(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in the field of process monitoring (a)

The research activities from the Intelligent Manufacturing Group are divided into two aspects: First, it is to gain a fundamental understanding of dynamical processes, e.g. laser processing, tribology, fracture mechanics and predictive maintenance. Second, we focus on development of new in situ and real-time monitoring/control systems to ensure process stability and quality of the investigated processes.
Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc in Borehole Thermal Energy Storage Control (a)
The Urban Energy Systems Laboratory develops models and concepts for the planning and operation decentralized energy system technologies based on renewable energy and innovative districts, including prototypes and demonstration plants.
You will join the funded GOES project on “Geothermal based Optimized Energy Systems” where model and controller synthesis of a campus energy system with integrated borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) field, as well as abstraction of models/controllers to various settings, are key topics. This project is embedded in a larger international project under GEOTHERMICA and JPP Smart Energy Systems.
Based on measurement data collected from a real BTES installation at Empa, you will develop and implement control methods in order to ensure a carbon footprint aware predictive operation of the integrated system with an control horizon spanning from real-time up to seasonal. You will develop methods to extract local features/learnings in order to abstract and transfer them other contexts. You will have the freedom to develop and execute your research ideas in close collaboration with our team and our external scientific and industry partners.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc on development and characterization of low-emission concretes for implementation at Empa’s NEST (a)

NEST is the modular research and innovation building of Empa and Eawag where new technologies and materials can get developed and tested under real conditions. In our Concrete and Asphalt Lab, we focus on fundamental and application-oriented research as well as on product development in the field of cementitious and bituminous materials, with a special focus on sustainability of these materials.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Control-oriented model development and calibration towards digital twins for multi-energy systems (a)
The Urban Energy Systems Laboratory researches innovative building and decentralised energy system technologies. Our work is focused on achieving the energy transition where more of our energy is generated from clean, sustainable sources and energy efficiency is improved. The planning of energy resources requires a clear and comprehensive understanding of supply and demand, and we believe that a digital transformation strategy is critical to achieving this goal.
In the framework of the Horizon Europe REFORMERS project, we are looking for a motivated Postdoc candidate to design and implement digital twins for the reliable and cost-effective operation of district energy systems. You will focus on data-driven processes like acquisition, storage, analytics, and model-based support, including automated model derivation and validation. Additionally, you will also investigate operational decision support services. Working closely with demonstration sites, you will contribute to creating digital twins of energy valleys for efficient operation. You will translate research ideas to tackle these challenges in close collaboration with our interdisciplinary team and external scientific and industry partners. You will support our PhD students, publish in scientific journals, and participate in conferences.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc or Scientist chemical engineering in the field of polymer processing (a)
Our Laboratory for Advanced Fibers in St. Gallen pursues materials research in the field of polymers and fibers. We work towards the realization of a continuous catalytic spinning process, where the polymer is directly synthesized into fiber shape at negligible chain branching.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on green battery technologies
The Empa Laboratory of Cellulose & Wood Materials invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship position on biopolymer-based materials for battery electrodes and green batteries. Together with our team of experienced scientists and industry partners, you will develop a new generation of green and sustainable binder materials enabling energy efficient processing of batteries. This project bridges our activities in the fields of biopolymers and composite processing and will be carried out in a framework of a large national project in close collaboration with the Empa Laboratory Materials for Energy Conversion. Combining fundamental and applied science, the goal is to develop highly functional and industrially relevant material solutions, which may be implemented as commercial products. We envision that the generated knowledge will advance the use of green binder materials in batteries and lead to advancements lowering the overall CO2 footprint of battery manufacturing.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doc position on the development of MXenes
The Building Energy Materials and Components Laboratory is a leading provider of advanced materials, focusing on applications and integrating new solutions into next-generation energy-efficient concepts. We are devoted to research and development at the forefront of highly porous aerogels, additive manufacturing technologies, and 2D materials and their composites with unique functional properties. Our goal is to enable various future application scenarios.
