We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow (Research Fellow) to join the collaborative efforts of Asst. Prof. Jennifer Young’s Soft Nano-Biomaterials group and Assoc. Our goal is to characterize and replicate the nanoscale extracellular matrix (ECM) properties of healthy and diseased tissues to enhance our understanding of cellular behavior and clinical outcomes in metabolic diseases. Despite the critical role of the ECM in most diseases, its nanoscale properties remain poorly understood, posing a significant barrier to understanding ECM-directed cellular behavior for clinical applications.

 

This specific project focuses on matrix-mediated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) dysfunction in aging as part of the newly funded project “Mechanobiology in Development, Aging, and Disease.” The selected fellow will explore and elucidate the mechanobiology of cell-ECM interactions and intracellular mechanisms, particularly uncovering new aspects of ECM-ER crosstalk. The project will involve exploring ECM-ER-plasma membrane (ECM-ER-PM) interactions in aging using various tools available in both laboratories to image the ER in young and aged cells subjected to different ECMs. This will provide a platform to elucidate ECM-ER-PM signaling pathways using a high-throughput genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 knockout screen. The project aims to identify how ECM stiffness and composition affect ER function in aging and discover novel cell receptors and signaling pathways mediating ECM-ER interactions in organoids.

We are looking for a full-time postdoctoral Research Fellow (RF) to work in the Urban Climate Resilience module of the Future Resilient Systems programme, with a focus on Digital Twin-Enabled District Energy System Resilience. The appointment is for at most 11 months. The appointment is expected to start around January 2024.

This collaborative research concerns the development of a digital twin for district energy resilience and interactive decision support. As a first pilot study, a digital twin of district energy systems was created for the NUS campus to investigate how past events and possible future scenarios can affect the resilience of these systems. This digital twin comprises a data visualization platform and building energy demand models for scenario assessment. Electricity and cooling meter data were collected for several buildings on campus, as well as WiFi connection logs providing an estimate for the number of occupants in each building. Analyzing the data showed that buildings’ cooling systems are operated in a relatively centralized way, meaning that buildings consume energy for cooling whether they are occupied or not. To explore future scenarios for the case study area, these meter data were used to calibrate building energy demand models for a baseline year. Standards were used for other buildings to make appropriate assumptions for the needs for different building typologies. The platform allows to display these simulation results in a variety of ways, such as by typology, by energy use intensity, or by energy use per capita. Different forecast scenarios have been considered to investigate how different building system operation modes can support the transition to flexible work arrangements post-COVID. The scenarios show there is a significant potential for energy savings by operating buildings in a more occupant-driven way, where only occupied workspaces are actively conditioned.

The successful candidate will join a project that aims to develop innovative photocatalytic processes for the conversion of renewable feedstock, specifically woody biomass, into amino acids with bio-/chemo-induced chirality. The research fellow will design and optimize these processes, and additionally work on the design of a catalytic system for ammonia decomposition.

Conservation and restoration of carbon-rich Southeast Asian forests are of tremendous ecological and economical importance to ASEAN countries in the combat of climate change. Yet exact spatial distribution, health status and carbon stock of these forests remain poorly known. While a great many conventional satellite data sets have been used to estimate forest carbon stocks, most are not yet accurate enough to ensure the credibility and integrity of the marketplace for nature-based climate solutions. This 3-yr project funded by Singapore’s Academic Research Council, Ministry of Education (MOE) aims to improve the measurement forest structure and aboveground biomass by linking these remote sensing observations to ground measurements of representative ecosystems in Southeast Asia.

