or extra-terrestrial exploration—which demand materials to locomote without external control in complex and unpredictable environments. Despite these major developments in robotic matter, its properties remain hard to predict.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Entrepreneurship: “Studying the Social Evaluation of Startups”

Startups must obtain resources from a variety of stakeholders. This project is built around the idea that these stakeholders, including customers, employees, investors, and society at large, associate a unique and distinguishable character with organizations operating under the label “startup” (with variations including “tech startup”, “AI startup”, “scaleup”, “unicorn”, etc.). This is important because organizations, just like individuals, may either enjoy or suffer the consequences of being associated with certain labels and stereotypes. Regardless of other relevant considerations, simply being called a “startup” can therefore be linked with both positive and negative social evaluations. For example, cultural messages about startups associate these organizations with innovation, visionary leaders, and the underdog drive to disrupt industries. At the same time, however, startups may also and receive harsher judgments due to uncertainty about their underlying quality and potential or doubts about their legitimacy and credibility. This project aims to unpack the conditions under which the meaning associated with startup-related labels emerges and how such labels might independently shape evaluations and resource provision by different stakeholders. Answering such questions is crucial not only because it will contribute to theories of social evaluations in entrepreneurship and management, but also because the current hype around startups demands a better understanding of the power encapsulated in such labels, acknowledging their increasing strategic use (e.g., for competitive differentiation or persuasive stakeholder communication) and misuse (e.g., for stakeholder deception and other ethical lapses).

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on the study of double-weak decays

The XENONnT experiment at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory has the primary goal to detect interactions between xenon nuclei and Dark Matter (DM) particles. However, its exquisite sensitivity also makes it sensitive to rare Standard Model, and potentially beyond-the-Standard Model, processes. XENONnT is routinely measuring double-beta decay of 136Xe and in addition a first observation of double-beta capture on 124Xe has been made. The latter process established the longest ever observed lifetime of 10^22 years, indicating the rarity of these processes. Better understanding of these processes, will be crucial to a discovery of the even more rare double-weak processes without the neutrinos.

PhD position summary/title: 2 PhD Candidates: ‘The Developing Self and Achievement Inequality’

We are looking for two PhD candidates to study achievement inequality from a developmental-psychological perspective. Achievement inequality is one of the most defining problems of our time. Around the world, children from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds underperform in school relative to children from higher SES backgrounds, even when they have the same level of ability. This project, funded by an NWO Vidi grant awarded to Eddie Brummelman, studies the critical role of children’s self-views in achievement inequality. The project examines why children from lower SES backgrounds often develop negative views of themselves and their abilities, and how these negative self-views can perpetuate socioeconomic disparities in educational achievement and mental health. To do so, this project will focus on the transactions between children and their teachers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Cell-water Structure and Dynamics

Water in living cells contains a high concentration of biomolecules, that can significantly alter its properties (see https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-017-00858-0). There are even cells (bacterial spores, for instance) in which all chemistry is put to a standstill: these cells can survive for years in a dried-out, chemically ‘frozen’ state, from which they can recover completely and continue living as if nothing happened. The physical and chemical mechanisms underlying this suspended metabolism are still a mystery. In this PhD project, you will help to solve this mystery by using state-of-the-art experimental methods to investigate the structure and dynamics of water and proteins in living cells capable of surviving extreme circumstances, such as drought and thermal shock. Knowledge of how some cells manage to survive complete desiccation for such long periods of time can help to develop strategies for the dry, room-temperature storage of blood and vaccines (important for third-world countries), but potentially even for the dry storage of entire organisms. The project will be carried out at the University of Amsterdam, in cooperation with the Max-Planck Institute in Mainz.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position on Side-Channel Attacks on Quantum Devices Used in Quantum Networks

