(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellow in communications and coding for channels with memory

Fiber-optic channels usually have a long memory due to the physical properties of lightwave propagation in combination with signal processing algorithms in transmitters and receivers. The traditional approach to such channels is to make them virtually memoryless by interleaving, and then apply classical physical-layer techniques optimized for memoryless channels. In this project, we will instead omit the interleaver and design channel-aware physical layer algorithms. Specifically, innovative coding, decoding, and channel estimation techniques are expected. The performance will be evaluated in terms of packet error rate theoretically and in simulations (no experiments), when applied to simplified optical channel models with memory. At the Department of Electrical Engineering, we conduct internationally renowned research spanning many fields and including information and communication theory, machine learning, and signal processing. We offer a dynamic, supportive, international research environment with about 150 employees from more than 20 countries and an extensive national and international collaboration network that encompasses both other academic partners and industry. Our working language is English. You will belong to a strong team of researchers in optical communications, organized in the research center FORCE. This center brings together researchers in communications, photonics, and electronics to solve hard problems in optical communications through a cross-disciplinary approach. The collaboration bridges traditional discipline boundaries and includes the whole chain from components to networks, from analysis to experiments.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral positions in Quantum Nanophotonics

The positions are in the brand-new Quantum Photonics Laboratory (QPL). We are scientists, applied physicists, and engineers. We explore the flow of and interactions between light, sound, and microwaves. Today’s demand for computing and connectivity is on a steep trajectory. There is no reliable path to a sustainable growth in our capabilities to compute and connect. A key issue is the excessive energy loss caused by communication. In classical datacenters and computers, this energy loss leads to heating and greenhouse gas emissions. In emerging quantum processors, the energy loss prevents scaling up small quantum devices into more powerful distributed systems. We believe using light for communication is our only hope for solving this. To do so, we must convert microwave signals onto light. We are developing new hardware to this end. Read more on our webpage and in this popular science article. This project is part of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), a 12-year, billion-SEK initiative with the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology, and to build a Swedish quantum computer. We are members of the Quantum Technology division in the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2). We work with the experimentalists in the Photonics division and the theorists at the Applied Quantum Physics division. Our department hosts the state-of-the-art MC2 Nanofabrication Laboratory cleanroom, the largest such facility in Northern Europe. We have cutting-edge cryogenic, microwave and optical measurement capabilities.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in wind power with voltage and frequency support

The division of Dynamics at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences is seeking a new postdoctoral researcher in the area of wind turbine dynamics. The target of the research is to investigate how ancillary services (such as frequency and voltage control) should be considered in the turbine control system in order to find trade-off between power production, providing ancillary services, and turbine fatigue life. This trade-off shall be analyzed considering external and internal factors, such as turbine structural and electrical properties, wind conditions, grid requirements etc. The research will be carried out using wind turbine system simulation tools and own coding of control algorithm. Furthermore, the developed algorithm shall be demonstrated in operation using Chalmers research wind turbine (16 m diameter, 30 m hub height, 45kW rated power). The position is funded by a grant from the Swedish Energy Agency entitled “Wind power with voltage-, and frequency support as well as island mode: In-operation demonstration of novel methods”. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in Quantum experiments with levitated microparticles

The goal of the postdoc project is to bring the center-of-mass motion of levitated microparticles into the quantum regime. These particles can weigh between a nanogram and a microgram. The project will be based on the experimental platform of chip-based magnetic levitation of superconducting microparticles. (17) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc in Formal Analysis of Autonomous Systems

Our group is looking for candidates interested in conducting independent research in the area of formal analysis of learning-enabled autonomous systems. Autonomous Systems (AS) have great potential to improve our ways of life, increasing mobility, cutting costs, and saving lives. Considering the complexity of the environments these systems operate in, AS increasingly rely on artificial intelligence (AI) to perform a variety of challenging decision-making tasks. Machine learning (ML) has been the driving force in addressing many of the challenges, especially in complex tasks such as perception, planning, and control. The use of ML in autonomous systems is projected to grow but with it also the concern of using ML models in safety-critical applications. While indispensable for autonomy, ML models can be brittle; unanticipated changes in the environment may cause a neural network to produce faulty outcomes that could endanger the safety of the system. This raises the question of how we need to adapt the development process to build safe and reliable learning-enabled AS.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc positions in the Chalmers Molecular Spectral Design Initiative

This project aims to facilitate the computational study of optical effects arising in modified base pairs and photoswitches when they are incorporated into an RNA/DNA environment. The challenge we face is that the general analysis of electronic structure today is (typically) reliant on Kohn-Sham (KS) Density Functional Theory (DFT). This methodology is the veritable engine of computational material science, chemistry, and physics because it provides an attractive balance between accuracy and cost. However, KS-DFT suffers from several well-known drawbacks. Foremost among these limitations is the tenuous connection between the energies of KS-DFT eigenstates (the orbitals) and physical reality as revealed, for example, in optical excitations. Crucial leadups to this project is development of a formally exact and orbital-free DFT expression for the average energy of electrons, and beyond state-of-the-art DFT methodology exceptionally well suited to describe base-pair interactions. In the Chalmers Molecular Spectral Design Initiative, you will help to combine these advances, with for example, Koopman-compliant, generalized Kohn-Sham or time-dependent DFT methodologies and for chemical bonding analysis. As a postdoctoral researcher in this project (two will be hired), you will work on theory and modeling. However, analysis and design efforts will leverage extensive experimental spectroscopic data and insight from derivatives of RNA/DNA nucleobase analogs and DNA-bound molecular photoswitches.

(20) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in secure localization and sensing for 6G

As mobile communication systems tend to have higher frequencies, they start to behave like radar. This will bring the ability for 6G systems to localize and track people and objects with a high degree of accuracy. Within this research project, you will work on a framework for security and privacy for localization and sensing. This position is part of several ongoing projects on 5G and Beyond 5G localization in which you will gain not only theoretical knowledge but also industry contacts. You can check out our recent publications in this field. You will be part of the Communication Systems Group at the Department of Electrical Engineering, which is known for its contributions to wireless and optical communication systems. The group has about 50 members from all over the world. The working language at Chalmers is English.
