(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher: Probabilistic Graphical Models at the Donders Centre for Cognition
The Personalised Care in Oncology (PersOn) consortium is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Probabilistic Graphical Models (PGM) to work on explainability and justification in Bayesian networks. Together with other postdoctoral researchers and PhD candidates from various backgrounds, you will lay the foundations for the next generation of clinical decision support systems for treatment and follow-up in oncology. You will work closely together with other PGM experts, as well as with researchers, healthcare practitioners, and stakeholders in explainable decision support. Your work will involve foundational research, advancing the state of the art in Bayesian networks, as well as applied research, focusing on user requirements in terms of explanation and justification to help advance shared decision making about personalised healthcare. You will be embedded in the Foundations of Natural and Stochastic Computing group within the AI department, where fundamental and applied research on Bayesian networks is one of the core research lines. You will be expected to help define the group’s research focus and positioning within the Donders Centre for Cognition (DCC) and in the international PGM community, and to help maintain a safe and inspiring research environment for our team members. If so desired, you will be given the opportunity to develop your teaching skills, helping you further qualify for a career as independent academic researcher.
Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Automata, Algorithms and Applications
The project aims to advance fundamental knowledge of finite automata. Your research will focus on two themes. The first theme is synchronisation, related to Cerny’s conjecture. Which word length is needed to synchronise an automaton when the input has (random) errors? The second theme is complexity of finite-state transducers. The goal here is to efficiently generate a given infinite morphic sequence. The project has applications to number theory and aperiodic tiling. You will contribute to the research of the department in collaboration with your colleagues. There is no teaching duties associated with this position. However, if you want to gain teaching experience, you can take on a small teaching task or even obtain a teaching qualification.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Junior Postdoctoral Researcher at the Donders Centre for Cognition
We are looking for a Junior Postdoctoral Researcher to work on a project funded by the Research Council of Norway (Prof. Vebjorn Ekroll) and hosted by Radboud University’s Donders Institute (Prof. Rob van Lier) called ‘The illusion of empty blind zones: How things may seem to appear out of nowhere in magic shows and road accidents’ (a.k.a. the BLINDZONES project). The research will be conducted at the Donders Institute. The project starts on 1/11/2023 and ends on 31/10/2025. The primary aim of the BLINDZONES project is to determine the mechanisms underlying a recently discovered perceptual illusion (i.e. the illusion of absence), which in addition to challenging basic assumptions in traditional vision science may also contribute to traffic accidents. The illusion consists of a compelling and immediate experience that the blind zone behind an object is empty. We aim to develop a basic scientific understanding of this anomalous phenomenon and to clarify its implications for basic vision theory. In particular, we aim to determine the heuristic principles employed by the underlying visual mechanisms and to identify potential neural correlates of these mechanisms. We also aim to determine the potential role of the illusion in traffic accidents. Based on this research, we aim to answer the question of what countermeasures are most effective for reducing the risk of accidents associated with blind zones. The project group is organised as a consortium of researchers from the University of Bergen (Norway), Radboud University (Netherlands), the University of Leuven (Belgium), and the University of Wrocław (Poland), and partners from the Norwegian Institute of Transport Economics.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher or PhD Position: Light-driven THz Switching of Antiferromagnets and Antiferromagnetic Magnonics
To do so, we are looking for a highly motivated colleague to study the interaction of femtosecond laser pulses with spins in antiferromagnetic materials. Although the project is very fundamental in nature, it has the ambition to provide the very first and, probably, the only possible solution for low-dissipative writing and processing of magnetic bits at THz rates.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher: Sustainability Assessment of Pharmaceuticals
You will integrate these methodological innovations into a comprehensive methodology for sustainability assessment of pharmaceuticals and work on the elaboration of specific case studies on the sustainability assessment of pharmaceuticals in order to demonstrate that the comprehensive methodology can be operationalised in practice, for example in procurement, market approval and production planning. You will carry out the above-mentioned tasks in close collaboration with two PhD candidates and several other TransPharm project partners. You will be expected to closely collaborate with the PhD candidates and to support the senior researcher in coordinating the TransPharm research activities. As a member of the Environmental Science cluster, you will also be expected to participate in regular educational activities.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Anthropology and Development Studies
Are you interested in the relationship between diversity and inequality? And do you hold a PhD in Anthropology, Development Studies or a related discipline? Then join us as an assistant professor. In this position, you will conduct qualitative and mixed methods research and teach courses on issues related to diversity and inequality. You will particularly conduct qualitative and/or mixed-methods and multidisciplinary research on issues related to our central research programme on diversity and inequality. More specifically, you will contribute to one of two subthemes:
