Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Constant and Variable Amplitude Fatigue Resistance Similarity

This Postdoc position is meant to develop and validate a combination of advanced fatigue damage criteria and non-linear (loading & response and resistance induced) damage accumulation models applicable for fatigue design.

Since improving the fatigue design is quite effective in reducing the total cost of ownership, i.e. risk (uncertainty), your first aim is to revise and continue the development of the Total Stress and Effective Notch Stress fatigue strength criteria – adopting respectively an intact and cracked geometry – and corresponding constant amplitude fatigue resistance curves for welded joints in steel structures.

In order to provide fatigue strength and life time estimates in (random) variable amplitude loading & response conditions for design purposes, a non-linear damage accumulation model has to be developed. Particular attention is supposed to be paid to loading & response (e.g. mean stress sensitive sequence effects and time/frequency domain considerations) and resistance contributions. Artificial Intelligence techniques (e.g. Bayesian Inference) could be involved.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doc Position Urban Planning and Design of Manufacturing Functions in Cities, Case Studies Rotterdam and Athens

We are seeking a full-time post-doctoral candidate for a two-year position. Your post-doc research project will be an integral part of the recently awarded Horizon Europe Research In Action Project FABRIX (Fostering local, beautiful, and sustainably designed regenerative textile and clothing ecosystems). The urgency to maintain manufacturing functions in urban regions is growing after decades of planning ‘post-industrial’ cities. There are several reasons for this, including the need for diverse job opportunities in cities, the imperative to remanufacture products as locally as possible within a circular economy, and the drive to promote innovation from tacit to productional knowledge. The latter is increasingly influenced by geopolitical rationales. While these reasons gain (political) momentum, the process remains challenging.

The planning and design of cities must evolve to generate ideas, tools, and processes for facilitating (regenerative) manufacturing functions in urban regions without compromising the so-called ‘good planning practice,’ which aims to spatially balance functions, patterns, nature, etc. FABRIX will address this societal urgency by focusing on the textile and clothing sector. This sector provides valuable insights into social (in)justice, sustainability, innovation, production, consumption, geopolitics, and planning, linking to design and the arts; insights that are relevant for numerous other sectors. Initially, we will examine two case studies: Rotterdam (providing insights into the more innovation start-up-driven aspects of clothing and textile) and Athens (providing insights into the more production-oriented aspects of clothing and textile).

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Aerial Manipulation

With a decade-long research efforts in the field of aerial manipulation, it is evident how we are still far from achieving dynamic aerial physical interaction in the real world. This is due to the challenges related to dynamic forces and moments affecting the drone’s flight mechanics. So far, key contributions from the research community included the implementation of compliance in control laws to mitigate the effects of such unknown physical variables, constraining the operations to quasi-static conditions. Lately, novel designs have emerged that alleviate dynamic forces and moments in a mechanical, passive way – enabling more dynamic manoeuvres.

In this project, the researcher will leverage the use of novel compliant designs to broaden the interaction capabilities of drones outside the lab, in real world conditions. Novel control laws will be implemented on emerging compliant and multi-DoFs drone morphologies to tackle dynamic interaction with unknown objects and environments. Representative use-cases for such developments will be in space exploration and nature conservation.

(13) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Evaluating Anti-Segregation Policies in the Netherlands

Economic resources (typically wealth and income) are distributed very unevenly among people. In parallel, people with similar economic levels tend to concentrate spatially, in similar cities, in cities of similar sizes, and in similar neighbourhoods, in which case we call it urban segregation. Economic inequality and urban segregation are considered top priority challenges by the United Nations. Tackling them is urgent because economic inequality and urban segregation restrict the ability of the poorest individuals to get by in life, but they also affect life expectancy, social justice and cohesion for everyone.

One way to understand and address urban economic segregation is to model its dynamics, and to run and compare policy scenarios on how to reduce it. Following recent developments in analytical sociology and computational social sciences, it seems that two ways of modelling social processes such as urban economic segregation provide a strong basis for mechanistic and causal explanations: statistical modelling to describe covariations between social phenomena and individual characteristics, and generative modelling (such as agent-based modelling) to represent causal paths through which social phenomena (such as urban economic segregation) emerge from individual interactions.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Adaptive Power Control for Stable Multi Energy Systems

As the energy transformation is taking shape, multi-energy systems pose a serious threat to the stability of our power systems. The volatility of sustainable energy sources like solar and wind, and the unpredictability of user behaviour add to the conundrum. The constant changes in active power exchanges through HVDC and HVAC conversion, generation, and consumption lead to unacceptable voltage and frequency deviations from established limits for technical performance, ultimately causing power grid failures. As a blackout can be caused by changes in just a fraction of a second, revolutionary new, adaptive and fast control technology is crucial to promptly and effectively curb such deviations. As a postdoc at TU Delft you will conduct research into and develop self-learning automated control principles, incorporating a wide range of methods and technologies.

