The postdoc will contribute substantively to groundbreaking analyses, leading and co-authoring high impact manuscripts. The postdoc will have opportunities to participate in the intellectual life of the department and university, for example by attending seminars, giving guest lectures, and co-mentoring MPH students. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in demography, economics, epidemiology, biostatistics or relevant fields at the starting date. Excellent skills in quantitative research and writing are required, as well as demonstrated interest in and understanding of health over the lifecourse, chronic disease, and population health.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doctoral Fellow – Electrophysiology, Basal ganglia, Striatum
Applicants are sought to fill a post-doctoral position in the Emory National Primate Research Center at Emory University. The selected candidate will work in NIH-sponsored research for studies of Parkinson’s disease pathophysiology. The focus of these studies is on striatal mechanisms of basal ganglia dysfunction underlying motor and cognitive deficits. Different manipulations are used in disease models to investigate cellular/circuit changes and explore therapeutic targets. Emory University offers a rich scientific environment with opportunities for multiple collegial interactions and collaborations to support and enhance post-doctoral studies. Candidates must hold a PhD, MD or equivalent degree, or being near graduation, and will be selected on the basis of strong background in electrophysiology and physiology data analyses including Matlab. In-vivo recordings applying optogenetics and pharmacological tools to analyze signaling mechanisms in animal models are a major part of studies. Additional qualifications include previous training in basal ganglia circuits and Parkinson’s disease research. Important technical skills include the preparation of animal models, implant surgeries, and brain injections of viral vectors.

The Hansen Lab studies the interactions between satellite cells and the vasculature. Satellite cells are skeletal muscle progenitor cells that are known to play an important role in muscle repair after injury and adaptation to exercise. However, our lab focuses on a previously underexplored role of satellite cells in vascular growth. We have found that satellite cells, when activated, produce a number of chemoattractant growth factors that drive the migration of vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells which are important in the growth and development of blood vessels. This area is of particular interest in the context of peripheral artery disease (PAD), where patients suffer from ischemic tissue damage but treatment options are still limited. The lab has shown that ischemia stimulates satellite cells and is exploring ways to harness their angiogenic properties in vivo or through therapeutically delivered cells. Current work in the lab is determining the effects of satellite cell growth factor production using in vitro assays as well as determining what factors are critical to these vascular effects. One major project explores the biology of satellite cells in response to exercise. We are utilizing a mouse model in which we can selectively ablate satellite cells. Additionally, we are exploring the changes in expression and heterogeneity of satellite cells after exercise in both our murine models and human patient biopsies using single cell sequencing. Our newest project is to optimize satellite cell delivery and further develop therapeutic strategies through new biomaterials.