Are you fascinated by security? Are you willing to take on the challenge of securing the next generation of computer systems and networks? Do you like to work in a team of young researchers? We are seeking a PhD candidate who is interested in interdisciplinary research on side-channel attacks against quantum devices used in quantum networks and beyond. Quantum technologies are being developed at a fast page. On the one hand, progress on the development of quantum computers poses a serious threat for our security infrastructure, especially for public-key cryptography. On the other hand, quantum components bring novel opportunities since they will be integrated in our networks and could bring novel security functionalities. However, quantum components are mostly experimental, and their security is yet to be studied and assessed in depth. In particular, little is known about their susceptibility against side-channel and physical attacks and, as a direct consequence, we do not know if and which countermeasures can be applied.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Positions in Experimental Quantum Physics

In this project you will build the first continuous atom laser. An atom laser is a beam of atoms that is described by a coherent matter wave. So far only short atom laser pulses have been created by outcoupling a beam of atoms from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The laser stops working when all atoms of the BEC have been outcoupled, requiring the creation of a new BEC for the next atom laser pulse. BEC creation is usually a lengthy process, requiring several cooling stages to be executed one after the other in time. We have built a machine that can execute these stages one after the other in space, enabling us to Bose-Einstein condense continuously [1]. This allows us to create a BEC that lasts as long as we want. It’s the atomic equivalent of an optical laser with perfectly reflective cavity mirrors. Your goal will be to take the next step and outcouple the first continuous atom laser beam from the BEC. Such a beam would be an ideal source for continuous atom interferometry [2]. A second goal of the project is to create interesting driven-dissipative quantum systems and study their properties.

PhD position summary/title: 2 PhDs for project about the causes and consequences of societal threat perceptions

This project starts with the observations that with a pandemic, the war in Ukriane, climate change, terrorist attacks, and financial meltdowns, we have in the last twenty years experienced multiple threats that potentially could have (or will in the future) fundamentally alter our way of life. Threats have adverse effects when they erode democratic stability by sparking violence and fuelling support for anti-democratic politics. However, threats might benefit society when they trigger desired behaviour, such as reducing the eco-footprint or getting a vaccination. Given the complex role of threat in society, it is crucial to understand better the processes underlying people’s threat perceptions and develop strategies for mitigating the adverse effects and stimulating the beneficial effects of threat perceptions on democracy and society. This project bridges theories from communication science, psychology, and neuroscience by the overarching research question: How do people perceive and regulate threats and adopt political attitudes and behaviours to counter these threats.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Entrepreneurship & Innovation

The arts and entertainment sectors, part of the creative and cultural industries, are characterized by a complex web of patterns of influence. These influence patterns can take many forms, such as the transfer of ideas and techniques between different (artistic) disciplines, the adoption of (aesthetic) styles and trends by different artists and organizations, and the flow of resources and funding between different sectors. One of the key ways in which influence operates is through the fashioning, dissemination, and adoption of creative ideas. This means that influence relations are often characterized by a high degree of cross-pollination, with ideas and trends flowing freely between different sectors or disciplines. By examining the influence patterns between different cultural and creative disciplines – the data can take the form of text, static images, and/or video – we can better understand the mechanisms that drive the flow of ideas and techniques across diverse domains and identify the (key) drivers of innovation within and across sectors. For instance, directors and writers in the movie/TV industry may borrow elements from other films, art, or books to create new and original stories. Similarly, in the music industry, artists and musicians may draw inspiration from a wide range of sources, including other genres of music, art forms, and even technology. Blending different styles and influences can create new and innovative works and/or expand upon existing artistic traditions. Overall, the patterns of influence within the arts and entertainment industries are intricate, with new trends and styles emerging all the time. By studying these influence patterns, we can understand the factors that drive innovation and success within these industries, which may provide greater insights into how these factors can be harnessed to support entrepreneurship and growth. In addition, studying the influence relations can also shed light on the broader sociocultural forces that shape these industries, such as the role of entrepreneurs, cultural institutions, and commercial enterprises, the impact of technological innovation, and the influence of global trends and market forces.
