Our research on the IP3R Ca2+ release channel and the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter seeks to understand the molecular determinants and physiological functions of endoplasmic reticulum-to-mitochondria Ca2+ transfer. Projects are available to investigate many aspects of channel biophysics, Ca2+ signaling, structural biology, and animal models.

The Cui lab uses transgenic animal models to study a blinding eye disease, glaucoma, with a goal of characterizing and developing novel therapies. This position will lead a NIH/NEI-funded project looking at how microglia/macrophage activation and extravasation into the retina and optic nerve affect retinal ganglion cell health in both rodent models of glaucoma and in human eyes.

The Center for Cytokine Storm Treatment & Laboratory (CSTL) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity to address cytokine storm disorders with major unmet medical need, such as COVID-19 and Castleman disease. Our discoveries in Castleman disease have set the stage for further successful treatments for devastating cytokine storm disorders. The CSTL combines ‘omic analyses of patient biospecimens, hypothesis-driven basic science research, and clinical data analyses to discover and pursue novel therapeutic approaches for cytokine storms through clinical trials and adoption in clinical practice. With a recently renewed R01, the CSTL is focused on applying these approaches to perform deep investigation of mechanisms of immune hyperactivation, JAK/STAT signaling, PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling, and chemokine signaling in hyperinflammatory conditions.

The University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher. This position is available as of October 23, 2023. Applications from current PhD students are welcome. Preference will be given to candidates with immediate availability.
This position is funded by the National Institutes of Health, grant number 1R01HL153735-04.
The goals of the 5-year (2020-2024) multicenter research study are to:
1) Ascertain determinants of operating room (OR) to intensive care unit (ICU) handoff protocol adoption and use in 12 adult and pediatric ICUs in five health systems,
2) Adapt OR to ICU handoff protocols using engineering approaches and select tailored implementation strategies,
3) Test the effectiveness of tailored, multifaceted, multilevel implementation strategies, and
4) Design and create a digital toolkit for other ICUs to identify implementation determinants, customize an OR-to-ICU handoff protocol, and select appropriate implementation strategies.
