PhD position summary/title: PhD position in data-driven modeling of ocean-based renewable energy systems

Securing future electricity supply while minimizing climate and environmental impact is one of today’s foremost challenges. Offshore renewable energy systems (RES) offer significant potential to meet the electricity demand, with emerging technologies such as floating offshore wind and wave power

devices showing promise. However, there are knowledge gaps on the reliability of these technologies in the offshore environment. Non-linear dynamics can give rise to dynamical instabilities and extreme loads on critical components. These challenges are a threat not only to a secure electricity supply, but also constitute potential vulnerabilities in our society.

The PhD project will model and develop offshore renewable energy systems, with a focus on wave power and floating offshore wind. The project will develop methods to predict non-linear dynamics and vulnerabilities based on data-driven methods, computational fluid dynamics simulations and machine learning. We offer a varied and exciting work that is designed by the PhD candidates together with the research team. The PhD student will be supervised by at least two supervisors and the research group consists of several seniors and PhD students working on different aspects of renewable energy and the electric grid. The Department of Electrical Engineering also gives a salary supplement to the doctoral students at the department.

We are looking for a motivated and ambitious student for theoretical studies of ion transport in solid-state battery materials. For this purpose, the main focus is to develop a multiscale computational framework for modelling ion-conductivity in complex battery materials. This framework will be used to carry out a high-throughput screening where a large number of hypothetical materials will be studied by systematically varying its composition. The large amounts of data provided by the screening will be used to decipher important connections between material structure and conductivity by using advanced data-mining strategies and machin-learning.

Harnessing both spin and orbital angular momentum, electrons offer two powerful properties for advancing spintronics and orbitronics—fields poised to revolutionize information technology. PhD position summary/title: WISE Doctoral (Phd) position in Solid State Physics with focus on the design and investigation of novel magnetic nanocomposites for environmental applications

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering aims to be an environment for successful and valuable research and education with a focus on materials science solutions for important societal challenges. Our department is an exciting workplace with research in a broad technology-related area, from basic research to large-scale applied research, and with close contacts with students through the department’s involvement in engineering and master’s programs. Our research and teaching are conducted within seven divisions with different research focus.

In the project, we aim to synthesize and characterize functional magnetic nanocomposites and investigate their potential as nano-adsorbents and photocatalysts for the removal of pollutants from water via adsorption and/or catalysis. Solution-based synthesis techniques will be used to synthesize nanocomposites that will contain magnetic components, preferably iron oxides, to enable magnetic separation. The synthesized materials will be characterized by morphological/structural analysis, surface investigations, and detailed magnetic measurements. The catalytic properties of the nanocomposites and their adsorption efficiencies will be investigated to determine their ability to remove water contaminants by measuring adsorption isotherms and performing kinetic studies. The project also includes the development of a magnetic separator system for separation experiments to measure the possibility of recycling and reusing the synthesized materials.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in combinatorial optimization with applications in computerized image processing

Many problems in applied data- and computer science are naturally formulated as optimization problems. In this paradigm, we solve problems by first formulating a criterion that describes the qualities of a good solution. We then use various optimization methods to find a solution that is as good as possible according to our chosen criterion. The ubiquity of this approach to problem solving means that good optimization methods are a key enabling technology in many areas of computer science and its many applications.

In this project, we focus on a special class of combinatorial optimization problems, called lexicographic max-ordering (Lex-MO) optimization problems. Our interest in this class of problems is motivated by a recent discovery made by our team: Many optimization problems that are currently considered infeasible to solve in practical time (NP-hard) can be solved in low-order polynomial time if we recast them as Lex-MO problems! This includes many problems that naturally occur in practical applications.

