Within the European COCOLIH2T project, funded by the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, we are collaborating with nine other partners to develop a conformal liquid hydrogen tank for aviation. Composite liquid hydrogen storage tanks are challenging to inspect because of their material properties, structural geometry, the presence of vacuum and insulation layers and in-service their low temperature and limited access. In this project you will assess the challenge of inspecting the prototype tank being developed by the COCOLIH2T consortium, using a combination of ultrasonic inspection, automation technologies and knowledge of critical failure locations of the tank. The research comprises a combination of building a prototype sensor head and signal processing of recorded signals to determine the structural integrity of the tank. In addition to conducting the research, you will be required to communicate it both in academic settings (journal papers and conferences) and towards an industrial audience. You will also be expected to contribute to the management of the project.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Synthetic cell division
Living cells are highly complex systems made of countless lifeless molecular components. We do not understand how these interact to form a living cell that sustains itself, grows and divides. The BaSyC initiative is a collaborative 10-year research program that aims to understand ‘how life works’ by building an autonomous self-reproducing synthetic cell from the bottom up. As a container, we use giant unilamellar vesicles, which are cell-sized, lipid bilayer-enclosed reaction compartments that can be visualized by real-time microscopy and directly manipulated using biophysical tools. The Koenderink and Dekker labs study the process of cell division, which requires constriction of the cell into a dumbbell-shape, followed by neck abscission to split the cell into two daughter cells. Since the mechanism of abscission is still poorly understood, it remains a big challenge in the synthetic cell field to achieve robust cell division.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc: Optical Nanoscopy at Cryogenic Temperatures
Optical nanoscopy is a super-resolution microscopy technique to study subcellular structures and function via specifically targeted fluorescent labels in molecular biology. Localisation microscopy in particular offers a much better resolution (~10-50 nm) than conventional diffraction limited microscopy (~250 nm). This project aims at shifting the resolution obtainable in an optical light microscope even further towards 1 nm. The researcher will work in a team of experimentalists and theorists who share the common goal to imaging at the nanometer scale. She/he will work as an experimentalist designing and performing experiments with cryo fluorescent microscopy. In order to achieve very high spatial resolutions from single molecule emitters in 3D will be use a so-called 4pi setup with two opposing objectives. In addition the wavefront of the light must not be disturbed by optical aberrations. In reality such aberrations are always present, but only at our targeted high resolution at cryogenic temperatures, do they play a crucial role. Therefore the candidate will incorporate adaptive optics instrumentation and algorithms to measure the wavefront distortion and subsequently correct the distortions.

We are looking for a passionate candidate to join as a Postdoc the Veldhorst group, who are pioneers in quantum computing and simulation in germanium. The Veldhorst group demonstrated the first single-hole qubit, enabled two-qubit logic in germanium, and executed quantum algorithms on a four-qubit quantum processor. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will explore opportunities with semiconductor quantum technology and aim to push the boundaries in quantum control of semiconductor qubits. This position is part of the Horizon Europe funded D-STANDART project. In this project we aim to reduce the time and cost to characterise the fatigue and durability properties of large composite structures with arbitrary lay-ups. Together with the project partners we will develop novel experimental methodologies and combine these with multi-scale, AI-assisted modelling to predict the fatigue life of full-scale structures. Simply put, that’s exactly what you’ll be doing at TU Delft, a renowned pioneer in the field of quantum nanoscience. As a postdoc in Coherent Spin Dynamics, you will help us explore a key new frontier of science: tracing the coherent quantum dynamics of coupled spins on the atomic scale. Your exploratory work will contribute to the discovery of new materials that, in turn, could create disruptive new technologies that go way beyond quantum computing. Based in Delft, a major hub in quantum science, you will investigate how magnetic materials behave and how we can optimise them. Specifically, you will work on a dedicated research project related to coherent spin dynamics and ESR-STM (electron spin resonance scanning tunnelling microscopy), expanding on our latest results. STM allows for the study of magnetism on the smallest scale: the scale of individual atoms. In recent years, ESR-STM has dramatically expanded possibilities by enabling quantum coherent spin manipulation in such atoms. Building on this framework, our group has developed a unique methodology to trace the free-time evolution of coupled spins using a combination of ESR-STM and very fast DC pulses. This methodology forms the basis for future research, such as 2D spin lattices and atomic-scale quantum information devices. We are also expanding our activities in the area of hyperfine interactions (i.e. nuclear spin manipulation and readout) and non-contact atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Advanced driver assistance systems are key to enhancing road safety. One of the critical requirements for such systems is to reliably perceive the environment. The state-of-the-art sensors, however, are not ubiquitously deployed in driver assistance systems due to their high cost. On the other hand, simpler low-cost sensing solutions suffer from poor perception. In this project, you will address this gap by combining sensing capacities of the human driver and the driver assistance system, to develop sensing solutions that are both affordable and reliable. Your aim will be to develop signal processing algorithms and interfaces to incorporate driver in the sensing loop of automated driver assistance systems. Your work will leverage the unique cognitive abilities of humans controlling these systems to process complex signals and make informed real-time decisions. The project will lay the foundations for understanding how human interaction with signal processing systems impacts transparency and ethical considerations in deploying hybrid human-in-the-loop solutions. For the NWO-funded project on Adaptable Design Pathway Transitions (ADEPT), we are looking for a highly motivated postdoc researcher. This fully funded position is offered as a 0,8 or 1,0 FTE appointment. Infrastructure transitions are happening all around us. We can find them in circular design, application of digital technologies as well as in solar, wind and nature-inclusive energy solutions. In the Netherlands, the national infrastructure systems are managed and governed by various infrastructure agencies, each responsible for their own networks, i.e., railroads, motorways, airports, seaports, energy grids and waterways. These agencies are competent in decision-making regarding their own transitions. However, they are also affected by and care about the decisions made by other agencies. This sprawl of changes among the various agencies raises questions about their interwovenness and their implications for the users and stakeholders of infrastructure systems. What if different technologies, pursued by some agencies, are incompatible for the different systems and stakeholder needs? What if certain decisions are made based on policy ambitions and agreements turn out to go against the tide of broader societal shifts? ADEPT addresses these questions. In the short term, relevant communication lines are needed between the organizations about their decisions. In the long term, the ability of these agencies to redirect their aims in a continually changing policy landscape needs to be developed. For example, their own ambitions and goals are likely to change and should not lead to ineffective policy mixes and irreversible dead-end paths as time progresses. ADEPT proposes that a systems-of-systems approach helps to place and pace an individual agency’s ambitions into a more systemic orientation: How does the Netherlands need to govern infrastructure transitions for the long term in a constantly changing environment?

This poses new challenges both to philosophical work on values and to (responsible) technological development. What (ethical) requirements should these systems adhere to? What does such ‘adherence’ mean and how can we demonstrate and validate claims regarding adherence? How to build AI systems that can be understood by humans and that can align their behaviour with human values? Tackling these challenges requires bridging the gap between philosophy and computer science within AI Ethics.

Delft University of Technology, also known as TU Delft, is the oldest and largest Dutch public technical university. The university was established on 8 January 1842 by William II of the Netherlands as a Royal Academy, with the primary purpose of training civil servants for work in the Dutch East Indies. The school expanded its research and education curriculum over time, becoming a polytechnic school in 1864 and an institute of technology (making it a full-fledged university) in 1905. It changed its name to Delft University of Technology in 1986.
Dutch Nobel laureates Jacobus Henricus van ‘t Hoff, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, and Simon van der Meer have been associated with TU Delft. TU Delft is a member of several university federations, including the IDEA League, CESAER, UNITECH International and 4TU.
