(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc summary/title: Research Associate
Our research lab and team are situated in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology (LKSIoV) lab spaces surrounded by the expertise of the LKSIoV researchers, which has >100 active researchers across varying disciplines and departments within the University. The environment is highly collaborative in nature and there are many opportunities to interact with other teams through organized programs, research seminars and/or simple lab proximities and common spaces. Our lab’s research programs and projects are cross-disciplinary, with components of molecular virology, biophysics, computational modeling, drug discovery and preclinical testing. The breadth of work opens our research up to many great collaborations both within the Dept MMI/LKSIoV, but with members of other Departments at the University of Alberta as well as other universities.The position’s primary responsibilities will be to provide biophysical expertise and experimental support to research projects focused on the structural and functional understanding of key viral protein-DNA/RNA interactions. The lab’s research focus is on viral hepatitis (hepatitis B, C and D) and influenza viruses. In addition, this individual will be involved maintaining daily operation of Dr. Meier-Stephenson’s basic research laboratory.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow (Junior and Senior) – Immunology
The Nagandran laboratory is looking to fill a position for a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow, having at least two years of experience in a Canadian laboratory. This project involves collaboration with an industry partner to develop small-molecule drugs that can treat and manage adverse immune events in transplant patients. The successful candidate should ideally have demonstrated leadership skills in areas both within and outside of the lab, as well as mentored junior staff. Research expertise in the areas of molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry or physiology is valued, and in particular, experience working with mouse models that can include primary cell culture and surgery. We are looking for a researcher able to both propel their own research project and help manage diverse complementary research efforts from lab team members as well as industrial collaborators.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Carbon Mineralization with Enhanced Metal Recovery
The Research Associate will (1) conduct applied research in carbon mineralization with enhanced metal recovery, write first-author academic research papers and prepare reports for industry stakeholders (70%). They will (2) co-supervise graduate and undergraduate research students (15%), (3) participate in writing competitive grants (5%), and (4) contribute to the management of the Environmental Economic Geology Laboratory (10%). The primary responsibilities relating to (1) are: leading a field-based pilot experiment; conducting field sampling of minerals, rocks and waters; laboratory analysis of field and experimental samples; and geochemical and/or crystallographic modelling. There will be opportunities to travel to Australia and the United Kingdom to work with collaborators. Responsibilities relating to (2) involve co-supervision of master’s and doctoral students in the laboratory group as well as co-supervision of undergraduate research assistants and honours students. This includes supporting publication of student manuscripts as a co-author. For (3), responsibilities include co-authorship on competitive grants and research contracts with industry. Responsibilities relating to (4) involve providing support to the PI for management of laboratory and field safety and for ordering consumables for laboratory research.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position In Computational Psychiatry (Real-World Applications of AI and Machine Learning on Health Data)
The successful applicants will participate and lead research that applies advanced statistical, AI and ML techniques to large populational health data of patients with mental and substance use disorders. Current and potential projects include two main directions: 1) Individualized prediction of mental and substance use disorders and overdoses and associated health and economical outcomes in the population using health, survey and biological data; 2) Implementation of ML models through interactions with multiple stakeholders and people with living and lived experiences.
The successful applicants will have the opportunity of supervised access to several public and government/institution owned datasets, including large (over 4 million people) de-identified health data from Alberta. In this context, there are excellent opportunities for shared mentorship and collaboration with several PIs in psychiatry and computing science, including the Alberta machine intelligence institute (Amii).
The successful applicants will play a leadership role for several research projects in computational psychiatry, develop and participate in preparation of research grant proposals, assist in the supervision and training of other personnel including technologists, graduate students, other lab members and scientific collaborators. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work directly with our partners in Ministries of Alberta Government, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Canadian Mental Health Association Edmonton, as well as international partners.
