PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher for Experiments in Swimming and Swarming Dynamics of Living Organisms

You will perform fundamental research in the field of soft and living matter physics, as well as fluid dynamics. You will perform technically challenging swimming force experiments with tiny living organisms using a micropipette force sensor (Backholm et al., Nature Protocols 2019 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41596-018-0110-x). Your first project will be to investigate the effect of nearby swimmers on the swimming dynamics of brine shrimps. In parallel with your experimental work, you will develop theoretical models in collaboration with our international collaborators. You will be expected to take charge of your own research project, conduct your work with high scientific quality, and actively communicate your problems, mistakes, and scientific findings to the rest of the team. We help each other to succeed in making exciting new scientific discoveries.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Topological Photonics

We are seeking for a PhD student to work on Topological photonics starting September 1st, 2023. The position offers an exciting opportunity to conduct cutting-edge theoretical research and contribute to future development of innovative technologies in photonics. Topology concerns the geometrical properties that are immune to deformations and has been applied to describe the existence of novel phase transitions not linked to a spontaneous symmetry breaking. Topological phenomena, exemplified by the integer quantum Hall effect, are characterized by a correspondence between the existence of chiral edge states and the properties of bulk bands, such as the Berry curvature or topological invariants. The exploration of topological phenomena has extended to various physical systems, with optics and metamaterials being prominent among them. These investigations yield practical applications ranging from the unidirectional propagation of light to the development of integrated all-optical devices resistant to external perturbations. However, topological light at the nanoscale is not yet fully understood and controlled because of subtle reciprocity, nonlocality, and radiation to the far-field continuum. Addressing this issue, the project aims to provide a theoretical framework for understanding out-of-equilibrium topological phases in nanophotonic systems.

About Aalto University, Finland –Official Website

Aalto University  is a university located in Espoo, Finland. It was established in 2010 as a merger of three major Finnish universities: the Helsinki University of Technology (established 1849), the Helsinki School of Economics (established 1904), and the University of Art and Design Helsinki (established 1871). The close collaboration between the scientific, business and arts communities is intended to foster multi-disciplinary education and research. The Finnish government, in 2010, set out to create a university that fosters innovation, merging the three institutions into one.

The university is composed of six schools with close to 17,500 students and 4,000 staff members, making it Finland’s second largest university. The main campus of Aalto University is located in Otaniemi, Espoo. Aalto University Executive Education operates in the district of Töölö, Helsinki. In addition to the Greater Helsinki area, the university also operates its Bachelor’s Programme in International Business in Mikkeli and the Metsähovi Radio Observatory in Kirkkonummi.

Aalto University’s operations showcase Finland’s experiment in higher education. The Aalto Design Factory, Aalto Ventures Program and Aalto Entrepreneurship Society (Aaltoes), among others, drive the university’s mission for a radical shift towards multidisciplinary learning and have contributed substantially to the emergence of Helsinki as a hotbed for startups.Aaltoes is Europe’s largest and most active student run entrepreneurship community that has founded major concepts such as the Startup Sauna accelerator program and the Slush startup event.

The university is named in honour of Alvar Aalto, a prominent Finnish architect, designer and alumnus of the former Helsinki University of Technology, who was also instrumental in designing a large part of the university’s main campus in Otaniemi.
