We are seeking quantitatively-minded researchers with a PhD in physics, mathematics, computer science, mathematical/computational biology, evolutionary theory or cancer genetics.

Applications are sought for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to undertake research investigations in collaboration with and under the supervision of Dr Özgen Deniz in order to realise the objectives and development of the research programme on the Oncogenic and Immunogenic Roles of Transposable Elements in Cancer”. The appointed PDRA will be integrated into a multidisciplinary team and will collaborate with bioinformaticians, experimentalists and clinicians. The research will be based in the Centre for Haemato-Oncology, Barts Cancer Institute, within the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London.

Applications are invited for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate/Assistant to work on the EPSRC funded project – Multifunctional High Entropy Carbide and Boride Ceramic Composites: Compositional Space, Novel Synthesis, and Property Tailoring, in the research group of Prof Mike Reece. 

The use of five or more elements in equimolar proportions leads to interesting new effects in ceramics. Through the increase in their configurational entropy, it is possible to produce new stable materials, opening up a very large new compositional space where interesting and useful materials might be discovered. The random mixing of multiple elements can have a significant effect on their structural and functional properties, and through synergistic effects their properties can exceed the rule of mixture for their simple mono compounds. The project provides the opportunity to do original research in this rapidly emerging field.

We are investigating the processing and characterization of high entropy ultra-high temperature ceramics, thermoelectrics and ferroelectrics/dielectrics. In this project you will focus on the synthesis of novel high entropy carbides and diborides. These materials have very high melting points (>3000C) and high mechanical hardness and corrosion resistance. This makes them potentially useful for a wide range of applications in extreme environments, including cutting tools and hydrogen gas burners, etc. This project will focus on the discovery of new materials with good properties and then developing processing routes to optimize their mechanical properties. The project involves collaboration with Prof Shaowei Zhang’s group at Exeter University. 

Applications are sought for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work in the laboratory of Dr Tanya Soliman at Barts Cancer Institute. You will join a multidisciplinary team to develop a new method of identifying kinase-substrate interactions.

We wish to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Post-Doctoral Research Assistant with experience in cancer biology and molecular data analysis to study children’s low-grade gliomas at The Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London. Although the critical genetic alterations in these tumours are known to activate the MAPK/ERK signalling pathway, the exact molecular changes that regulate tumour behaviour and responses to targeted treatment need to be better understood. Using multi-omics profiling and kinase enrichment analysis, we have recently identified altered signalling networks in these tumours.  The researcher will study the critical regulatory mechanisms within these networks and will determine their responses to targeted treatment using tumour models. Applicants must hold a degree (PhD for post-doctoral level) in Computer Science / Electronic Engineering, or a related field. It is essential for candidates to have experience with deep learning methods, specifically music information retrieval, audio processing or a related discipline and strong programming skills in Python. Candidates will have a demonstrable ability to work independently and as part of a team, as well as experience with conducting research, understanding the research process and summarising findings. 

We are looking for a talented and motivated scientist to join our team who has already obtained a PhD (or is close to completion) in a relevant biological subject. Significant research laboratory experience in cell biology, tissue culture and microscopy are essential. Knowledge/experience in the field of centrosomes and/or microtubules would be an advantage. The post holder most be organized, have good communication and interpersonal skills. They will need to manage their time, performance and be able to solve complex problems.

Applicants should have completed an Undergraduate Degree in Computer Science/Electronic Engineering (or equivalent). Applicants at a PDRA level must have a PhD in Electronic Engineering. Candidates must have expertise in one or more of the following areas: reconfigurable metamaterials, metasurfaces (specifically reflecting intelligent surfaces) or phased array design. It would be desirable for applicants to have publications in leading journals within their respective fields.

We are looking for up to two highly motivated post-doctoral research associates (PDRA) to join the research group of Professor Cédric John. You will be key member(s) of the John Lab at DERI, contributing to our development and the success of our mission, and we are looking for individuals who are enthusiastic at the idea of helping to build a new research platform for data science for the environment and sustainability.

Each role will be funded for 24 months in the first instance, with an expected start date of April 2024. Appointment at Grade 5 will be made based on level of experience in relation to the duties and expectations of the role and person specification.

