Reporting to the Associate Dean and the Managing Director, the research associate works closely with other members of the implementation science group and our physician leads on several projects simultaneously. With experience working in healthcare implementation science, you have a proven ability to effectively engage and collaborate with multidisciplinary stakeholders, and build strong relationships. You’re a self-starter, have an excellent knowledge of qualitative research methods, and have experience using cognitive science approaches like cognitive task analysis and critical decision methods to carry out data collection and analysis. Our research lab and team are situated in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology (LKSIoV) lab spaces surrounded by the expertise of the LKSIoV researchers, which has >100 active researchers across varying disciplines and departments within the University. The environment is highly collaborative in nature and there are many opportunities to interact with other teams through organized programs, research seminars and/or simple lab proximities and common spaces. Our lab’s research programs and projects are cross-disciplinary, with components of molecular virology, biophysics, computational modeling, drug discovery and preclinical testing. The breadth of work opens our research up to many great collaborations both within the Dept MMI/LKSIoV, but with members of other Departments at the University of Alberta as well as other universities.The position’s primary responsibilities will be to provide biophysical expertise and experimental support to research projects focused on the structural and functional understanding of key viral protein-DNA/RNA interactions. The lab’s research focus is on viral hepatitis (hepatitis B, C and D) and influenza viruses. In addition, this individual will be involved maintaining daily operation of Dr. Meier-Stephenson’s basic research laboratory.

The Nagandran laboratory is looking to fill a position for a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow, having at least two years of experience in a Canadian laboratory. This project involves collaboration with an industry partner to develop small-molecule drugs that can treat and manage adverse immune events in transplant patients. The successful candidate should ideally have demonstrated leadership skills in areas both within and outside of the lab, as well as mentored junior staff. Research expertise in the areas of molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry or physiology is valued, and in particular, experience working with mouse models that can include primary cell culture and surgery. We are looking for a researcher able to both propel their own research project and help manage diverse complementary research efforts from lab team members as well as industrial collaborators.

The Research Associate will (1) conduct applied research in carbon mineralization with enhanced metal recovery, write first-author academic research papers and prepare reports for industry stakeholders (70%). They will (2) co-supervise graduate and undergraduate research students (15%), (3) participate in writing competitive grants (5%), and (4) contribute to the management of the Environmental Economic Geology Laboratory (10%). The primary responsibilities relating to (1) are: leading a field-based pilot experiment; conducting field sampling of minerals, rocks and waters; laboratory analysis of field and experimental samples; and geochemical and/or crystallographic modelling. There will be opportunities to travel to Australia and the United Kingdom to work with collaborators. Responsibilities relating to (2) involve co-supervision of master’s and doctoral students in the laboratory group as well as co-supervision of undergraduate research assistants and honours students. This includes supporting publication of student manuscripts as a co-author. For (3), responsibilities include co-authorship on competitive grants and research contracts with industry. Responsibilities relating to (4) involve providing support to the PI for management of laboratory and field safety and for ordering consumables for laboratory research.

The PEERS Lab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Alberta, led by Dr. Wendy Hoglund, is recruiting a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) with interests and expertise in young children’s self-regulation and mental health, and experience with longitudinal data collection and analysis.

The successful candidate will participate fully in research and related scholarly activities including leading research projects on children’s self-regulation, mental health, and relationships with teachers and peers; grant writing; knowledge mobilization activities (e.g., publications, presentations, workshops, community outreach); student mentorship; and teaching.

We are seeking applications for multiple Senior Researcher positions, available immediately for exceptionally motivated Postdoctoral Fellows or PhD students. These positions are for a 1 year term with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a pioneering project applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to the development of RNA vaccines against emerging viral threats such as Influenza, Lassa, and Orthopox viruses. 

Project Overview: This ambitious project utilizes self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) technology, which offers the potential for more potent immune responses at lower doses compared to traditional mRNA vaccines. Our approach focuses on the use of structural RNA bioinformatics to design vaccine candidates and predict the effects of viral mutations, enhancing our ability to respond rapidly to evolving pandemic threats. 

iClassifier, in collaboration with the Optical Diagnostics Group (ODG) at the University of Alberta and MITACS Canada, is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join our R&D team in the area of electronics and signal processing. The successful candidate is expected to start ASAP and will conduct industry-related research in smart agricultural product system design and development. The candidate should have experience in electronic circuit design, data transfer from devices to computer systems, and signal processing. Experience with Embedded system design, image processing and working with Linux servers would be an asset.

Applications are invited for appointment as a Post-doctoral Fellow in the Department of Pediatrics, to commence as soon as possible for one year, with the possibility of renewal. The appointee will have the opportunity to work with both local and national multi-disciplinary teams to enhance the healthcare outcomes of at-risk infants. The appointee will be involved in the research activities related to the Canadian Neonatal Network, Evidence-based Practice Quality Improvement, and other provincial, national and local databases. These studies are currently funded through a CIHR grant and other provincial/ local research funding. We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a collaborative project jointly led by Prof Nidhi Hegde (University of Alberta, Amii) and Prof Dhanya Sridhar (Université de Montréal, MILA) and funded through the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR).

The focus of the project is on strategic classification and causal models. In particular, we aim to study long-term fairness and develop robust learning algorithms in a strategic classification framework.