The overall aim of this proposal is to provide a detailed and systematic characterization of the class of Lex-MO optimization problems that can be solved using efficient, low-order polynomial time, algorithms. This project aims to develop new algorithms, methods, and insights in combinatorial optimization with a high potential impact on many applied problems in data analysis and computer science.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science focusing on Automated Verification and Debugging of Numerical Programs

PhD thesis projects are available as part of the ERC Starting grant project HORNET on practically usable automated verification and debugging techniques for numerical programs. These programs are widely used in safety-critical systems, data analysis, weather forecasting, physics, engineering and more, but verifying and debugging their accuracy and reliability today is challenging due to rounding errors and limitations of current tools. One aspect that this project focuses on is accuracy of finite-precision programs with respect to a real-valued (and thus error-free) program specification. Possible thesis projects can explore a variety of directions such as automated program verification, specification inference, fault localization, practical usability, etc. in the context of numerical finite-precision programs. Such projects will typically include both a theoretical part, developing new techniques and approaches, as well as implementations that can be practically used.

This position is part of the research project “Smart and bidirectional workplace electric vehicle charging as electricity grid support”, financed by the Swedish Energy Agency. The project is a collaboration between Uppsala University, Mälardalen University, Vasakronan AB, EPspot AB and Idun Real Estate AB, and will investigate how workplace-based controlled electric vehicle charging with local solar power generation can participate in Svenska Kraftnäts grid support markets.

The position entails developing statistical and machine learning models for grid support via ancillary services from smart electric vehicle charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G). It includes developing and utilizing optimization and probabilistic forecasting methodology for estimating availability of electric vehicle battery capacity on both single electric vehicle level and on city-scale. Part of the work is in collaboration with the companies in the project, where scientific results are to be used in their system.

The main task for a doctoral student is the doctoral education, which includes both participation in research projects and postgraduate courses. The tasks may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, however limited to a maximum of 20% of the working hours.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in offshore renewable energy systems’ digital twin modeling

The offshore renewable energy sector is driving the green transition globally and becoming one of the largest industries with a great potential for growth in coming years. Nonetheless, managing the intermittency of offshore renewable energy supply due to weather patterns imposes challenges in their grid integration.

This PhD project will model and develop offshore renewable energy systems focusing on offshore wind, microgrids, energy islands, and energy storage systems. The PhD candidate will work on the development of digital twins of offshore renewable energy systems with integrated energy storage, as well as various innovative grid-supporting solutions.The project is offered within the Interreg North Sea programme co-funded by European Union, and involves a close collaboration with industry and other research organizations located in the North Sea Region.

As opposed to single-robot setups, collaboration of multiple robots increases efficiency, enhances flexibility, and provides greater robustness in complex, dynamic environments. Whether it’s for industrial automation, search and rescue missions, environmental monitoring, or space exploration, the ability of multi-robot teams to communicate and adapt on the fly to new challenges creates a resilient and scalable solution to tasks that are too difficult or dangerous for humans. Nevertheless, the efficient deployment of multi-robot systems entails significant challenges since robots are often required to deliver complex, time-constrained tasks in obstacle-cluttered and dynamically-changing environments that induce unknown disturbances and unforeseen events.

The purpose of this project is to develop a theoretical and algorithmic foundation for the efficient coordination of autonomous robotic systems for delivery of complex tasks with deadlines. Special focus will be given to teams of ground robots and robotic manipulators. The algorithms must be able to adapt to environmental and system uncertainties and guarantee safety of the robots and the surrounding environment.  A variety of inter-discplinary methods combining control-theory, motion planning, and learning are expected to be used for the project. The developed algorithms will be validated on robotic platforms.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Microbiology – Symbiosis in Anaeramoeba

Collaborations with unrelated cells via symbiosis are common in nature. In most symbioses, nutrients are exchanged between cells in a process known as syntrophy. Scientists have been aware of syntrophy and symbioses and have studied them for over a hundred years. Despite the long study of symbioses, most have not been characterized in detail, often because the partnerships are fragile or because the organisms cannot be grown in the laboratory. A large category of such unexplored symbioses occurs in oxygen-poor environments, such as in sediments and animal guts where protists directly influence ecosystems by consuming large amounts of prokaryotes. These environments are highly significant for the cycling of many substances in nature and for humans.