The position is funded by the MRC and for an initial period of 18 months, and a substantial part of the work can be done through remote access to computational resources. The successful candidate will work with a novel human data set and study the interaction between skeletal aging and metabolic disease, integrating existing bulk and recently produced single-cell level spatial transcriptomics. Their role is to help establish informatic workflows for advancing methodologies for the identification of clinically informative subtypes of cells and work with the team to produce international quality research publications.

The main purpose of this role is to develop multi-physics computational models and reveal liquid-solid impact damage mechanisms. The post will collaborate with two postdocs specialising in experimental mechanics and materials science and three PhD students. This post will also collaborate with Prof. Emilio Martinez Pañeda at the University of Oxford and Dr Chennakesava Kadapa at Edinburgh Napier University, who have extensive experience in computational mechanics and fluid-solid interaction.

A goal of human genomics research is to understand the molecular mechanisms by which genetic variation influences phenotypic outcome. We believe that genetic variation within the Ribosomal DNA (rDNA) will impact molecular and phenotypic outcomes. To test this hypothesis, we want to conduct a large cell-culture based analysis of differences in translational efficiency between Bangladeshi and White British ancestries, involving extensive cell culture of LCLs, profiling methods such as Polysome-seq or Ribso-seq, proteomic profiling, epigenomic analyses, RNA-seq analyses, and computational analyses. The candidate will have the opportunity to learn cutting-edge molecular biology. There will potentially also be opportunities to develop computational skills and to interface with the other population-based studies at QMUL.

The post is within the Sports and Exercise Medicine group, part of the WHRI. SEM is a well established  and expanding academic unit, which provides a supportive and friendly environment. The job will contribute to setting up and delivering D2P Data-to-practice, a three year research programme of work Data-to-Practice will define and translate best physiotherapy practice for six common musculoskeletal conditions using mixed-methods for an evidence translation programme.

Diseases of joints, muscles, and tendons (musculoskeletal conditions) are common and can be hard to treat. A lot of good research has been conducted on musculoskeletal conditions. However, there is a big delay between research being completed and changes in clinical care. 

We have already produced best practice guides successfully for two common conditions (heel pain and knee pain). We will create educational resources for all 8 conditions. 

A PhD in biological sciences is essential, as is experience of working with a team in a research environment. An understanding of the research process, high bench skills and a rigorous record of data are essentials. Experience in primary mammalian cell culture, RNA biology, Endoplasmic reticulum stress and flow cytometry are highly desirable.

The Post-Doctoral Research Assistant will be a highly motivated individual keen on a Cell Biology research career.  Using cutting-edge Super-resolution microscopy, the PDRA will explore how human cells maintain their chromosomes.

Chromosomal instability (CIN) is a hallmark of cancers and arises from errors in the process of chromosome segregation. However, the precise molecular reasons for CIN remain unclear. This project aims to track the molecular and biochemical changes that control chromosome segregation accuracy. The findings will expand our basic understanding of mitosis and help design strategies to tackle CIN.

The post holder will be expected to manage a caseload of participants in a portfolio of clinical research studies. They will have duty of care in supporting patients/participants and their families throughout their involvement in research trials.

Applications are sought for an experienced Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on a MRC funded project in the laboratory of Dr Tanya Soliman at Barts Cancer Institute. You will join a multidisciplinary team to investigate cell cycle vulnerabilities in cancer using multiomics approaches to identify novel druggable targets. This position is funded for 3 years.

Candidates are required to demonstrate an evidence-based research track record, commensurate to respective career stage. This multidisciplinary project will have a major component on engineering peptides and proteins. A PhD (or imminent completion) in this area or complementary disciplines (i.e., chemistry), is essential, along with proven experimental and analytical skills. Evidence of efficient problem-solving capabilities, highly organized experiment planning, and experience with working in teams is desired. We do not expect candidates to have prior experience of cell-free protein synthesis, which will involve formal training in the Moore group.

The role will involve the day-to-day independent running of the research project, the preparation of manuscripts using high-quality data, giving oral presentations of results and assistance with the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate members of the lab. As such, you will have the ability to communicate clearly (written and verbal), to organise and document your work efficiently and to deliver projects within an agreed timeframe.
