26 Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Hamburg, Germany

You will participate within a BMBF funded project on the optimization of laser pulses for free electron lasers applying modern data-driven approaches to model and simulate the beam generation and dynamics in photoinjectors. The work is within a joint R&D team of the Helmholtz Center DESY (project lead), the Institute for Date Foundations of the Technical University of Hamburg, the Institute of Experimental Physics at Universität Hamburg as well as external project partners. The aim is to investigate the photoemission process in the high-field environment of the electron gun as well as the space-charge dominated beam dynamics in the injector using highly efficient data-driven models. You will perform start-to-end numerical modeling and simulation of the FEL, develop advanced concepts for data-driven modeling of the photoinjector, and optimize and evaluate your modeling using existing data and performing measurements at the photoinjector at the PITZ facility of the Zeuthen campus at DESY. In addition, you will take responsibility in coordinating, performing, and analyzing relevant scientific programs and join the facility operation at both Hamburg and Zeuthen campuses at DESY.

The position comprises scientific collaboration in the externally funded project “NFDIxCS” (National Research Data Infrastructure for and with Computer Science). This includes working on research questions in the development, analysis, implementation and operation of complex, secure IT systems. As a research-intensive working area, our research results are directly incorporated into teaching. In addition, the post holder continuously contributes to the publication and presentation of research and project results.

The goal of the Rymax-Quantum-Computer-Demonstrator project is to realize a hybrid quantum computer based on Rydberg atoms in optical traps. This project at the forefront of research is funded by BMBF and is performed in close cooperation with Universität Kaiserslautern, Fraunhofer ITWM as well as high-tech companies and companies from the logistics sector. The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to realize a next generation quantum computer able to tackle real world problems, e.g. in logistics, working in a highly coordinated team of outstanding scientists from both research and industry with access world class infrastructure.

The successful candidate will join a growing and dynamic working group focused on the future carbon balance of permafrost ecosystems in the northern high latitudes. In collaboration with the group and project partners, the research associate will advance methane-relevant soil processes in global models. Such advanced models will enable a more valid simulation of the future carbon cycle and climate, as well as investigation of methane-related feedback mechanisms at high latitudes. This position is embedded into a new project about Arctic methane processes by seven German institutions with many opportunities for scientific exchange. In addition, our group is active in the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability and the DFG excellence cluster CLICCS.

The research focus of the vacant position is in the field of modern German literary studies or comparative literature with a focus on German studies. The applicant is expected to conduct a research project that explores aesthetic, poetological, scientific, or popular notions of force or energy in literature. Responsibilities include the support and assistance of the research activities of the Centre of Advanced Studies through events and publications that are thematically relevant.

The main research focus of the Signal Processing (SP) research group is on developing novel machine learning methods for speech signal processing. Applications include speech communication devices such as teleconferencing, assistive listening devices and voice-controlled assistants. In this project statistical signal processing methods will be combined with deep learning techniques to develop novel machine learning approaches to enhance noisy speech captured by multiple microphones. Typical tasks of a research associate include writing scientific publications, and traveling to conferences and workshops to present the work. We are interested in a highly motivated person who is interested in working with us on cutting edge research in a pleasant working atmosphere.

A particular focus of the position advertised here is the investigation of conversion pathways for selected model substrates in various alcohol/water mixtures to clarify the reaction mechanisms taking place both under oxygen and nitrogen atmosphere. Besides the catalyst-solvent interactions, also the substrate-solvent interactions will be investigated. The clarification of the mechanism and a detailed interpretation of the species formation depending on nature and amount of alcohol as co-solvent in aqueous solution will be achieved by suitable analytical methods (e.g. NMR, GC-MS, HPLC).

The candidate’s project will be a part of a larger Freigeist Fellowship Project “Seeing excitons in motion” intended to invent methods to follow motion of excitons in photovoltaic materials by means of ultrashort light pulses. The primary task of this position will be the theoretical description of ultrafast photoelectron momentum microscopy following excited-state dynamics in materials. This task will require analytical analysis, electronic structure calculations and coding. In addition, the candidate is expected to help doctoral students, master or bachelor students with their projects, when necessary. The group works interdisciplinary and focuses on three types of systems: solid-state materials, molecules and hybrid systems.

Services and project preparations in the field of history and culture of the Middle East in the pre-modern period, in co-operation with the RomanIslam Center for Comparative Empire and Transcultural Studies. Assistance in various publication projects among them historical topography of the Iberian Peninsula, and North Africa (RomanIslam Center). The position also serves for the preparation of scientific research in this field, creation of data collections, source analysis. The professorship of Islamic Studies is primarily concerned with the political and economic history of the Near East from 600 to 1500, from the Iberian Peninsula to Central Asia, as well as comparative empire studies. Further research areas are material culture, epigraphy and numismatics.