The National University of Singapore invites applications for the position of research fellow in the Centre for Sustainable Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The Centre for Sustainable Medicine is newly set up to drive research, education and advocacy for transforming healthcare practices to be low-carbon and more environmentally sustainable. The Research Fellow (RF) will design studies and conduct research testing the efficacy of a newly-developed music-based Brain Computer Interface (BCI) for emotion regulation in listeners. She/he will work in a multi-disciplinary team to 1) conduct R&D of our automatic music generation systems for affective music generation, and 2) help test the efficacy of a music generation system paired with a BCI for emotion regulation in healthy as well as neurological and/or mental health patients. The RF will design and conduct experimental research and user studies, help coordinate research activities, and perform data analyses. The RF will need to be capable of working both independently and in a team, of developing innovative solutions, and of publishing research findings in high-impact conferences and journals. This position is part of an exciting large-scale (multi-research team) project that aims to create a holistic BCI solution for the restoration and enhancement of brain functions.

The Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT) is a research centre of excellence in Singapore. It brings together physicists, computer scientists and engineers to do basic research on quantum physics and to build devices based on quantum phenomena. Experts in this new discipline of quantum technologies are applying their discoveries in computing, communications, and sensing.

We are looking for a full-time Research Associate to work in the Urban Climate Resilience module of the Future Resilient Systems programme, with a focus on Digital Twin-Enabled District Energy System Resilience. The appointment is for at most 12 months. The appointment is expected to start early 2024.

 

This collaborative research concerns the development of a digital twin for urban climate resilience, especially with respect to building operational GHG emissions, and interactive decision support. As a first pilot study, a digital twin of district energy systems was created for the NUS campus to investigate how past events and possible future scenarios can affect the resilience of these systems. This digital twin comprises a data visualization platform and building energy demand models for scenario assessment. Electricity and cooling meter data were collected for several buildings on campus, as well as WiFi connection logs providing an estimate for the number of occupants in each building. Analyzing the data showed that buildings’ cooling systems are operated in a relatively centralized way, meaning that buildings consume energy for cooling whether they are occupied or not. To explore future scenarios for the case study area, these meter data were used to calibrate building energy demand models for a baseline year. Standards were used for other buildings to make appropriate assumptions for the needs for different building typologies. The platform allows to display these simulation results in a variety of ways, such as by typology, by energy use intensity, or by energy use per capita. Different forecast scenarios have been considered to investigate how different building system operation modes can support the transition to flexible work arrangements post-COVID. The scenarios show there is a significant potential for energy savings by operating buildings in a more occupant-driven way, where only occupied workspaces are actively conditioned.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the National University of Singapore is actively seeking a Research Fellow to contribute to a groundbreaking research project. This research explores the wave attenuation capabilities of coastal vegetation under three-dimensional, combined wave-current flow conditions. The goal is to develop innovative, physically based models that quantify the protective benefits a vegetation meadow can offer to shorelines.

 

This research aligns with Singapore’s recently launched coastal research programme, which emphasizes the incorporation of nature-based solutions in coastal defense strategies.

 

The research fellow will work with Assistant Professor Gary Lei from Civil and Environmental Engineering at NUS. Ideally, we are interested in candidates with a track record of high-impact peer-reviewed journal publications related to the abovementioned topics and demonstrating prior experience with laboratory experiments and numerical modeling.

The Research Fellow will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) to design and build desirable microstructure to enhance mechanical properties of steels by additive manufacturing.

  The main focus is on the establishment of a numerical model for all-solid-state sodium ion batteries to support the design and optimization of such a battery system. 

•    The numerical model will need to be benchmarked with mechanical test results of prototypes and samples created during the course of the research and also reported works in open literature.

Quantum measurement lies at the crossroad between quantum foundations and quantum technologies. One the one hand, the measurement problem has irrigated all debates about the meaning and completeness of quantum theory – On the other, measurements are key processes in quantum technologies, as they bring results at the (macroscopic) level of the end user. The present project aims to analyze the resource cost of quantum measurement and how it relates to information extraction at the quantum and classical levels. We will optimize the resulting measurement energy efficiency, with special interest in possible advantages when quantum resources are exploited to perform the measurements [1], the fact that quantum measurement can behave as an energetic resource in quantum engines [2,3], and in the intimate relation between energy cost and reversibility. The post-doc will develop theoretical concepts and models, interact with a wide network of top level experimentalists, and supervise PhD students.
