(15) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in process design, modelling, and simulation of Power-to-X (P2X) plants – DTU Energy

The recent targets for decarbonization in crucial energy sectors, as well as the growing availability of renewable electricity, have sparked interest in the reutilization of carbon dioxide in Power-to-X (P2X) plants for synthetic fuel production. The development of these novel chemical plants will create a new sustainable chain of processes based on the life cycle of carbon: use, capture, and return to fuel. This envisioned green future requires the design and integration of several technologies, from carbon capture to electrolysis and fuel synthesis. Although the production of bulk chemicals and synthetic fuels has been explored for decades, the recent context of using fluctuating renewable energy sources (i.e., electricity and/or biomass) and captured carbon dioxide creates complex design problems for industry. Thus, innovative solutions for carbon conversion into key chemical substances need to be proposed, evaluated, and optimized. In this context, thermodynamic modeling plays a major role in predicting process efficiencies, estimating equipment sizes, and analyzing avoidable losses for design improvements.

(16) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in portfolio optimization for risk management – DTU Energy

The renewable energy sector is subjected to several political-economic factors (e.g., regulation, taxes, energy prices, etc.) that create an uncertain scenario for the development of new technology solutions. Decision makers in industry have the difficult task of identifying disruptive solutions that maximize profits and environment benefits with minimal economic risk. Furthermore, design choices and operating strategies may also influence costs and profits associated with new sustainable businesses, such as Power-to-X plants and biorefineries. Thus, the assessment and minimization of economic risks associated with sustainable technology solutions can provide more reliable investment portfolios for the green transition of industries. For instance, a competitive strategy to achieve decarbonization goals may be to diversify the technology portfolio of a process plant, enabling the production of multiple end-products. Therefore, research in mathematical optimization can help to provide novel techniques to answer these complex problems. In this work, you will be responsible for developing a systematic approach to assist in the design and optimization of process plants under uncertainty scenarios.

(18) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral research fellowship on spin-charge interconversion phenomena in oxide heterostructures – DTU Energy

At DTU Energy our research efforts are aiming at developing spintronic applications. Spintronics is a promising approach which goes beyond the operating principle in present-day electronics where the logic operation relies on the electron spin instead of its charge. Recently, heterostructures based on complex oxide systems have attracted a lot of interest in spintronics where the interconversion between electron spin and charge occurs through the spin-orbit coupling. Realising breakthroughs in such conversion phenomena will pave the way for a next generation of logic devices based on spin rather than charge. The position offered is part of a new national project supported by the VILLUM Foundation. The project is carried out in close collaboration between DTU Energy in Denmark and CNRS/Thales in France. The objective of this project is to investigate the coexistence of a large spin-orbit coupling and electron mobility in oxide heterostructures and devices for spintronic applications. We hope that you are interested in joining this exciting project at the crossroads between physics, materials science, and logic device applications!

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellowships – CO2 Conversion to Solids: Increase Sustainability by Transforming Waste Building Materials to New, Valuable Products – DTU Physics

As a result of recently funded projects, our research group is looking to fill 8 positions. The goal is to develop fast, cheap, environmentally friendly ways to mineralise CO2, to convert it back to solid, where it will remain stable for millennia. Even with the very best alternative energy sources and conversion of CO2 into products, current air and ocean CO2 levels will need 1,000 to 10,000 years to return to preindustrial levels. To reduce climate change and ocean acidification, CO2 must be converted to solid and put back into the Earth, where it came from in the first place. At DTU Physics, we are running several projects in parallel, that range from very fundamental investigations of mineral-water-gas properties, through developing predictive models and new experimental methods and instrumentation, to applying research results and designing industrial CO2 trapping processes. The need is urgent, the task is challenging and a multidisciplinary approach is essential – so we are looking for highly motivated group members, including chemists, physicists, nanoscientists, mineralogists, geoscientists, engineers and others. We welcome group members at all levels, from young bachelor students to experienced scientists and engineers.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Characterization and metabolic modeling of methane fed microbiomes for co-metabolism of trace organic chemicals in groundwater – DTU Sustain

Intense agricultural and farming activities lead to pollution of the environment via run-off of nutrients and other organic pollutants (e.g., pesticides) to different water bodies. High nutrient levels can lead to eutrophication and may reach levels that prevent water use for drinking purposes. The project will address the removal of nutrients and pesticides from groundwater taking advantage of methane already present in many groundwater streams. The project relies on the use of bioinformatics to characterize the methane fed microbiomes and provide input data for metagenome based metabolic models. These models are then used to optimize bioreactors to treat groundwater. The postdoc will work with a team of interdisciplinary researchers as part of the project Metagenome-based Metabolic Modeling for Green transition of Water Treatment – application to Methanotrophy, granted by the Danish Research Council.