This PhD project aims to investigate in detail how symbiosis functions in oxygen-poor environments. The subject of the study is an amoeba, Anaeramoeba, which was recently isolated from oxygen-poor marine sediments. Anaeramoeba has a symbiotic partner, a sulfate-reducing bacterium, that lives closely adjacent to the amoeba’s hydrogenosome (a reduced version of the mitochondrion). The bacterium thereby prevents the amoeba from being poisoned by the high levels of hydrogen it produces. The bacteria have access to the cell’s exterior through thin channels, allowing them to absorb sulfate from seawater. How the close and intricate connection between Anaeramoeba and the bacterium arose and has been maintained over time is still completely unknown. Methods that will be used in the project include proteomics, RNA sequencing, fluorescence microscopy, transfection, as well as other molecular, bioinformatics, and microbiological techniques.

The recent developments in population genetic and statistical methods to handle large-scale genetic information from many individuals coupled with advances in molecular tools to obtain genetic data from prehistoric individuals give us great opportunities to improve our understanding of the demographic history of many species. The project focuses on trying to disentangle population structure among humans over time. The project will investigate these processes using large-scale population genomic data from modern-day and prehistoric humans. The successful candidate will work in Professor Mattias Jakobsson’s and Maximilian Larena’s research groups. The research program consists of an international team of researchers (senior scientists, post doctoral fellows, graduate students and research engineers) with different areas of expertise. The research focus on population genetics and human evolution using a combination of population genetic models and computational approaches to understand the complex patterns of large-scale human genetic variation and their implications for human demographic and evolutionary history. In particular, the research aims at understanding human evolution using genetic information from both recent and ancient individuals, developing statistical methods for analyzing large genomic data, and searching for genes targeted by selection. Our research is financed by the Swedish Research Council and Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Machine Learning with a focus on probabilistic models in microbial and cellular ecology

All ecological systems, including ecologies of cells, consist of interacting parts. Cell imaging data, which hold rich information about how cells act and interact with each other, can be translated into spatio-temporal point patterns in which points represent cell locations. In this project, the doctoral student will develop mathematical models and machine learning methods that probabilistically infer information about microbial and cellular ecologies from the point patterns that they generate. During the process, the student will learn how to combine mathematical models (based e.g., point processes and differential equations) with machine learning methods (e.g., Hamiltonian Monte Carlo sampling and neural networks) to solve research problems in microbial and cellular ecology. The PhD project will investigate the use of social robots in child wellbeing and mental health applications.

The PhD project is part of the large collaborative project MICRO (Measuring children’s wellbeing and mental health with social robots), recently funded in the CHANSE-NORFACE Enhancing Well-being for the Future call.

The MICRO project aims to advance knowledge on how linguistic abilities and the ability to successfully engage in social interactions affect children’s wellbeing and mental health. To achieve this objective, the project will explore the use of social robots as new tools to measure children’s wellbeing and mental health in a school context. This will be done with a particular focus on vulnerable groups that are potential targets for preventative interventions, such as children with developmental language disorder and refugee children.

The PhD project will focus on (1) Human-robot interaction design for the measurement of child wellbeing and mental health, and (2) Child-robot interaction studies with vulnerable groups.

This is an interdisciplinary project which will be supervised by an interdisciplinary team with expertise in social robotics and human-robot interaction (Ginevra Castellano, main supervisor), child health and welfare (Georgina Warner), and developmental psychology (Gustaf Gredebäck).

Lichens, symbiotic organisms composed of fungi, photobionts (algal partners), and bacteria, play crucial roles in ecosystem functioning, particularly in cold environments, contributing significantly to biogeochemical cycles and trophic interactions. Yet lichens are little understood with many aspects of their biology and evolution still to be discovered.

