A Research Scientist position is available at the Department of Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering (FABE) in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University (OSU). The Research Scientist will conduct research in the field of agricultural water management, drainage, irrigation, and sustainable agriculture systems. They will provide leadership in studying and modeling the impact of subsurface drainage and irrigation on hydrology, water quality, and crop production in Ohio and the Midwest Region. The successful candidate will primarily coordinate the ongoing research activity funded through a diverse extramural sources, and track and ensure the timely completion of project deliverables, progress reports, and final reports. The position is fully funded for the duration of 2 years after which the candidate will be expected to be more instrumental in bringing about 25 to 50% of the salary support through their own research scholarship. The candidate will supervise and/or mentor a group of staff, undergraduate and graduate students and help coordinate the onboarding process for new team members such as postdocs and other support staff. The Research Scientist will collaborate with agricultural consultants, Extension agents and other faculty members to generate progress updates and final reports of various projects; write peer reviewed journal articles; assist with training on experimental procedures, and publications; assist with proposal writing and the other administrative work. Given the Extension and International outreach mandate of the program, the candidate is expected to be involved with outreach activities.

The Post Doctoral Scholar will specialize in single-cell sequencing data analysis, working under the guidance of a scientific mentor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics. Duties include designing and developing innovative computational tools for single-cell multi-omics data analysis, investigating cell-type-specific regulatory mechanisms in complex tissues and diseases, revealing functional differences between patients and healthy individuals, creating web-based applications for comprehensive single-cell analysis, staying updated on biomedical data analysis technology and trends, collaborating with lab staff, researchers, and students, interpreting data and monitoring project progress, prioritizing research objectives, conducting literature searches, assisting with grant proposal writing and submission, preparing research manuscripts, articles, abstracts, and project reports, and presenting research findings at local, national, and international conferences.

Conceptualizes, designs, implements and directs research projects focused generally on how cancer treatments impact physiology to alter neurobiology and behavior, specifically on how fecal gut microbiome may be used as an intervention to ameliorate chemotherapy side effects using both mouse models to study mechanisms and human subjects for translation; develops, adopts and implements new laboratory methods; develops hypotheses and experimental approaches to hypothesis testing; plans, designs and conducts complex experiments in mice and culture preparations; maintains and develops mouse colonies; extracts, compiles, analyzes and evaluates data; prepares figures and writes manuscripts, articles, abstracts and research reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals; may attend and present research findings at scientific conferences; develops, writes and submits grant proposals of original research as principal investigator or co-principal investigator to extramural funding agencies to obtain salary and research support from outside funding agencies; participates in the training of post-doctoral researchers, research assistants, students and technicians within the laboratory; participates in supervision of students; participates in lab management.

The project is on the potential for fecal microbial transplantations to ameliorate the behavioral side effects of cancer chemotherapy that are associated with inflammation. We will use mouse modeling to study mechanisms and run a pilot clinical trial in women with breast cancer. We are collaborating with medical oncologists and gastroenterologists. The Pyter lab team generally studies the biological mechanisms by which tumors (outside the brain) and cancer treatments alter neurobiology and behavior. These mechanisms include immune, endocrine, and microbial. The successful candidate will receive mentorship and training in these approaches, as well as in experimental design, execution, data analyses, scientific communication, and other areas of professional development to advance their career interests and goals.

The Research Associate:

Dr. Ebrahimi-Nik’s Laboratory, situated within the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) and the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO), is devoted to unraveling the complex interactions between immune cells and tumor cells, with a particular focus on elucidating the functional dynamics of CD8 T cells that demonstrate tumor-rejecting capabilities. Post Doctoral Scholar to join the Polar Geomicrobiology Group in the School of Earth Sciences and Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at The Ohio State University studying microbial ecology in ice. The Post Doctoral Scholar will embark on a program of independent research with the primary goal to determine how microorganisms survive burial and maintain viability within glaciers and ice sheets. Duties will include conducting laboratory work centered around flow cytometry and molecular methods such as DNA extraction, PCR, and qPCR; processing and analyzing the data using bioinformatics tools to reconstruct and study microbial genomes; leading manuscript preparation for submission to peer-reviewed journals; and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Depression Recovery Center (DRC) in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Health offers a one-year (with an option for a second year) post-doctoral clinical fellowship. The program offers specialized training in the assessment and treatment of depression using evidence-based individual and group interventions, such as Behavioral Activation (BA), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).

The fellowship will prepare trainees to provide a broad range of behavioral health services in an outpatient behavioral health setting, with a focus on assessment and treatment of depression and other mood disorders. In addition to providing clinical services, fellows participate in clinical supervision, didactics, and research activiites as agreed upon with the mentor(s). Throughout the training year, fellows work closely with interdisciplinary team members (e.g., psychiatry, psychology, social work). Fellows will also have the opportunity to work closely with other DRC trainees and other psychology fellows in the department.

The fellowship will prepare trainees to provide a broad range of behavioral health services in an outpatient behavioral health setting, with a focus on women’s behavioral health. We provide patients with state-of-the-art care for mood and anxiety disorders, sexual health, substance use disorders and stress, with a special emphasis on the peripartum, gynecologic and breast cancers, menopause, and the menstrual cycle. In addition to providing clinical services, fellows participate in clinical supervision, didactics, and research activites as agreed upon with the mentor(s). Throughout the training year, fellows work closely with interdisciplinary team members (e.g., psychiatry, psychology, social work). Fellows will also have the opportunity to work closely with other WBH trainees and other psychology fellows in the department.

Post Doctoral Researcher to pursue continued research experience and training within the Department of Neuroscience; conducts independent research under the guidance of his/her scientific mentor to investigate understanding the mechanistic relationships (at a cellular, systems, and genetics level) between dysregulation of the immune and nervous systems following traumatic spinal cord injury.  

As a postdoctoral scholar, you will conduct independent research under the guidance of a scientific mentor, focusing on the domains of ovarian and endometrial cancer research. Your study will center on elucidating the mechanisms through which TMEM205 mediates the downregulation of the tumor suppressor protein PIAS3 in high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC). This knowledge is crucial for the development of innovative strategies for both prevention and targeted treatments. Evidence suggests that secretory epithelial cells within the distal fallopian tube (FT) may be the primary origin point for most HGSOC cases. Additionally, a growing body of data implicates members of the transmembrane (TMEM) protein family as oncogenic factors. In this study, you will investigate whether TMEM205 enhances the proliferation of fallopian tube secretory epithelial cells (FTSECs) and HGSOC cells by augmenting the secretion of extracellular vesicles (EVs) containing specific proteins. Furthermore, you will explore whether TMEM205 contributes to the progression of HGSOC by downregulating PIAS3. Moreover, the identification of a distinct EVs protein signature unique to HGSOC holds the potential to serve as a valuable biomarker for HGSOC. This research carries significant promise for translating laboratory findings into practical clinical applications that can benefit patients with HGSOC. It will also provide you with the opportunity to actively participate in and gain valuable experience in clinical and translational studies, particularly within the context of ovarian and endometrial cancer research.

A Post Doctoral Scholar will be involved in the project investigating the role of P4HA1 in endocrine resistance of breast cancer, which is recently awarded by external funding from NIH-NIA. Resistance to endocrine therapy and recurrence are the leading causes of mortality in breast cancer patients. P4HA1, the alpha subunit of Prolyl hydroxylation (P4H), is an enzyme hydroxylates proline into 4-hydroxyproline of collagens and other proteins with the -X-Pro-Gly- sequences as collagens in the endoplasmic reticulum. This project will focus on the uncanonical role of P4HA1 as a key player coordinates the crosstalk between endocrine resistance and cellular stresses (oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress), and explore P4HA1 as a novel therapeutic target for endocrine resistant luminal breast cancer. In vitro 2D/3D tissue culture model, in vivo breast cancer cell line and patient-derived xenograft models, as well as conditional knock out mouse model will be used in this project.

The Center for Tobacco Research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. The fellow will work primarily with Dr. Alayna Tackett on research related to tobacco control and tobacco regulatory science. Projects may include human laboratory research focused on understanding the behavioral and health effects associated with use of synthetic cooling agents in tobacco/nicotine products, respiratory effects related to the use of e-cigarettes, and behavioral correlates associated with oral nicotine pouch use. The Post Doctoral Scholar will study the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on health and the economy using interest and expertise in health economics, labor economics, urban / regional economics, and/or spatial econometrics; support and conduct detailed complex scientific studies, functioning as a subject expert on one of more phases of the project(s); prepare and/or present seminars, talks or lectures for dissemination of knowledge, particularly the results of research undertaken; assist in the management of one of more phases of the research effort; assist in the selection of key research personnel, including undergraduate and graduate students, to work on project(s) undertaken; work with and coordinate collaborating research staff and provide input on methods and procedures necessary to achieve desired goals; advise undergraduate and graduate students in the analysis and interpretation of research data; responsible for the extraction, analysis and presentation of research data; coordinate the analysis of research findings and prepare detailed summaries for submission to the sponsoring agencies; responsible for the development of research designs and procedures for data analysis on the project(s); write, edit and/or approve progress reports, technical reports and journal articles; edit grant proposals and draft IRB documents for submission; assist in the establishment of working relationships with potential sponsors and in the submission of detailed research proposals to governmental and private agencies.
