Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doctoral Associate

The Driscoll lab seeks a Postdoctoral Associate to support research in an externally funded collaborative program investigating the biology by which neurons manage proteostress. More specifically, the PhD scientist will conduct research on questions related to molecular mechanisms by which protein aggregates and organelles can transfer from neurons to their neighbors.
The individual will report directly to the Principal Investigator. The research will include performing C. elegans genetic analysis, recombinant DNA techniques, CRISPR DNA editing, phenotypic analysis, epifluorescence microscopy, and confocal microscopy with quantitative image analysis. The candidate will be expected to contribute original research and data analysis for publication and grant applications. The candidate will also be expected to train and oversee undergraduate and graduate researchers within the lab on related projects. It is expected that trained students will have clear guidance and training on projects, and that they will grow towards independence under this mentorship.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow – Oldenburg Lab

The Oldenburg Lab uses and develops advanced microscopy techniques, including multiphoton holographic optogenetics and calcium imaging in awake head fixed mice, to understand how groups of neurons work together to enact motor actions. Neural activity is complex and high dimensional with some activity patterns being associated with movements and others not. By using our novel techniques, that can drive precise patterns of activity distributed across many neurons, we can test different theories of the ‘population code’, gaining a causal understanding of how population activity drives actions.

The postdoc will work with the PI to develop an independent project, that leverages the expertise of the lab and the skills and interests of the postdoc. In addition to multiphoton imaging and multiphoton optogenetics, projects may also involve animal training, electrical and optical engineering, electrophysiology, molecular biology, and/or computational analyses. The fellow will have the opportunity to guide the research of an undergraduate research assistant, if desired.

Mentorship is a core mission of the Oldenburg Lab. All members of the lab are expected to be helpful and supportive of each other. The PI will endeavor to do what he can to help each member succeed, both within the lab and when they eventually move on. As such, every member of the lab is encouraged to explore that which interests them and to share their specific expertise. In addition, the postdoc will have the opportunity to attend scientific conferences and learn appropriate scientific methods and procedures.

About Rutgers University, New Jersey, United States – Official Website

Rutgers University formally known as Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is a public land-grant research university based in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Chartered in 1766, Rutgers was originally called Queen’s College. It is the eighth-oldest college in the United States, the second-oldest in New Jersey (after Princeton University), and one of the nine U.S. colonial colleges that were chartered before the American War of Independence. In 1825, Queen’s College was renamed Rutgers College in honor of Colonel Henry Rutgers, whose substantial gift to the school had stabilized its finances during a period of uncertainty. For most of its existence, Rutgers was a private liberal arts college but it has evolved into a coeducational public research university after being designated The State University of New Jersey by the New Jersey Legislature via laws enacted in 1945 and 1956.

Rutgers today has three distinct campuses, located in New Brunswick (including grounds in adjacent Piscataway), Newark, and Camden. The university has additional facilities elsewhere in the state, including oceanographic research facilities at the New Jersey shore. Rutgers is also a land-grant university, a sea-grant university, and the largest university in the state. Instruction is offered by 9,000 faculty members in 175 academic departments to over 45,000 undergraduate students and more than 20,000 graduate and professional students. The university is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the Association of American Universities and the Universities Research Association. Over the years, Rutgers has been considered a Public Ivy.