The PhD candidate will work on the project ‘Evolution and biology of lichen photobionts’, within the group of Ioana Onut Brännström at the Department of Ecology and Genetics. The position is fully funded for four years. This PhD project aims to deepen our understanding of the biology and evolution of lichen photobionts. High-quality genomic resources will be aquired for common photobiont species to investigate their genomic characteristics and phylogenetic relationships. To explore how photobionts are acquired and transmitted, the project will analyze the symbiotic composition of lichens from various geographic zones and climates, using a combination of metabarcoding, metagenomics and population genomics methods.

Throughout the doctoral program, the student will apply a wide range of bioinformatic methods, including phylogenomics and comparative genomics, while also performing photobiont culturing and molecular lab work to generate sequencing data. Parts of the project will involve collaboration with another lichen research group at IEG.

The goals for this project are i) to better understand the impact of plasmid copy number variation on antibiotic resistance, resistance evolution, and horizontal gene transfer, and ii) to investigate the detailed molecular mechanisms of gene copy number variation, with a strong focus on antibiotic-induced variations in plasmid copy number. To reach these goals, the successful candidate will have access to a large collection of genetically well-characterized microorganisms, infection models, cutting-edge tools (including ddPCR, Illumina and Nanopore sequencing), and an interactive and stimulating working environment.

The project is about the mechatronics, and mechanical and electronic design for the wearable and body-near interactive haptics, where orthogonal sensors and actuators enable design for tight perception-action loops. The focus will be on the embedded electronics and sensorics for patches manufactured in collaboration with other researchers in the research group of soft micromechanics, using planar additive manufacturing of printed circuits with digital printing of composites and different dielectrics. In collaboration with colleagues in the project, patches will be developed for exploring different haptic interactions for the internet of senses.

I Sverige uppskattas antalet matförgiftningar vara en halv miljon per år, men mörkertalet är stort. För sårbara grupper kan en matförgiftning bli livshotande, orsaka sjukhusvistelse och dödsfall och det finns ingen given kontrollpunkt som säkrar konsumenters kunskap om livsmedelssäkerhet. Internationell forskning visar att sårbara riskgrupper kan få oenhetlig, ingen eller felaktig information om livsmedelssäkerhet från omvårdnadspersonal. Otillräcklig kunskap om livsmedelssäkerhet minskar möjligheten att överföra korrekt information. Det finns en forskningslucka just när det gäller omvårdnadspersonals kunskap, attityder och beteende i relation till livsmedelssäkerhet. Projektet syftar till att studera förmågan att identifiera och kommunicera livsmedelssäkerhet hos olika professioner vilka ansvarar för livsmedelshantering på olika nivåer inom bland annat kommunala äldreomsorgen. Datainsamlingen kommer att fokusera på riskmedvetenhet, self-efficacy och måluppfyllelse i relation till livsmedelssäkerhet och att kunna förutsäga de faktorer som ligger bakom kunskap om patogener och risklivsmedel, attityder samt livsmedelssäker hantering. Såväl kvantitativa som kvalitativa datainsamlingsmetoder kommer att tillämpas.

Luisa Hugerths forskargrupp önskar rekrytera en kandidat med stort intresse för forskning och som vill doktorera inom betydelsen av den orala mikrobiota för människohälsa och sjukdom. Vi önskar en mycket motiverad kandidat med förmåga att bedriva forskning inom parallella projekt som involverar både analys av ny sekvenseringsmaterial och meta-analyser. Vidare behöver kandidaten ha förmåga att bedriva forskningen självständigt och i samarbete med andra. Doktorandprojektet syftar till att öka förståelse kring de generella ekologiska mönster i den mänskliga orala mikrobiota och applicera denna kunskap på graviditetskomplikationer. De metoder som kommer att användas inkluderar (men är inte begränsade till) bioinformatisk annotering av metagenomisk data, tillämpning av ekologiska och epidemiologiska analyser, samt maskininlärning och andra prediktionsmodeller.
