Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate: Harnessing the regenerative potential of the brain
We are looking for a highly motivated post-doctoral scientist to join the laboratory of Dr. Sumru Bayin at the Gurdon Institute, University of Cambridge. You will work in the Bayin Lab to explore the molecular mechanisms that regulate the regenerative potential of stem cells in the brain during development and in adulthood using various techniques including but not limited to single cell genomics, and in vivo and in vitro stem cell assays, organoid models and mouse genetics. The Bayin Lab is interested in identifying the molecular mechanisms that regulate self-renewal, differentiation and plasticity of neural stem/progenitor populations during development and homeostasis, in order to discover how to stimulate repair of the brain upon injury. The cerebellum, which is a folded hindbrain structure that is important for skilled motor movements and higher order cognitive functions, has emerged as a powerful system to study the regenerative responses in the brain. We have previously shown that the cerebellum can recover from the loss of at least two types of neurons via distinct regenerative mechanisms (Wojcinski, Nature Neuroscience, 2017; Bayin, eLife, 2018; Bayin, Science Advances, 2021, Bayin and Joyner, Development, 2022). However, the full repertoire of molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate neonatal cerebellar development and injury response remain to be studied.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate (Fixed Term)
Our recent studies identified an extra-organismal RBP in the honeybee jelly secretion, which is somewhat analogous to mammalian milk (Maori et al., Mol Cell, 2019; Maori et al., Cell Reports, 2019). Prompt by this observation, we explored the presence of such RBPs in breast milk. We isolated two secreted milk proteins with robust yet unknown RNA-binding capacity, playing essential metabolic roles. Both factors are conserved across mammals, active in the intestine, and interact with multiple receptors and components of the extracellular matrix. Therefore, our key goals are to define how and why these novel secreted RBPs bind RNA in human milk and the gastrointestinal tract. To achieve these goals, the successful candidate will employ cutting-edge protein and RNA biochemistry techniques, imaging and high-throughput sequencing to assess the impact of RNA binding on protein/RNA stability and function. They will also test whether these secreted RBPs are endocytosed in their ribonucleoprotein forms and deliver their maternal RNA partners into cells. Uncovering the biology of these novel extra-organismal RPBs would provide new knowledge about the bioactivity of breast milk and the healthy digestive process, and what could go wrong during disease. Hence, this research will ultimately contribute towards the development of transformative new research and technology avenues to sustain health and control disease.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Assistant/Associate in Lithography and Laser Processing (Fixed Term)
Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/Associate (Postdoctoral Researcher) in the Department of Engineering, to work on the development of a new lithography and laser processing techniques to integrate carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into microdevices. Applications of this process includes microsensors, microbatteries and microthrusters. The post holder will be located at the University of Cambridge in the group of Prof. Michael De Volder (www.nanomanufacturing.eng.cam.ac.uk/) and collaborate with project partners at UCL (Prof Buddha Deka Boruah https://profiles.ucl.ac.uk/87661) and Cambridge (Prof Adam Boies https://cambridgenanoaerosol.com/). CNTs are one of the most widely studied, and most attractive nanomaterials with off-the-chart mechanical and electrical properties. However, these off-the-chart properties only apply to high quality individual nanotubes whereas most commercial applications require tens to millions of carbon nanoparticles to be assembled into one device. Unfortunately, the mechanical and electronic figures of merit of CNTs typically drop by at least an order of magnitude in comparison to the constituent nanoparticles once integrated into a device. In this project, we will build on lithographic and laser processing as well as self-assembly techniques developed in the host group to control the morphology of CNTs at multiple lengthscales and improve the performance of CNT devices. This project requires knowledge of lithography and/or laser processing and/or CNT synthesis. In collaboration with our project partners, these structures will find applications in microsensors, microbatteries and thrusters.

About The University of Cambridge, United Kingdom – Official Website
The University of Cambridge is a collegiate research university in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Founded in 1209 and granted a royal charter by Henry III in 1231, Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s fourth-oldest surviving university. The university grew out of an association of scholars who left the University of Oxford after a dispute with the townspeople. The two English ancient universities share many common features and are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge.
Cambridge is formed from a variety of institutions which include 31 semi-autonomous constituent colleges and over 150 academic departments, faculties and other institutions organised into six schools. All the colleges are self-governing institutions within the university, each controlling its own membership and with its own internal structure and activities. All students are members of a college. Cambridge does not have a main campus, and its colleges and central facilities are scattered throughout the city. Undergraduate teaching at Cambridge is organised around weekly small-group supervisions in the colleges – a feature unique to the Oxbridge system. These are complemented by classes, lectures, seminars, laboratory work and occasionally further supervisions provided by the central university faculties and departments. Postgraduate teaching is provided predominantly centrally.
Cambridge University Press, a department of the university, is the oldest university press in the world and currently the second largest university press in the world. Cambridge Assessment, also a department of the university, is one of the world’s leading examining bodies and provides assessment to over eight million learners globally every year. The university also operates eight cultural and scientific museums, including the Fitzwilliam Museum, as well as a botanic garden. Cambridge’s libraries, of which there are 116, hold a total of around 16 million books, around nine million of which are in Cambridge University Library, a legal deposit library. The university is home to, but independent of, the Cambridge Union – the world’s oldest debating society. The university is closely linked to the development of the high-tech business cluster known as ‘Silicon Fen’. It is the central member of Cambridge University Health Partners, an academic health science centre based around the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
