PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researchers in the Digital Waters (DIWA) Doctoral Pilot

The Aalto University is inviting applications for Doctoral Researcher positions in the Digital Waters (DIWA) doctoral education pilot. The duration of the positions is three years, starting no later than in January 2025. The open positions cover variety of topics related to water and its management (see below the link to each open position), and we therefore encourage applications from a diversity of fields.

DIWA doctoral pilot positions are funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The research themes of the open positions are linked to DIWA Flagship (www.digitalwaters.fihttps://digitalwaters.fi/phd-pilot/apply/ ) funded by Research Council of Finland. The flagship is a leading research and innovation ecosystem, bringing research and new innovations together to support decision-making and management in the water sector – digitally. DIWA enables a transition towards the digital representation of real-world water systems (Digital Twin) to reproduce hydrological storages, their states, fluxes and processes, as well as ecosystem responses with novel options for improved scenario analyses, planning and governance.

The doctoral pilot will contribute to all five Flagship research themes related to hydrosphere processes; new observational systems; integrated analysis and modelling; digital services, platforms, and business applications; and transformative water management. The relevant research areas in the pilot cover variety of contexts, including river systems, groundwater processes, agricultural systems, and pristine, rural and urban areas. Similarly important are the interactions and responses in the hydro-, atmo- and cryosphere as well as diverse linkages between water, climate, land, and ecosystems. The large datasets and other information gathered during DIWA flagship will be available for doctoral researchers. Both the DIWA flagship and the doctoral pilot aim for major societal impact, and will collaborate with key stakeholders from public and private sector as well as civil society.  

The DIWA doctoral pilot offers a unique and multidisciplinary research and learning environment that provides systematic training, access to excellent research infrastructure, and professional career development. Doctoral Researchers will be working closely with the researchers, supervisors, and partner organisations of the DIWA ecosystem, including cities and municipalities, ministries, companies, research institutes and civil society organisations. Doctoral Researchers can have secondment periods in the partner organisations outside academia. The pilot will include altogether 60 Doctoral Researchers, out of which, 14 Doctoral researchers at Aalto University.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Remote Sensing

The Remote Sensing Research Team (https://www.aalto.fi/en/remotesensing) is seeking a highly motivated doctoral researcher to work in a project “Transferable models for remote sensing of forest biomass with spaceborne lidar” funded by the Research Council of Finland.
Our project develops new methods for remote sensing of forest above-ground biomass. We will use satellite laser sensors to provide regional estimates of biomass and its change 2003–2027 for the entire European boreal forest zone. Satellite lasers can directly measure tree heights and forest canopy densities. Statistical and physically-based models are used to convert these measurements into accurate estimates of biomass. Special attention is paid to model transferability, which guarantees that the predictions are reliable for different types of forests. Regional estimates of biomass change and its components are calculated for the Nordic and Baltic countries, as well as European Russia. Our project will help to improve and harmonize the quality of European forest resource information.

The main tasks of the doctoral researcher will be to conduct scientific research on the project’s theme, and to undertake doctoral studies at Aalto University. The topic of the doctoral thesis must be linked to the use of physically-based forest reflectance models in interpretation of spaceborne lidar data, but the exact content of the thesis can be tailored based on the candidate’s interests and skills. The doctoral researcher will work in the Remote Sensing Research Team. The work will also entail close collaboration with the consortium partner at University of Eastern Finland School of Forest Sciences, as well as opportunity to collaborate with the international partners.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in field of biomass chemistry

The Circular Biobased Materials group (www.aalto.fi/en/department-of-bioproducts-and-biosystems/circular-biobased-materials) is dedicated to advancing sustainable solutions for materials development, production, and utilization. Our primary focus lies in harnessing the potential of non-utilized biobased resources to create materials that adhere to the principles of circular and bioeconomy. We seek strategies to better convert biobased precursors into materials, while considering the best scenario for their end-of-life.

