Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate (Postdoc) in Distributed Artificial Intelligence for 6G Networks

The successful candidate will primarily contribute to the large Horizon Europe research project ETHER – sElf-evolving terrestrial/non-Terrestrial Hybrid nEtwoRks that started on 01/01/2023. ETHER is going to provide a framework for the integrated terrestrial/non-terrestrial network ecosystem that involves an efficient and zero-touch resource management, provides solution for key radio access network challenges, and identifies the business opportunities for potential stakeholders. To realize this novel system concept, ETHER relies on a multi-layered and unified space-aerial-terrestrial architecture, leveraging the benefits of Artificial Intelligence/ Machine Learning (AI/ML) for the optimization of the highly complex and heterogeneous “network of networks”. It will rely on the generation and processing of a massive amount of data that spans the terrestrial, aerial, and space networks. This data will be generated, e.g., by satellites, high altitude platforms (HAPS), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), airplanes, small cells, and User Equipment (UE)/Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices and can reveal hidden trends, thus, proactive network adaptation to foreseen requirements can be achieved. Due to the massive scale of these data, distributed AI/ML approaches are essential, such as multi-agent reinforcement learning and federated learning. Apart from ETHER, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development of such a distributed learning framework for additional applications that are of interest to SIGCOM. Indicative areas of interest are Industry 5.0, autonomous driving, and smart healthcare.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in Contemporary History

The PostDoc position is part of the FNR-funded project “Tracing the legacy of Edward Steichen: A glocal approach to the international reception and national heritagisation of the “Family of Man” exhibition” (FomLeg) which is realized in collaboration with the Centre National de l’Audiovisuel (CNA). This research project aims at problematizing the audience response to one of the most famous photographic exhibitions of the 20th century using a glocal history approach. In combining global, national, and local processes of circulation, translation, and appropriation of photographs, the project aims at retracing and understanding the itinerancy of the exhibition and its audience responses. While a separate PhD project will focus on the international reception of FoM, the PostDoc research is intended to study the heritization process of Edward Steichen in his native country Luxembourg where the exhibition has acquired the status of Unesco World Heritage. It aims at exploring the history of private and public collections linked to the artist within the political and socio-cultural contexts of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Next to academic publications the project will produce innovative forms and formats of transmedia storytelling, e.g. through the development of a deep mapping visualisation of the global circulation of FoM, combining a traceable itinerary of the exhibition around the world with virtual exhibits of those places of display studied as historical case studies in the project. In addition, a graphic novel will offer a research-based narrative about Steichen and the emergence of FoM as one of the most iconic photograph exhibitions of the 20th century.

(37) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning and Computational Chemistry

The project “PHysics- and data-driven multiscale modeling design of layered lead halide perovskiTe mAterials for Stable phoTovoltaICs” (PHANTASTIC) joins the efforts and competence of five scientific groups from the Université de Mons (Belgium), INSA of Rennes (France), Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (Israel), Technical University of Dresden (Germany), and the University of Luxemburg (Luxemburg). The global aim is to improve the long-term stability of 3D lead halide perovskites, the main limiting factor for the broad application of the material in industry.

The role of the TCP group, led by Prof. Alexandre Tkatchenko from the University of Luxemburg, is to develop reliable, efficient, and accurate machine learning force fields (MLFF) for molecular dynamics simulation of systems sizes ranging from ~1000 to 100.000 atoms while preserving the predictive power of first-principles modeling. Moreover, such simulations should correctly reproduce the formation and propagation of defects. This is a must-have requirement for any MLFF used to improve the stability of any material in general and 3D lead halide perovskites in particular. The novel equivariant MLFFs will be used with state-of-the-art training and sampling approaches, efficient DFT calculations, and recent developments in vdW methods to achieve this goal. These push the project to the frontiers of modern MLFF capabilities, making it challenging, engaging, and impactful.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering

As the successful candidate, you will primarily contribute to a partnership project with BGL – BNP Paribas, one of the major banks in Luxembourg. The title of the project is “AI for AI” and it concerns the design of an AI ‘metamodel’ tool that will monitor and improve AI algorithms effectiveness and robustness, allowing their application to business-critical use cases at scale. The objective of this project is to develop automated means to continuously monitor the performance of AI models (including NLP models) developed by BGL BNP Paribas and to determine when and how to retrain these models in order to improve their performance. Achieving these objectives requires addressing crucial research challenges such as the definition of proper quality metrics across the bank’s use cases, the identification and explaination of the limitations and blanks spots of the models, and the design of sustainable improvement mechanisms. Overall, the project supports BGL BNP Paribas in scaling-up their AI and data science activities through ground-breaking research, thereby enabling the widespread dissemination of AI products and services throughout the bank. The project is held in close collaboration with BGL-BNP Paribas and, as the successful candidate, you will be expected to program prototype tools showcasing the practical benefits of your research outcomes.

(42) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in Social Sciences – Project SEaSons

As part of the FNR-funded project SEaSons (Sustainability, Environmental Knowledge and Social Imaginations of Climate Futures), we are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Luxembourg (Campus Belval).

The objective of the SEaSons project is to investigate how different occupational groups imagine sustainable futures. In European latitudes, our assumption is that climate issues are experienced through the seasons and their relevance for food, transport, housing and energy. The study sets out with a qualitative study with a group of people we call ‘technical experts’, de facto stewards of sustainable climate action. At the same time their knowledge is – to varying degrees – marginal in the common discourses on transition politics and behavioral change. To reconstruct this knowledge, we will employ an innovative visual methodology combined with an interview methodology. Using pictures which refer to the everyday practices of our technical experts will allow us to bring into appearance their tacit and technical knowledge. The qualitative study will be complemented by a quantitative survey. The research has three goals: first, it seeks to identify the knowledge of technical experts, potential barriers to and drivers of sustainable action. Secondly, we want to develop participatory tools to allow different publics to engage with knowledge of sustainability. Thirdly, the study contributes to sociological research on the perceptions of the future concerning climate issues.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in computational systems biology

Methodological advances enable a deeper characterization of tissues on the cellular (single-cell omics) and spatial level (imaging). Computational methods are needed for data integration and for gaining deeper insights, e.g., into metabolic rewiring in neurodegenerative diseases. In this project we aim to 1. Further develop a computational approach for the integration of single-cell RNA-Seq and imaging data towards the detailed metabolic network modelling of brain tissue on a multi-cell population level. 2. Apply this framework for the deeper characterization of metabolic alterations in neurodegenerative diseases and for the prediction of novel drug candidates and combinations.
