We are looking for a highly motivated individual to fill a 1-year postdoctoral fellow position (with the possibility of an extension based upon performance and project needs/funding) to assist with processing and interpretation of multispectral thermal infrared data of prescribed fires as part of a larger project on active fire (hot spot) detection, fire propagation modeling, 3D plume characterization, and assessing environmental impacts of fires. The aim of the project is to quantify the thermal and gas emissions from prescribed fires in 3D in near real-time using thermal infrared spectroscopy. This will help determine relationships between fire intensity and vegetation change, with the goal of predicting the gas emissions from prescribed and wildland fires.

The postdoctoral fellow will join a team developing novel thermal infrared imagers for UAV deployment to characterize thermal and gas emission from wildland fires. The individual will be responsible for data collection, gas retrieval algorithm development, and thermodynamic modeling of wildfires, and evaluating vegetation change based on fire severity. The position requires the integration of multiple geophysical datasets and interpretations, and the development of new concepts and methods to automate the processing of field data in near real-time to provide insights to wildland fire commanders regarding thermal and gas dynamics, burn intensity, and rate of spread.

PhD must have been received within the past three years. This is a temporary training position that can be renewed annually, for a maximum of five years based upon performance review, progress towards research goals, and continuation of funding.

The Institute for Geophysics at The University of Texas at Austin (UTIG) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to study methane hydrates in geological systems.  UTIG is one of the three research units of the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin. Scientists and students at UTIG conduct expeditionary research in Earth Science in all parts of the world, and are also involved in planetary missions and climate modeling. These research projects produce large data sets and require computational analysis and visualization.

ESL analysts explore fundamental questions related to characterization of phenomenology that govern underwater acoustics, identification of novel mathematical and computational signal processing algorithms, and M&S of sonar array performance in complex environments.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled extreme rainfall, urban and tropical studies focused postdoctoral fellow to join our team. The successful candidate will have a strong background in atmospheric science, precipitation datasets, satellite remote sensing, surface hydrology, and data science, with a focus on investigating the extreme rain events. The candidate will be based at UT Austin and be affiliated in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. The researcher will get an opportunity to actively collaborate with different research groups at UT Austin. Under the supervision of Dr. Dev Niyogi, this research will investigate the complex relation between extreme rains, tropical systems, urbanization, and hydrological impacts.