The work will be done in close collaboration with Prof. Monika Österberg and the Bioproducts Chemistry research group https://www.aalto.fi/en/department-of-bioproducts-and-biosystems/bioproduct-chemistry. The Bioproducts Chemistry group is dedicated to replacing fossil-oil based materials by renewable biomaterials from natural resources, such as forest biomass. We conduct interdisciplinary research on bio-based material science and surface chemistry of lignocellulosics. Efforts are laid on finding novel application possibilities for the main plant polymers; cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose. Through the two groups you will have access to a broad network across Europe and the Americas.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in “Application of Machine Learning for Model Development in Hydrogen Reactive Flows”

The research will be carried out at Aalto University’s Energy Conversion and System research group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In this position you will have a chance to make an impact on developing advanced numerical models for turbulent reactive flows of e-fuels including ammonia/hydrogen blends using machine learning techniques.

You will develop advanced numerical models using detailed CFD data such as direct numerical simulations (DNS). Also, you will gain experience in conducting high-fidelity numerical simulations and analyzing your data using machine learning techniques. You will have the opportunity of research visits to the best research groups of the field around the world as well as meeting highly-talented researchers of the field through international seminars and conferences.

Your research will be part of a research project in which your work will consist of computational studies to find proper numerical models for turbulent reactive flows. In this work, you will be able to interact with other computational researchers in our group working on various other applications (e.g. combustion in burners/engines, numerical modeling, programming, etc). As part of your doctoral candidate duties, you will also gain experience in teaching and instructing other students.

We are seeking a doctoral researcher to join the Robotic Instruments research group at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation at Aalto University. This position will focus on the autonomous dexterous manipulation of fine and soft objects. Under the supervision of Prof. Quan Zhou and  Dr. Houari Bettahar, you will have the opportunity to engage in challenging and rewarding research, developing innovative methods and algorithms for robotic fine manipulation of soft objects.

Fine and soft objects, such as seeds, insects, delicate plant fibers, biological tissues, soft polymers, gels, thin wires, electronic components, and optical fibers, are abundant in both natural and artificial environments. Due to their softness, irregular shapes, and fragility, autonomously manipulating these objects poses a significant challenge to robotics and intelligent machines. In this role, your research will aim to overcome these challenges by developing autonomous manipulation algorithms and methods that leverage multiple precision manipulators working collaboratively to achieve dexterous manipulation.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral researcher in next-generation inkjetable materials

The research will be in the framework of the project “3D-GRINO-PPCI, 3D Graded Index Optics Printed using Photocurable Inks”. 3D-GRINO-PPCI will deliver locally optimized polymeric materials with designed gradient compositions to tailor the performance of the optical systems well beyond the capabilities of today’s technologies. We will present a groundbreaking opportunity to replace conventional optical lenses, where material interface (form) refracts light rays, with lenses with parallel tailored refractive index distribution (graded-index GRIN), which makes it possible for the optical rays also to bend inside the optical elements. Although freeform optics have already been introduced and simple geometrically symmetric GRIN optics are possible to manufacture – separately – our unique multi-material 3D printing technology will enable simultaneous control of form and GRIN structure with accuracy, flexibility, and functionality never seen before. We will also develop optical design algorithms that will benefit from the researched materials and be able to optimize optical systems for a much smaller number of elements than ever before. One key element of the new algorithms is ‘Micro-correction of Chromatic Aberration’, which keeps all colors of white light traveling together by proper choice of newly developed photocurable ink materials with respect of the refractive indices and the Abbe numbers.

The 3D-GRINO-PPCI is a Research Council of Finland Consortia Funding between Aalto University and the University of Eastern Finland. For one of the working packages, we are seeking a highly motivated doctoral researcher to join our innovative project focused on developing next-generation inkjetable and rapidly photocuring polymeric materials for optical applications. This project aims to advance the field of optical materials by creating formulations that enable precise voxel-by-voxel manufacturing of 3D structures with pre-defined refractive index gradients.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher to study coherent interaction-free measurements using Superconducting Qubits and Circuit QED

We have a four-year Doctoral Researcher position funded by the Research Council of Finland. The position is primarily focused on coherent interaction-free measurements for the efficient detection of microwave photons, which can have a wide range of applications in the indirect capturing of the signatures of axions, laying the foundation for a new type of microwave spectrometer, counterfactual quantum computation, and secure quantum communication. This project utilizes superconducting quantum circuits as an experimental platform – presently one of the most promising platforms for future quantum computers and quantum simulators. This field of research has seen tremendous development in recent times, and currently offers plenty of exciting opportunities for developing yourself as a quantum physicist.
