Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Ageing and Blood Donation
Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is responsible for the collection, processing and distribution of blood and blood products to the Australian community. Lifeblood’s activities are underpinned by world-leading, goal-oriented research and the loyal support of volunteer, non-remunerated blood donors. Lifeblood faces ongoing challenges to ensure the sufficiency of the blood supply as our population ages and the demand for blood-product derived treatments increases. Donors aged over 50 donate more regularly with fewer adverse events than young donors yet comprise only a small proportion of donors. In this ARC Linkage funded collaboration between the University of Queensland, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, and Silverchain, we will use quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate how those aged over 50 understand and engage with blood donation in the context of ageing, and how their involvement can be managed to maintain psychosocial wellbeing. By the end of this program of work we aim to have produced tailored, validated resources that may significantly benefit Australia by effectively engaging older adults to ensure the sustainability of the blood supply.
