Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: MRC Postdoctoral Fellow
The University of Cambridge wishes to appoint a postdoctoral scientist to join Dr Michal Minczuk’s research group in the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit in Cambridge. The postholder will work within a programme focussed on mitochondrial genome editing model and cure mitochondrial diseases. Mammalian mitochondria contain several copies of their own genome (mtDNA) which encodes 13 essential subunits of the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) system. Pathogenic variants in the mitochondrial genome can result in mitochondrial diseases, which are a major group of inherited conditions affecting ~1 in 8,000 humans. These disorders are currently incurable and effectively untreatable, with heterogeneous penetrance, presentation and prognosis. This project aims at addressing the lack of effective treatment for these disorders.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: MRC Postdoctoral Fellow
The postholder will work within a programme focussed on understanding mitochondrial dynamics and membrane contact sites as key regulators of cell fate decisions. Mitochondria form a dynamic and connected network, which is constantly remodelled by cycles of membrane fission and fusion. These dynamic transitions are not only required to ensure a proper mitochondrial function but also to respond to cellular needs and adapt to the metabolic state of the cell. To execute cellular functions, mitochondria also establish membrane contact sites with other organelles, including the endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes, trans-Golgi network vesicles and lysosomes. These organelle membrane contact sites are hotspots for metabolites flux and tightly regulate mitochondrial architecture. While defects in mitochondrial morphology or contact sites have been associated with human diseases, the molecular mechanisms linking mitochondrial membrane remodelling to cell fate decisions are not fully understood.

The tropics harbour more species than anywhere else on Earth. This biodiversity supports a number of ecosystem services¿benefits that humankind derives from the natural environment¿that are essential for human well-being and socioeconomic opportunities. Of particular importance is timber and associated wood products. Yet the overexploitation of timber via selective logging in tropical forests and the emerging risk of severe wildfire under climate change threaten the long-term sustainable flow of this vital resource, the survival of harvested species, and the hyperdiversity of unexploited flora and fauna within logged forests.

Applications are invited to recruit an enthusiastic post-doctoral scientist to work on a project in the group of Prof Ravi Gupta. We employ an integrated approach, using biochemistry, cell biology, and use of viruses as tools to probe cellular pathways involved in macrophage cell cycle regulation. We are a virology lab and therefore also interested in persistence of viruses in cells such as macrophages. Macrophages are key players in innate and adaptive immunity as well as tissue homeostasis. We discovered that these terminally differentiated cells can transition between cell cycle states without cell division. This is dependent on the canonical proliferation cascade involving MEK/ERK and leads to deactivation of the retroviral restriction factor SAMHD1. We have exciting new data to show that certain physiological triggers such as cell contact can drive this cell cycle progression.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position working on a Leverhulme-funded project about the histories and geographies of climate change and providing related research support to Professor Mike Hulme. The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Geography and will join Hulme’s research group (https://www.mikehulme.org). The Leverhulme Research Grant – ‘Making Climate History’ (MCH) – was awarded jointly to Dr Staley and Professors Schaffer (History and Philosophy of Science; HPS) and Hulme (Geography). Its guiding principle is that the conceptual and technical work required to create effective knowledge of changing climates is strongly connected to the material technologies and practices that produce and change physical climate regimes. The successful applicant will pursue two main objectives: 1) through archival work, and in association with the project team, to source and critically analyse documents and papers pertaining to the historical development of climate sciences from the late eighteenth to the late twentieth centuries; and 2) to conduct oral history interviews with retired climate scientists around the world, and to curate (using the University Library portal) and interpret/synthesise interviews already completed by the MCH team with a view to a range of publications. They will also be expected to undertake a small number of undergraduate supervisions and limited teaching (seminars and project supervision) on the MPhil in Anthropocene Studies.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Assistant/Associate in Ultrafast Three-Dimensional Microscopy
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in Ultrafast Three-Dimensional Microscopy in the group of Prof. Akshay Rao at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge (http://www.rao.oe.phy.cam.ac.uk/). The group has a broad research program and explores problems at the frontier of organic and hybrid semiconductors, 2D and quantum materials. A key tool for these studies has been the development of ultrafast transient optical microscopy (TAM), which now allows us to track the transport of photoexcitations in three-dimensions with sub-10fs temporal resolution and sub-5nm spatial precision. This has opened a new frontier for the study of the spatiotemporal dynamics of photoexcitations on time and length scales dominated by quantum effects rather semi-classical behaviour [1-6].

About The University of Cambridge, United Kingdom – Official Website
The University of Cambridge is a collegiate research university in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Founded in 1209 and granted a royal charter by Henry III in 1231, Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s fourth-oldest surviving university. The university grew out of an association of scholars who left the University of Oxford after a dispute with the townspeople. The two English ancient universities share many common features and are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge.
Cambridge is formed from a variety of institutions which include 31 semi-autonomous constituent colleges and over 150 academic departments, faculties and other institutions organised into six schools. All the colleges are self-governing institutions within the university, each controlling its own membership and with its own internal structure and activities. All students are members of a college. Cambridge does not have a main campus, and its colleges and central facilities are scattered throughout the city. Undergraduate teaching at Cambridge is organised around weekly small-group supervisions in the colleges – a feature unique to the Oxbridge system. These are complemented by classes, lectures, seminars, laboratory work and occasionally further supervisions provided by the central university faculties and departments. Postgraduate teaching is provided predominantly centrally.
Cambridge University Press, a department of the university, is the oldest university press in the world and currently the second largest university press in the world. Cambridge Assessment, also a department of the university, is one of the world’s leading examining bodies and provides assessment to over eight million learners globally every year. The university also operates eight cultural and scientific museums, including the Fitzwilliam Museum, as well as a botanic garden. Cambridge’s libraries, of which there are 116, hold a total of around 16 million books, around nine million of which are in Cambridge University Library, a legal deposit library. The university is home to, but independent of, the Cambridge Union – the world’s oldest debating society. The university is closely linked to the development of the high-tech business cluster known as ‘Silicon Fen’. It is the central member of Cambridge University Health Partners, an academic health science centre based around the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