For an ambitious internally funded project involving four different Empa laboratories, we are seeking a Postdoctoral researcher with a background in the liquid phase exfoliation of 2D materials, their potential combinations for new composite materials, and characterization technologies. In this project, a material synthesis platform will be developed to boost and expand Empa’s research efforts in the emerging class of 2D MXenes and demonstrate their potential in selected application fields. Your main focus will be on etching and exfoliation routes from novel MAX phase precursors, along with the characterization of the MAX phases and derived MXenes to understand the correlation of their surface terminations, microstructures, and tailored properties. You will collaborate closely with team members sup-porting materials selection with DFT calculations and AI-supported models, synthesis of the precursor MAX-phase, and a team specialized in chemical etching and exfoliation of 2D materials. Structure-property maps will be established to link the synthesis strategy to the final materials properties.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on Fully Slot-die-coated All-perovskite Tandem Solar Cells and Mini-modules
The Laboratory for Thin Films and Photovoltaics is known for its innovative research in the field of thin-film photovoltaic technologies. The Laboratory holds several world records for power conversion efficiency of flexible CIGS and all-perovskite tandem solar cells. We are looking for a motivated postdoc to develop high-efficiency and stable all-perovskite tandem solar cells and mini-module using slot-die coating and photonic curing methods.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doc position on the development of novel MXenes
The Laboratory for Functional Polymers is devoted to research and development at the forefront of novel organic materials, polymers and 2D materials with unique functional properties, designed to ena-ble future technologies.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in material science to develop laser welding applications
We are searching for candidates holding a PhD in material science or physics (preferably with the background in laser physics or photonics related fields). You are motivated and curious about new physical phenomena of laser/beam-matter interactions, you are ready to discover new horizons in laser processing and to bring your ideas to the technology level, you have a background and/or you know materials analysis methods/tools (i.e. spectroscopy, light/electron microscopy, sample preparation etc.). The knowledge of sensors, optics, electronics and hands on metal laser processing is an advantage. Excellent skills in both, verbal and written scientific communication in English are mandatory. Mastering German and/or French are helpful but not mandatory.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc’s in computer science to develop AI/ML monitoring of laser processing
We are searching for candidates having completed their PhD in computer science and/or mathematics. You are motivated and curious about the new AI/ML architectures, including physically informed ones. You are ready to discover the new horizons in laser processing and to bring your ideas in AI/ML to the technology level. You have a background in ML/AI, preferably with the knowledge in domains such as deep learning, reinforcement learning, knowledge transfer, self-supervised and online learning etc. The applications of AI/ML in automatic control and the understanding of the dynamic systems concepts is a plus, as well as a knowledge (on a conceptual level) of Bayesian probability. The basic understanding of sensors and laser processing is beneficial, but not obligatory. Excellent skills in both, verbal and written scientific communication in English are mandatory. Mastering German and/or French are helpful but not mandatory.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Two Scientists or PostDocs assessing release of materials from products (100%)
In line with Empa’s mission, the Technology and Society Laboratory (TSL) creates and transfers knowledge to support the transition to a more sustainability society. In particular, TSL analyses novel materials and emerging technology applications with a focus on associated material and energy stocks and flows, and evaluates them with regard to both natural environment and societal constraints.
Within TSL, the Environmental Risk Assessment and Management Group (ERAM), is looking for two postdocs/scientists responsible for experimental work about release of materials from biocidal nanocoatings and from textiles made from biobased fibers. The released fibers will also be tested for their toxicological effects.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in the field of wood (de-)bonding 80%-100%
We are looking for a highly motivated, creative, and communicative individual capable of bridging expertise between materials science, chemistry, and wood technology. The ideal candidate holds a Ph.D. in materials science, chemistry, or a related field with a strong background in adhesive technology. While an interest in biomaterials, and wood technology is advantageous, it’s not a strict requirement. We expect a track record of high-quality scientific publications and excellent communication and writing skills in English. Proficiency in German is beneficial.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 4-year postdoc / scientist position in the field of mid-IR frequency comb spectroscopy
The potential of dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) is rapidly unfolding and opens up new fields of applications. You will leverage on DCS to develop a mid-IR spectrometer for vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) with unprecedented spectral resolution, sensitivity, and speed. Together with our partners, you will apply this instrument to study the ro-vibrational nature of chiral molecules in the gas phase, e.g. for absolute configuration determination and molecular interaction studies.
This interdisciplinary project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Swiss Agency for Innovation Promotion. It lies at the interface of fundamental research and science-based innovation and involves close collaboration with our partners at ETH (Prof. F. Merkt and Prof. M. Quack) and ZHAW (Prof. J. Stohner).
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doc position in the advanced processing of cathode battery materials
Empa’s Laboratory for High Performance Ceramics is involved in the scientific research, development and characterization of advanced ceramics, composites and inorganic powder-based materials for structural and functional applications.
In this Innosuisse funded project, we aim together with our industrial partner and PSI at developing a high-yield, easily-scalable and sustainable synthesis process for the manufacturing of LNMXO cathode materials for rechargeable batteries, warranting high quality and industry relevant performance. To this extend, composition-structure-property maps will be established to link the synthesis strategy to the cathode performance properties. State of the art analytical techniques will be used to characterize the raw and final cathode materials. Hereby, synergistic effects between the raw materials and their processing conditions on the final cathode material characteristics and performance will be of particular relevance.
Advanced knowledge and record of accomplishment in the field of colloidal chemistry/processing and powder granulation will be required. Furthermore, good work structuring and coordination skills are required to develop the key know-how and process chain in this collaborative research project. A careful, meticulous and creative mindset will be appreciated in facing the manifold of project challenges and risks.