The appointment will initially be for one year with a salary starting at $40,000 (CAD) per year with annual increase and benefits, one-time airfare, and $2000 per year for professional development. This post is renewable and subject to satisfactory performance. Starting date is negotiable but preferred start dates are between October 2024 to January 2025.

Additional funding is available from the Canadian Tri-Council research grant agencies, and potentially other sources. Successful applicants will utilize their experience in cutting edge techniques working with human islets, organoid and/or vascular culture models, live cell and confocal microscopy and analysis of large datasets. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to innovative research in child development and participation through brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. We seek candidates passionate about the clinical implementation of non-invasive (BCIs) for neurodiverse children and youth. This interdisciplinary patient and family-centered research involves medicine, rehabilitation, and engineering faculties, aiming to enhance participation and development through play, mobility, and communication for people with neurological impairments.

A background in rehabilitation sciences, neuroscience, or developmental psychology is preferred. Successful candidates will have strong communication, collaboration, and coordination skills to work effectively with patients, families, researchers, clinicians, and industry partners and contribute successfully to this intersectoral research.

The successful candidate will work closely with Drs. Xiaoli Fan and Feng Qiu, as well as an interdisciplinary team of experts, on an economic valuation of soil data project funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The successful candidate will be offered an initial contract of 2 years, of which the first 6 months will be a probationary period. Subsequent employment is determined based on the performance, the availability of funds, and the continued need for the position.

The successful applicants will participate and lead research that applies advanced statistical, AI and ML techniques to large populational health data of patients with mental and substance use disorders. Current and potential projects include two main directions: 1) Individualized prediction of mental and substance use disorders and overdoses and associated health and economical outcomes in the population using health, survey and biological data; 2) Implementation of ML models through interactions with multiple stakeholders and people with living and lived experiences.

The successful applicants will have the opportunity of supervised access to several public and government/institution owned datasets, including large (over 4 million people) de-identified health data from Alberta. In this context, there are excellent opportunities for shared mentorship and collaboration with several PIs in psychiatry and computing science, including the Alberta machine intelligence institute (Amii).

The successful applicants will play a leadership role for several research projects in computational psychiatry, develop and participate in preparation of research grant proposals, assist in the supervision and training of other personnel including technologists, graduate students, other lab members and scientific collaborators. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work directly with our partners in Ministries of Alberta Government, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Canadian Mental Health Association Edmonton, as well as international partners. We are looking for a talented, knowledgeable and ambitious candidate to research several interesting medical-informatics tasks related to epidemiology (population disease forecasting) and bio-chemical analysis, as well as foundational topics, especially survival prediction and counterfactual reasoning, towards effectively learning personalized treatment effects. You will be working with the Greiner Lab at the University of Alberta & the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii).

A post-doctoral position is immediately available to study the biogenesis and role of lipid droplets in neurodegenerative diseases, as part of a collaborative project between the laboratories of Dr. Simonetta Sipione and Dr. Richard Lehner, at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.

The Clemente research group invites applications for research associates to perform high-level complex research activities for projects in cardioimmunology. Our main research topics include immune responses in cardioncology, viral and autoimmune myocarditis. We use genetically modified mouse models to uncover the role of immune cells in these settings. The projects will expose the RA to a wide variety of scientific questions and approaches, including exploring changes in immunological responses and understanding mechanistic relationships between the immune system and heart function 

To counter the pollution of fossil fuel powered vehicles in the public transit sector, agencies across the globe have ramped up the purchase of net-zero emission buses, with battery electric buses (BEBs) leading alternatives such as hydrogen fuel-cell buses. This study will comprehensively assess empirical data on the operational performance of BEB fleets in select winter cities.  In this work, the researcher will work with the Principle Investigator to identify challenges, opportunities, and strategies for transit agencies in winter cities to decarbonize their bus fleets.

The selected candidate will contribute significantly to advancing GUV technologies, dedicating 50% of their time to innovative research, including the design and efficacy testing of UVGI systems. A further 20% will involve the mentorship of graduate and intern students, providing both technical guidance and safety protocols under the Principal Investigator’s supervision. The remaining 30% will focus on self-directed research initiatives and the development of funding proposals.

A full-time postdoctoral fellowship position is available in the Elhenawy lab at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada. We are interested in exploring the pathogenesis of Escherichia coli strains associated with inflammatory bowel diseases. This includes studying the metabolism of these bacteria in the host environment. Moreover, we are investigating how these strains use type IV secretion system to form biofilms in the gut. We apply cutting-edge tools such as transposon insertion-sequencing, RNA-sequencing, and microscopy to characterize the role of these bacteria in driving inflammation.

The main role of this position will be to lead the production of Health Evidence Reviews (HERs) at the request of government. It requires proficiency in systematic review (including critical appraisal and meta-analytic techniques) and scoping review methods; basic quantitative techniques; and qualitative approaches to collecting and analysing data. Strong communication skills are needed, since the position must interact with many different stakeholder communities. In addition to this main role, there will be  opportunities to engage in other research related to methods for assessing technologies, services and programs throughout their lifecycle and determining the broader social value of therapies for rare diseases as part of other grants held by members of the Unit.  Therefore, activities in which the research associate will be involved include planning, developing, conducting, implementing and disseminating research in the form of HTAs and other empirical work.
