(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc Research Associate
The Argus Array will be the first very large optical telescope array, with a light collecting area equivalent to a 5-meter telescope and a 55-gigapixel digital camera, which will be the largest ever built. The Array will push our observations of the universe into a new regime, scanning the sky 100,000x faster than current nightly-cadence sky surveys. Argus will capture a continuous two-color, 55-gigapixel movie of the night sky, shared with the entire astronomical community in real-time through public transient alerts, images, and light curves with millions of epochs for hundreds of millions of stars. Joining our team of astronomers, telescope-instrumentalists, and data scientists, you will be responsible for the Argus Array’s systems engineering. Three years of prototyping efforts have developed and validated the system design and all major subsystems; we are now funded to scale up to the full Argus Array. This scale up involves the design and construction of the system’s external enclosure and tracking mount; the at-scale production of the telescope assemblies; construction of the array’s computing cluster, and the final assembly and commissioning of the Array. Major components of the Array, including the optical and sensor assemblies and the telescope cradle, will be manufactured by contractors under the lead engineer in collaboration with the systems engineer, the Argus Array Director and project team. Our project management philosophy emphasizes a small and local team; flat management structure; and a highly-collaborative working environment. We routinely produce prototypes and complex hardware in-house, and all team members can expect to perform significant hands-on engineering for Argus subsystems. The systems engineer will lead the validation of the Argus Array hardware subsystems, including the tracking and polar alignment drives, optical alignment systems, and laboratory and on-site testing. In collaboration with the lead engineer, the Argus systems engineer will also manage vendor oversight. This position involves working with the project team to evaluate the deployment sites currently being assessed in North America, the Chilean Andes, and the Canary Islands. The systems engineer will work with the lead engineer to manage construction, safety, quality management, risk, and project schedules. Additionally, the systems engineer will optimize the commissioning process for individual telescope units and develop and document efficient installation procedures to rapidly commission the 900-telescope Argus Array.
Postdoc summary/title: Post-Doc Research Associate-Bhatt Lab
The Bhatt Lab at UNC Chapel Hill is seeking motivated, talented and creative scientists to join our team. In our lab, we are advancing precision medicine by studying the gut microbiome which contributes to interindividual variability in drug responses, including efficacy and toxicity. By studying bacterial drug metabolism, we will develop strategies to predict and prevent drug-induced injury and reduce medication side effects, thus promoting public health. This research program will utilize samples from individuals of diverse races and ethnicity often understudied in biomedical research to understand how the microbiome alters drug response, thereby delivering on the promise of precision medicine for all.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc Research Associate
Launched in 2013, the Department of Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is the first new science department in the College of Arts and Sciences in nearly 40 years. Including the Chapel Hill Analytical and Nanofabrication Laboratory (CHANL) and the graduate program in material sciences, Applied Physical Sciences has united numerous scientific entities on campus to further its mission of finding interdisciplinary solutions to real-world problems. Its newest endeavor, BeAM (Be A Maker), is a university-wide initiative that incorporates Making into research, education, and entrepreneurship. BeAM is comprised of several spaces, including a makerspace in Hanes Art Center, Carmichael Residence Hall, and a 3,400 square foot Makerspace in Murray Hall, all of which serve the entire UNC community. Experience in biophysics and material science is a plus!
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc Research Associate
We are seeking research technicians and highly motivated, independent, and dynamic postdoctoral research fellows to undertake studies at the UNC HIV Cure Center, specifically in a project seeking to understand HIV persistence and eradication strategies for the cure of HIV. The UNC HIV Cure Center is a multi-disciplinary research center with various current translational studies. Our laboratory is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms of HIV latency and persistent HIV infection-associated complications. We seek to discover new anti-HIV latency therapeutic targets that will ultimately lead to the eradication of HIV, including kick and kill, direct killing, and deep latency. Various HIV latency models will be used in these studies, including in vitro and ex vivo cellular models of latency and ART-suppressed rhesus macaque models of latency. Tissues (CNS and peripheral compartments) isolated from people with HIV on ART, SIV/rhesus macaques, and HIV/hu-mice will also be studied.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc Research Associate
The postdoctoral research associate will use genetic and molecular biological approaches to investigate the genetic organization of a cluster of genes in Bordetella bronchiseptica that includes those encoding a two component regulatory system, a potassium uptake sustem, and two proteins of unknown funation. The postdoc will also use genetic technieus to construct B. bronchiseptica strains in which the teo component regulatory system is eother inactive or constitutively active and will conduct RNAseq experiments to investigate the scope of genes regulated by the two component regulatory system. The postdoctoral research associate will also train and supervise graduate and undergraduate students in the lab.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc Research Associate
The main responsibility of the position is to conduct research activities in the imaging center under the guidance of a faculty mentor in preparation for a full-time academic or research career. Successful candidate will join the preclinical imaging team to develop new imaging protocols and image analysis approaches, and develop new theranostic tools in the field of molecular imaging and radiation research. Some primary duties include: 1) Image acquisition using PET/CT, MRI, and optical imaging in animal models of neurological and oncological diseases; 2) Develop image analysis strategies and conduct image analysis for imaging projects; 3) Evaluate new imaging probes and applications, and develop image-guided treatment plan in animal models. The postdoctoral appointee is expected to drive efforts to publish results in peer reviewed journals and conferences. The initial appointment will be for one year, with opportunities for extension based upon performance and funding.