You’ll be working in a multidisciplinary team and with industrial partners, including leading power grid operators. Developing a comprehensive dynamic stability model using automation, multi-variable control methods and other relevant disciplines, you will first simulate and test your models in our state-of-the-art Electrical Sustainable Power Lab. And in close collaboration with your partners, you will translate your models into systems specifications and even experiment in their installations. In addition, you will be organising cocreation workshops and meetings and will report your progress and findings to the stakeholders. You will, of course, publish papers and disseminate your findings and knowledge in relevant communities.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Advanced Mechanical Separation and Beneficiation of Rare Earth Elements

Extracting Rare Earth Elements (REEs) containing particles from mining ores requires innovative and effective beneficiation technologies, capable of treating variable ores of different REE mineralogy to obtain >50-70% gangue removal, preventing gangue from entering the downstream processes, and therefore significantly reducing the cost of energy and reagents. Technologies applying magnetic liquids and innovative optical sorting techniques based on interactions of specially designed liquids, high-intensity magnets, and solid particles can effectively and selectively separate REE-bearing minerals from the gangue materials.

The Horizon Europe project SUPREEMO involves 11 partners with researchers from universities, research centers, and industries, working closely together to reach a common goal: to establish the first pre-commercial REE production value chain using European primary resources as feedstock, developing sustainable, cost-competitive processing, refining, and REEs for Permanent Magnet (PM) production technologies in a responsible way complying with local and international safety regulations. The largest end-user of REEs is the PM industry, which uses neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium as critical elements to produce high energy-efficient motors vital for electric mobility and renewable energy technologies. This is essential for EU industry and strategic sectors, which now depend 100% on imports.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Modeling bicycle behavior from visual stimulus to neuromuscular control ability

TU Delft is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a 1 year equivalent contract (full or part time). The researcher will develop and execute an engineering research project with the title “Modeling bicycle behavior from visual stimulus to neuromuscular control ability”. This project is funded by a TU Delft internal Cohesion grant and is a collaboration between the Intelligent Vehicles section and the Bicycle Laboratorium, both part of the Mechanical Engineering faculty. The purpose of the project is to use Computer Vision and bicycle dynamics models to accurately model cyclist behavior to improve bicycle and road designs, as well as safety in sustainable transportation.

Accurate motion data on cyclists is scarce. Existing data has been largely collected via counting at specific locations or GPS. However, the accuracy of GPS is limited and there is no data that can track bicyclists with centimeter accuracy in urban environments. We recently developed a bicycle equipped with the latest automotive-grade sensors. By using visual odometry from IMUs, lidar and cameras, we are able to drastically improve the localization performance over GPS. We are further developing a perception system to detect other traffic participants from the bicycle.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position on damping of critical electrical oscillatory phenomena

The power grid topology needs to adapt to absorb the rapid expansion of offshore wind, wind-to-hydrogen and the integration of offshore and onshore power generation. The volatile nature of sustainable energy production, the unpredictable demand, and random disturbances like component outages or short-circuits, result in poorly damped electrical oscillations, which could result in partial or total systemic blackouts. To design and confidently operate a stable power system for the future, a dynamic, data-driven approach to modelling is crucial. That’s your challenge as a postdoc at TU Delft.

You will conduct research into and develop a comprehensive, self-learning model, building a digital twin of the sustainable offshore power systems. Levering relevant monitoring and measuring data, your model will continuously adapt to reliably assess dynamic behaviour in micro to millisecond time scales . You will be focusing on anticipation, monitoring, and effective mitigation of diverse and unprecedented forms of poorly damped oscillations with different physical roots and time-varying properties affecting the systemic dynamic stability. In your research you will be working closely with grid operators and developers of sustainable offshore projects such as wind farms. As part of your role, you will coach and support PhD and master students, and publish and disseminate your findings and knowledge in relevant communities and at conferences.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Imaging with Synthetic Aperture Sonar on an Autonomous Surface Vessel

The Dutch government has funded the Geowin consortium to investigate and enable more reliable and cheaper offshore windfarm development. For this, it is mandatory to assess the location’s geotechnical feasibility. This is conventionally done with classical geotechnical approaches like cone penetration tests, borehole investigations as well as high resolution seismic surveys to structurally image the near subsurface. Ground modelling is a critical step in offshore windfarm development as it provides essential insights to the seabed properties, allowing engineers to design reliable and cost-effective foundations for the wind turbines. With more accurate data on the soil properties and seabed loadings, windfarm developers can optimize dimensions, foundation depth, wall thickness and overall monopile design of the windmills. This will allow saving steel and installation costs. Moreover, detailed geotechnical surveys scan for geohazards and also assure that there are no pipelines, cables or other infrastructure in the way, including unexploded ordnances (UXOs), or other objects on or within the seafloor where the windfarm should be developed. Using current invasive geotechnical equipment, this is a costly and environmentally aggressive endeavour, which requires large vessels, massive and expensive equipment, and a lot of time.
