(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc / Ingenieur/in Bau oder Maschinenbau 80-100% (a)

Drehgestelle sind multifunktionale Komponenten in einem Schienenfahrzeug, die mehrere Aufgaben haben: Sie übertragen die vertikalen Lasten vom Wagenkasten auf den Radsatz, sorgen für Dämpfungs- und Federungseigenschaften, steuern die Radsatzausrichtung, kontrollieren das Lenkverhalten des Fahrzeugs usw. Je nach Fahrzeugtyp und -kategorie und unter Berücksichtigung der Anbauteile machen Drehgestelle einen Gewichtsanteil von 30%-40% des gesamten Schienenfahrzeugs aus. Durch Optimierung des Designs, Verbesserung der Fertigungsmethoden oder durch Änderung des Materials kann deshalb das Gewicht deutlich reduziert werden. Im Rahmen einer Machbarkeitsstudie des Projekts wurde bereits ein Konzept für ein hybrides Drehgestell aus GFK und Stahl entwickelt. Detaillierte Entwurfs- und Analyseschritte sowie die Durchführung von Experimenten sind die Hauptaufgaben in diesem Projekt, um die Funktionalität des Drehgestells zu gewährleisten. Die Drehgestellkonzepte werden anhand der Einhaltung der Vorschriften hinsichtlich der Fahreigenschaften, der strukturellen Leistung und insbesondere der Gesamtkosten bewertet.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc (80-100%) who will participate in the creation of a new digital ecosystem to democratize the exchange of knowledge on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (a)

The position will give you the opportunity to carry out research activities on the topics of GHG data management and uncertainty assessment. You will also have the chance to collaborate with many Swiss academic and implementation partners within the WISER project. Your work will be essential to provide simple, efficient and novel solutions to a community of stakeholders with interests in GHG assessment. More specifically, you will create a data repository (i.e. listing of data sources) for the WISER digital ecosystem, analyze existing GHG data in order to develop an ontology with other partners (e.g. ecoinvent, researchers in computer science), and propose options to define data uncertainty for the considered data sources. The position will also offer the possibility to help in the management of a sub-project to ensure its completion in due time.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc on data analysis of long-term atmospheric composition time series at Mount Kenya (a)

The Horizon Europe Project KADI (https://www.kadi-project.eu) provides knowledge and climate services for an African observation and Data research Infrastructure. KADI is run by a consortium of partners from Africa and Europe. The project goals are (i) to improve the knowledge base on climate change in Africa, (ii) to identify societal demands and expectations, and (iii) to design research capacities for climate change observations and paving the way for their implementation. Empa’s Laboratory for Air Pollution / Environmental Technology has long-lasting experience with air quality monitoring and data analysis in developing countries, including Africa. Building on this expertise, we contribute to KADI through the the analysis and interpretation of atmospheric composition time series. Therefore, we are looking for a highly motivated postdoc or scientist.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc or Scientist in the field of Non-equilibrium Plasma Chemical Processes (a)

The research includes, but is not limited to, in-depth studies of plasma physical and chemical processes to achieve high control over the plasma activation, dissociation and formation of intermediates as well as the selective formation of stable gaseous and solid products. The work comprises the set-up of a novel plasma reactor with suitable diagnostics, building on the extensive experience and leading know-how of the group. We are aiming for an improved fundamental understanding of non-equilibrium plasma processes, contributing to the important field of chemical transformation of carbon-containing matter.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc / engineer in structural or mechanical engineering 80-100 % (a)

Bogies are multifunctional components in a rail vehicle, with several responsibilities: Transferring the vertical loads from the car body to the wheelset, providing damping and suspension characteristics, controlling the wheelset alignment, controlling the steering behavior of the vehicle, etc., based on the vehicle type and category and considering the attached components, bogies compromise a weight portion of 30% to 40% of the whole rail vehicle. Such a high weight ratio makes the bogies an ideal target for weight reduction by optimizing the design, improving the manufacturing methods, or changing the material. A conceptual design of FRP/metal hybrid bogie has already been developed in the project’s feasibility study. Detailed design and analysis steps and performing experiments are the focused tasks in the current phase to ensure the functionality of the bogie. Further, bogie’s concepts will be assessed based on compliance with the regulations regarding running characteristics, structural performance, and especially overall costs.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc or Scientist in the area of solid supported synthesis of polyesters (a)

The position will associate to our Additives and Chemistry Group in the laboratory of Advanced fibers. The group is well established internationally in polymer additive chemistry. A more recent focus of the group is the development of sustainable polymers. To strengthen activities in this area, we investigate more sustainable polymer processing routes. The development of novel polyesters especially from bio-based monomers is increasingly important for society. Most polyesters are sensitive to humidity and heat and their processing is thus challenging. To mitigate these limitation, we seek to combine synthesis and processing in new ways. This position offers unique possibilities to synthesize polymers via ring opening polymerization of monomers from solid supports, that ultimately aims at polymer fiber formation in a one-step process.
