21 Postdoctoral Fellowship at ETH Zurich, Switzerland

Your responsibilities will include:

• Development of theoretical concepts for metrics, data standardization and tools leveraging digital technologies for circular construction, together with industry and research consortium partners in Switzerland
• Exploration of implementation possibilities for automated workflows and digital technologies in new and existing construction projects
• Coordination of research projects and supervision of students working in the fields of data structures for circular construction, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital inventory tools, DPPs, scanning technologies, machine learning, matchmaking algorithms
• Validation and testing of proposed and developed solutions in pilot projects
• Engagement and collaboration with stakeholders such as construction companies, standardization bodies, consultants, and other industry partners to promote the adoption of the developed data template and tools
• Active participation in research activities, including publishing scientific papers and presenting findings at conferences and workshops
• Supervision of Master, and/or Bachelor students

In this role, you will be at the forefront of addressing several fundamental questions including: How can we best simulate strongly correlated quantum systems and harness the power of both classical and quantum computing resources? How can we exploit or take inspiration from quantum physics to develop cutting-edge machine learning? Your work will encompass a diverse array of concepts at the intersection of artificial intelligence, condensed matter physics, and quantum computing. You will dive deep into the realms of theoretical and computational physics with a focus on the development of algorithms and large-scale numerical simulations. Your expertise will extend to various areas, including quantum Monte Carlo, machine learning, quantum computing, quantum machine learning, and tensor networks. These and other techniques will allow us to confront challenges within the domains of equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium properties of quantum many-body systems, quantum computing, and machine learning, where you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of our understanding and capabilities in these groundbreaking fields.

• You will be responsible for development of the sensor prototype, including design and engineering of the prototype based on the sensing technology developed in the Bezdek lab
• You will develop data processing software for the sensor system, with support from the SDSC
• You will be responsible for initial testing and field deployment of the sensor system, with support from the Grassland Sciences Group, as well as handling and modeling of field data
• You will participate in meetings, seminars and other activities related to the research

We are looking for 1-2 postdocs to join the Plant Ecology group at ETH Zürich (led by Janneke Hille Ris Lambers). You will develop project(s) in collaboration with Hille Ris Lambers and other Plant Ecology Group members or collaborators to explore questions related to ongoing research on the drivers of climate-change-induced range and community shifts in temperate forests and/or  Alpine wildflower meadows. The plant ecology research group at ETH Zürich consists of an international team of researchers (~ 8-15 postdocs, graduate students and masters students) that use a wide variety of observational, experimental, and quantitative approaches to address questions of interest in field sites in Switzerland (Calanda Mountains, LWF forest sites) and the USA (Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington State). We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our group. You will collaborate closely with the PhD students while establishing a new line of research in the group. You are further expected to contribute to the teaching and supervision activities of the group. The position is ideal for someone who wants to strengthen their CV with additional projects and gain leadership experience in preparation for a top faculty or industry position. In collaboration with  Prof. Mohr’s research group we focus on materials and process modeling based on physically motivated models as well as machine learning approaches. Our projects are carried out in close cooperation with industrial partners, so that in addition to theoretical investigations, the focus is also on the application of the research work. In this context, the development and implementation of models in the corresponding software, the planning and execution of appropriate experiments and the validation of the results form the main components of the studies.

Our groups are tightly embedded in the Swiss initiatives on personalized health promoted by the PHRT and SPHN networks. Our major task is to contribute an in-depth molecular analysis of samples from patients to support therapeutic decisions and the discovery of novel targets. These activities are carried under the umbrella of the Swiss Multi-Omics Center (SMOC), which also unites the expert on clinical genomics of the Health2030 Genome Centre in Geneva. A recently published study of the molecular basis of methylmalonic aciduria in infants provides a representative example of the studies we perform .With the great progress made in recent years in the digitization of clinical samples by mass spectrometry, the challenge shifted from data generation to data interpretation. More efforts are needed to translate data into information and insights that are actionable. To work on these challenges, we are seeking two candidates that will pioneer reusable workflows for the analysis, integration, and visualization of molecular data. You are expected to build on domain knowledge and create pipelines that simplify data interrogation by non-experts or clinicians. As a member of our team, you will be working in a highly collaborative environment and be involved in national and international networks for precision medicine. You will be expected to work side-by-side with wet-bench scientists and assist in delivering data analyses that fill the gap between data and information and support clinical decisions with deep molecular evidence.

As a Post-Doctoral Researcher in this Module, you will manage and conduct clinical trials, coordinate resources and generally supervise research staff. In addition, you will be responsible to support the overall coordination of Module 3. This work will be performed in collaboration with our research partners at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), industrial partners at ARTICARES, and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) in Singapore.

The primary tasks for the position will focus on merging surface chemistry and engineering with state-of-the-art quantum cavity optomechanics and ultrasensitive force microscopy to improve the quality factors and chemical versatility of nanomechanical SiN resonators. You will explore various SiN surface modifications that maximize instrument performance by manipulating mechanical energy dissipation, eliminating surface defects, and controlling electronic contributions from self-assembled molecular films. Similar surface functionalization strategies can be used in order to mitigate surface noise sources of decoherence in other quantum device architectures, e.g., diamond materials hosting near-surface nitrogen– vacancy (NV) centers, which is another core research area in our group. Thus, secondary tasks for the position will include applying surface termination and chemical modification to diamond materials and having the opportunity in parallel to support and to participate in PhD projects geared toward quantum sensing with NV centers. These areas include the development of improved surface engineering techniques that simultaneously stabilize shallow NV centers while enabling chemical functionalization for surface nuclear and electronic spin sensing of molecular adsorbates.
