Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Discovering Carbon-Free Pathways for Sustainable Fisheries – DTU Aqua

We are looking for a researcher interested in creating and using mathematical models to predict the economic and ecological impact of changes in the fishing effort allocations of Danish fishing fleets. As part of the shift towards sustainable fishing and full enforcement of the EU Common Fisheries Policy, including efforts to achieve reduction by 2030 and climate-neutral fisheries by 2050, there is a pressing need for more in-depth research to understand feasible paths alongside the specific challenges faced by regional fleets, such as rising fuel prices, existing fleet structure, available stocks, and habitats, and their future change in distribution under a changing climate. The work will support achieving the goals of the EU Blue Economy and Ecosystem-Based Approach to Fisheries Management associated with the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

The research focus of this project is to identify more optimal harvest strategies and potential reallocation of fishing efforts among operators, fishing techniques, and spatial areas. This will involve using finely resolved vessel position data for selected vessels and obtaining quantitative (e.g. edible protein per litre used) and qualitative insights, for example, through interviews, on how the skippers operate the fisheries.

The goal is to optimize the economic and ecological outcomes while considering constraints such as costs, physical limitations, regulatory barriers, and the current management context. The project will ultimately integrate an “Evaluation and Guidance Toolbox for Low-Carbon and Low-Impact Fishing Techniques and Practices”. This evaluation framework (toolbox) will form the basis for exploring the feasibility of solutions and provide feedback and advice on choosing changed techniques and/or practices to potentially be applied by the fisheries sector.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Machine Learning using Tensor Networks – DTU Compute

Are you interested in developing novel machine learning methodologies that are scalable, reliable and explainable and that can address imminent challenges both within quantum physics and the life-sciences?

As our new colleague your job will be to develop novel computational frameworks for machine learning by use of tensor network representations. In particular, you will push the boundaries of

  • Scalability, drawing upon recent large-scale TN capabilities in physics.
  • Reliability, exploring uncertainty quantification and robust inference in machine learning
  • Explainability, leveraging identifiability and unique recovery explored using tensor decompositions within the life-science domain.

A Tensor Network (TN) is a data structure for representing high-dimensional arrays (tensors) in a low-rank format as a sequence of smaller cores which can be stored and manipulated efficiently. TNs provide promising tools for large-scale machine learning, as they allow for exponential savings in memory and processing time, while often allowing for explainable structure extraction. However, key obstacles remain, preventing their widespread use. These include limitations in terms of reliable large-scale inference, uncertainty quantification, as well as efficient TN structure identification, assessment, and interpretation. You will address these obstacles and demonstrate how the developed tools can address important challenges within quantum physics as well as large-scale life-science data modeling.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Experimental Quantum Random Number Generation – DTU Physics

ou are passionate about working at the absolute forefront of quantum technology? Here is the opportunity for you to fulfil your dreams and ambitions!

Random numbers have many applications, from cybersecurity to simulations to gambling. Since measurements in quantum physics deliver random outcomes, quantum random number generators (QRNGs) deliver the best randomness of all physics-based generators. Device dependent solutions, i.e. generators whose devices are rigorously mathematically modelled, deliver unparalleled performance, while semi-device independent and device-independent generators usually trade speed with security improvements. We are experimentally working on light-based generators measuring the quadrature fields of light.

Within this position you will advance QRNGs by demonstrating improved protocols developed together with theoreticians in the Innovation Fund Denmark Grand Solutions project TripleQ. As part of your work, you will be exploring semi-device independent and device-independent QRNG implementations.

The position will be hosted by the Section of Quantum Physics and Information Technology (QPIT) at the Department of Physics of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and will be in close collaboration with Alea Quantum Technologies, a spin-off of DTU developing QRNGs. We are a dynamic, innovative and diverse research team focused on continuous-variable quantum communication. Our team is passionate about advancing secure communication based on quantum physics. We have a wide range of academic and industry collaborations, e.g. as part of the EU Flagship on quantum technology and the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Mode-Division Multiplexing Systems with Metasurface Multiplexer/Demultiplexer – DTU Electro

DTU Electro has been working in all areas of electrical and photonic engineering, including a strong focus on optical communications. We hereby announce a Postdoc position within mode-division multiplexing systems using metasurfaces. This project is part of the MEMORY project funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The MEMORY project aims to significantly advance the state-of-the-art in ultra-high-capacity optical communications and this Postdoc project will be at the heart of this activity.

The MEMORY project addresses the key question of how one can pack data channels in optical transmission links with a density order of magnitude higher than current optical fibres. It is an increasingly pressing issue due to the rise in traffic demands for digitalization. The most spatially dense way of packing data channels is achieved by exploiting the properties of guided light. Known as optical spatial modes, they are specific stable spatial distributions of the light inside an optical fibre. Multiple modes can exist simultaneously in the optical fibre and act as parallel data channels to realize so called mode-division multiplexing (MDM) or in general, space-division multiplexing (SDM). The mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) is an essential component in MDM systems, enabling orders of magnitude increase in transmission capacity.

Among the different types of modes that exist, the so-called “twisted photons”, or modes carrying an orbital angular momentum (OAM) of different orders are particularly interesting. The MEMORY project aims at developing a highly scalable mode multiplexer enabling multiple OAM beams for further transmission through a single optical fibre.

This advanced solution aims to enhance the overall system lifespan, improve efficiency, and reduce the retrofitting costs typically associated with existing motor installations. To achieve these goals, a Silicon Carbide (SiC)-based converter system will be employed. This can potentially reduce the size of the filter, increase switching frequency, and reduce both acoustic and electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise. Additionally, it will minimize losses in cables and motor systems, eliminate the need for shielded cables, and support parallel connections in multi-drive systems. Additionally, the edge processing capabilities will enable the collection of extensive data from multiple drives. This data can be leveraged to create data-driven digital twins for the targeted applications, facilitating condition monitoring, and enhancing overall application efficiency.

In this context, the project tackles highly compelling challenges, including the evaluation of various converter topologies and the development of advanced modulation and control algorithms aimed at reducing common mode noise while achieving robust dynamic performance for both single and parallel electrical machine connections. Moreover, integrating edge capabilities, IoT, and Cloud computing into the decision-making processes of converter systems presents a significant challenge. This integration holds the potential to unlock the flexibility of electric drive assets, enabling their participation in ancillary service markets, enhancing condition monitoring, and improving overall system efficiency.
