PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Testing a Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Distressed Romantic Couples (two positions)
We are starting an NWO financed project to study the effects of a mindfulness-based intervention among distressed romantic couples. Many claims have been made about the potential of mindfulness to improve relationship wellbeing, but such claims have not been tested systematically. The current study will be the first large-scale study to do so, using rigorous methods and being well-grounded in scientific theories of mindfulness and relationships. In addition to self-report measures, the project will make use of behavioural observation, implicit relationship evaluation measures, and physiological measurements. A thrilling aspect of the project is that the study will be designed in collaboration with a prominent mindfulness skeptic as an ‘adversarial collaborator’.
You will collaborate closely with the project team at Radboud University and the Radboud university medical center (Radboudumc), and you will take a leading role in the realisation of several objectives. You will develop the intervention in co-creation with the participating couples and mindfulness and relationship experts. In close collaboration with the other PhD candidate on this project, you will set up a randomised controlled trial that will test the mindfulness-based intervention against an active control group on various relationship outcomes, while exploring various mechanisms. The project should result in general guidelines for mindfulness-based couple interventions. You will write scientific papers, resulting in the completion of a PhD thesis at the end of your employment contract.
As part of the BSI Graduate School PhD programme, you will complete several courses related to the basic professional skills of scientific researchers such as scientific integrity and data management. We will also encourage you to attend and present your work at relevant workshops and conferences. You will be given opportunities to develop your teaching skills and/or to make a start with or work on your teaching portfolio for the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ).

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Interactive Voice-Based AI for Dementia Care
As care professionals are less available in the current job market, this may become a heavy burden for informal carers. Interactive AI solutions, such as embodied conversational agents, offer promising opportunities to alleviate some of this burden, as they are cost effective, scalable and user friendly. In particular voice-based AI offers interesting possibilities, since it provides elderly PwD with a natural interface that allows them to talk about their daily activities (e.g. cooking, medication intake) without becoming too intrusive. Moreover, voice diagnostics based on machine learning methods hold great promise in dementia care because of its usefulness in diagnosing and monitoring neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
In this project you will therefore contribute to the development and evaluation of an interactive voice-based AI system that aims to improve the Quality of Life of elderly PwD. The personalised, enduring and adaptive support of this system is intended to improve over time, based on data-driven learning technologies, and will include an embodied conversational agent that supports PwD in their daily activities and social relations. First versions of such an agent for supporting older adults have been developed and tested in other projects (BLISS and QoLEAD). In addition to the conversational agent, the envisioned framework includes technologies from areas such as cloud computing, game development, machine learning, symbolic modelling and reasoning, and home automation and/or wearable sensing. In co-creation with the stakeholders, these technologies will be advanced and combined into a framework for ’blended’ network care (i.e. care from informal and professional carers, supported by socially interactive AI).
In this context, the Faculty of Arts is looking for a PhD candidate in interactive voice-based AI for dementia care. You will work in a multidisciplinary group consisting of PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and professors in different domains such as human-computer interaction, virtual humans, linguistics, language and speech technology, speech recognition (ASR), NLP, and game design.
In this project we aim to collaborate with the teams of two ongoing related projects, one aims to develop a virtual human to support people with memory loss, and the other is the QoLEAD project, which focuses on using AI solutions to improve the quality of life for people with Alzheimer.
In this project you will work on designing dialogues and study how conversational agents can adapt to the level of speech comprehension of users with a neurodegenerative disease, for example by using a slower speech rate, a clearer pitch, a smaller vocabulary and shorter sentences. You will also study how the agent can fix a dialogue that went wrong. This may also include the development of tools for diagnosing the stage of dementia based on user speech.
Other tasks that you may work on include: 1) creating (speech) data collection specifications and risk assessment in collaboration with stakeholders from the medical domains, 2) developing and testing algorithms for appropriate virtual human behaviour and animations, and 3) design and evaluate voicebot dialogues with other persons in the social network of users with neurodegenerative diseases, such as formal and informal caregivers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Neuromorphic Human-Computer Interaction at the Human Media Lab
As a PhD candidate in the emerging field of Neuromorphic HCI, you will work towards the goal of developing a more real-time, interactive and energy-efficient AI that is directly inspired by models of the human brain. Your research will be based on insights derived from computational neuroscience, such as the use of predictive coding strategies to predict user intent. Your approach will rely on the use of Bayesian methods, in which existing knowledge of user states is integrated with observations from sensory modalities using probabilistic models. The specific focus of your PhD research will be determined by your interests and competencies. Possible topics include:
Development of novel algorithms for real-time AI based on Bayesian models of human behaviour; Development of applications of real-time AI in simple yet effective augmented reality tools; Scientific empirical validation of models or prototypes in a way that evidences their effectiveness.
We offer the opportunity to work at the bleeding edge of AI and HCI research and to collaborate with leading experts in Human-Computer Interaction and Computational Neuroscience (Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour) as well as with universities around the world. You will be supervised by Professor Roel Vertegaal to conduct research on your topics of interest and publish your results in top-ranked international academic conferences and journals. Beyond academia, your research will have the potential to impact commercial applications.
You will spend about 10% of your time (0.1 FTE) assisting with teaching a course on Neuromorphic Human-Computer Interaction at Radboud University. This will typically include tutoring practical assignments, grading coursework, and supervising student projects.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Small Druglike Molecules for Modulating Protein-Protein Interactions
We aim to develop new drug development technology based on the design and synthesis of a unique class of molecules to modulate the so-called protein-protein interactions in the cell. Protein-protein interactions are very common in metabolic pathways and their malfunctioning leads to diseases. Using computer modelling, and by synthesising unique compound libraries and screening for biological activity, new druglike molecules will be developed that may form the basis for future drugs.
As a PhD candidate on this multidisciplinary project, your main task will be to develop new and efficient synthesis routes to novel classes of small molecules that can interfere with protein-protein interactions. You will closely collaborate with other project partners on several aspects of early-stage drug discovery, including molecular modelling, scale-up of strategic building blocks, automated library synthesis, assay development and screening for biological activity.
In addition to conducting research, your PhD position will include other training activities, such as participation in teaching (10%). This involves assisting with lab courses, as well as supervising and training Bachelor’s and Master’s students as part of your own research project.