CIPhER Postdoctoral Fellowships in Pharmacy Education Innovation and Research. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc Research Associate
Qualified candidates will be highly motivated, possess strong communication skills and have a doctoral degree with research experience and training in one of the following fields: health economics, health services research, health policy or related field. The ideal candidate will have strong policy analysis skills and experience conducting quantitative analyses using Medicare and Medicaid files, commercial claims, electronic health records and other large data sets. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate
The Leiderman Research Group is broadly interested in the biochemical and biophysical mechanisms of blood coagulation, bleeding, and clotting. We use a data-driven, interdisciplinary approach that blends our mathematical, computational, and statistical expertise with biology and biochemistry collaborations. We work with numerical and analytic approaches to solve systems of ordinary and partial differential equations, sensitivity, and uncertainty analyses to assess our models, and a variety of current methodologies to estimate model parameters. A major goal of our group is to elucidate mechanisms that drive phenotypic variability in bleeding and clotting disorders. We are looking to hire a postdoctoral fellow interested in learning about and developing mathematical models of blood coagulation and building predictive algorithms based on these models, proteomic data, and clinical data. The desired candidate will drive research forward into independent lines of inquiry, help mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and interact with other members of the blood coagulation community.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc Research Associate – Dr. Brudno’s lab
This is a postdoctoral fellow position in the field of immunomaterials at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. The primary purpose will be to pursue research at the interface of materials science and cellular immunotherapy. The position will be centered on production and usage of genetically modified T cells, including CAR T cells.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate Zhang Lab
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work on NIH-funded projects to profile small molecule PLC modulators to treat cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, and to develop methods to deliver phospholipids into cells. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc Trainee
A Postdoctoral Trainee position is available on the newly funded Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Disease (RMD) Epidemiology and Outcomes T32 Training Program at the University of North Carolina. This position involves training in clinical aspects of RMDs, epidemiology, and a focus on data science and machine learning methodologies and their application to clinical data in RMDs. The research involves analytic skills, software expertise, and an understanding of machine learning and precision medicine approaches. The environment includes resources from a NIAMS-funded Core Center for Clinical Research, the UNC School and Department of Medicine, Thurston Arthritis Research Center, and the Gillings School of Global Public Health. An individual development plan and individualized mentoring team will be used to guide the development of the post-doctoral researcher. Interactions with pre- and post-doctoral trainees on the T32, CCCR and in a variety of research labs will be encouraged both formally (peer mentoring groups, mentoring/advisory sessions, work-in-progress presentations) and informally.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc Research Associate – Dr. Carpenter’s lab
This 2-year position is 100% grant funded and is located within the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy with flexibility to work from the Asheville or Chapel Hill campus. The postdoc will assist Dr. Carpenter with management and logistics of a recently funded NIH grant. The grant will involve developing a comprehensive measure of naloxone availability and investigating racial and geographic disparities in naloxone access. Tasks include: (1) assisting with primary and secondary data analysis; (2) assisting with audit and survey data collection efforts; (3) helping to train and supervise students involved with the phone audit; (4) attending monthly staff meetings and taking meeting minutes, (5) keeping updated information regarding the study’s phone audit of naloxone sales at NC community pharmacies, (6) creating quantitative study databases, (7) assisting with manuscript and progress report writing; and (8) assisting with the IRB submission and registration on clinicaltrials.gov.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc Research Associate
The Applied Biomechanics Laboratory (abl.bme.unc.edu) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a postdoctoral position to help lead a highly collaborative line of research designed to establish a paradigm shift in our biomechanical understanding and clinical management of age-related mobility impairment toward feasible and cost-effective devices to modify foot and ankle structure and function. To accomplish this, the applicant will have access to an integrative combination of experimental and computational techniques, from quantitative motion analysis and in vivo ultrasound imaging to musculoskeletal modeling and bioenergetic simulation. The position is funded for an initial period of 1 year. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc Research Associate
The purpose of this position is to contribute significantly to an NIH-funded project focused on the comprehensive characterization of binaural hearing abilities of adults across a wide age range, both with and without hearing loss. These abilities are assessed using parallel psychophysical and electrophysiological approaches. The Fellow is expected to become an integral part of the research team and to play a senior role in ensuring that on-going studies proceed efficiently and that new studies are designed and implemented with scientific rigor. It is also expected that the Fellow will contribute to the analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of project findings. At the same time, it is anticipated that the Fellow will identify and pursue focus areas within the overall project scope that can be cultivated into independent lines of investigation.
