Your research project must cover the early translational stages T₀ (Disease modelling, Omics studies, Basic Research) -T₁ (Biomarker discovery, Target development, Preclinical development) and should bridge a basic biomedical research environment and a clinical research environment, making the research project interdisciplinary in its nature. The project may also cover early T2 (First in human, phase 1 clinical trials, phase 2 clinical trials, phase 2b clinical trials), but this is not a requirement.

Your project must be at the postdoctoral level, should address a relevant medical challenge and should be ambitious yet feasible within the timeframe of two years. Your research project must be developed in collaboration with your Mentor Team and is an important part of the recruitment process to become a BRIDGE Fellow.

Appointed fellows spend 80% of their time on individual translational research projects mentored by a Mentor Team consisting of a basic biomedical scientist from a SUND Department or Centre, and a clinical scientist from a hospital in the Capital Region of Denmark or Region Zealand and/or from the life science industry. Additional mentors from other departments and universities in Denmark are encouraged if relevant.

Integrated economic and ecological modelling is an increasingly important field of research to disentangle sustainability challenges and support policy development to achieve environmental, social and economic goals. With this opening for 1-3 positions in environmental-economic modelling related to agriculture, we seek to strengthen the Departments capacity in integrated modelling of land use policies and environmentally and economically sustainable agricultural production. Join us and contribute to strengthen and develop our team as a Postdoc in environmental-economic modelling related agri-environmental land use policy, with focus on climate, water quality, biodiversity, recreation and food/forest production. In this position, you will contribute to the further development of existing environmental-economic models and develop new modelling platforms at IFRO. The emphasis of the modelling is to identify possible pathways for effective and economically efficient regulation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact of agriculture. We aim to develop the models further beyond state of the art, allowing for inclusion of new environmental themes at relevant spatial scale, to include linkages between agricultural sectors etc. Development of the models to allow for predictions of the effects of incentives and regulations at the relevant spatial and temporal scales is considered a particularly promising avenue for future research development

The Niels Bohr Institute is strongly involved in the construction of the European Spallation Source; one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of having the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are seeking to appoint a Post doc (Instrument Scientist) at the BIFROST instrument, an extreme environment cold spectrometer. You will join the Spectroscopy Division of ESS.

The position will be time limited to three years at the Niels Bohr Institute. There may be future possibilities for a permanent contract at ESS, in a tenure-track fashion, while maintaining the connection to the Niels Bohr Institute.

The Post doc will work on a project that aims to advance quantum materials growth with unprecedented precision, cleanliness, and purity. Leveraging the latest advancements in quantum optics and atomic manipulation, this project pushes crystal growth processes to new heights. Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) and ultra-high vacuum (UHV) technology will be utilized to fabricate quantum circuits under tightly controlled conditions, bringing atoms into play at the single-atom level for an unprecedented approach to crystal growth.

The Sandelin group is looking to recruit a talented postdoctoral researcher to our highly dynamic research group working in the interface of genomics and computational biology. Nuclear RNA degradation is essential for all cells. Together with transcription, it determines RNA expression levels, which underlies all major cellular transitions in development and disease. Different transcripts have widely differing half-lives, which means nuclear RNA degradation is a key process in gene-specific expression regulation. Therefore, understanding nuclear RNA degradation is necessary to understand the biology of cells.

The postdoctoral position is part of the research project “Urban encroachment – untangling drivers and dynamics of land-use transitions in ecologically sensitive areas” funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The overarching aim of this project is to identify and promote more sustainable trajectories of urban expansion in African cities, allowing cities to accommodate rapidly growing populations, while preserving ecologically sensitive areas, benefiting from ecosystem services and building resilience to climate change. The research will entail a comparative case study of two rapidly growing cities – Accra in Ghana and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania – which are characterized by extensive informal expansion. The objectives of the research are

• to estimate the scale and magnitude of natural areas lost in urban expansion
• to gain insights into the motivations and logics of diverse actors involved in land-use conversions within ecologically sensitive areas
• to develop a comprehensive understanding of how urban governance arrangements shape encroachment dynamics

“The Transformative Impact of High Ambition Commitments” project is funded by the Grundfos Foundation. The project focuses on C40’s Water Safe Cities Accelerator (WCSA), where 17 global cities have committed themselves to ambitious goals to improve urban resilience to water-related risks. Ninety percent of global disasters are accounted for by water-related climate hazards, and cities in low- and middle-income countries are disproportionately affected. These negative impacts will only be exacerbated further by the continuous unfolding of the climate crisis.

Through in-depth case studies in five selected cities, the project will investigate the process of translating WCSA’s high ambition commitments to local policies and on the ground action in different geographical contexts. The case studies will analyze the barriers and opportunities that cities face in the implementation process and how network support from C40 affects cities’ ability to achieve their goals. In parallel, the project will explore the potential of the C40 accelerator model, including its partnership with the Grundfos Foundation, to generate catalytic effects that lead to replication and scaling of action through the development of new coalitions, practices, and investments in signatory cities as well as the broader cohort of C40 cities and beyond. Through the project, we strive to inform and inspire cities globally to raise their ambitions and contribute new knowledge on how transnational networks can facilitate implementation of high ambition commitments and generate catalytic effects on the ground in specific cities. The project is a collaboration with the Queen Mary Center at the University of Copenhagen. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with a new hired project manager who will lead the project’s knowledge co-production approach throughout the research process.

Rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) start having an impact in the Humanities. Are you interested in pursuing a career within metabolomics, microbiome and cardiometabolic health? Are you good at working independently, but also enjoy being part of an ambitious and collaborating team? Then you might be our new postdoc! The position is to be filled by 1 April 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is affiliated to Microbiome Health Initiative (MHI) funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The objectives of MHI are to determine the causal role(s) of the gut microbiome for cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) and to utilize this knowledge to investigate strategies for developing microbiome-based interventions to prevent and/or treat CMDs in humans. The ambitious MHI virtual centre involves top research environments in Denmark and throughout Europe with complementary competencies.

The postdoc will apply state-of-the-art metabolomics on samples from pre-clinical studies and already conducted human studies to identify microbial metabolites that are intrinsically associated with CMD processes and that could be regulated through foods to produce a desired therapeutic effect. The postdoc will seek to understand how these microbial metabolites are regulated and associated with gut microbiome composition, gut environment, diet, and markers of cardiometabolic health.

The vision of ENSAFE is to develop the in silico and experimental methods and tools needed to underpin an efficient evidence-based risk assessment framework for new bio-based plant protection products (PPPs) based on short double stranded RNA (dsRNA) or peptides. The two positions will be filled as PhD students or postdocs working with each their model compound of newly commercialised dsRNA or peptide-based products:

• Position 1: Data analysis and computational tools for siRNA-RNA interactions of the target and off-target organisms will be developed with outset in established and in-house methods such as RIsearch2.
• Position 2: Data analysis and computational tools for small peptide interactions to proteins will be developed with outset in predicting interactions between the peptides and the proteins of the target and off-target organisms. The methodological framework will take outset in a combination of sequence motif detection algorithms and 3D folding with Alphafold for predicting the interactions.

The project will develop a toolbox for the analysis of genomic sequencing data taking into account variance, phylogeny, viral transmission pathways, and generation of viral vaccine candidates. Furthermore, an analysis of host-virus interactions and genome-wide RNA virus structures will be conducted.

Your key tasks as a postdoc at SUND will be to:

• Develop the relevant bioinformatical methods from design to implementation.

• Collect and analyse viral genomic and host-virus transcriptomic data.

• Apply the computational tools within the framework of the national Danish swine and avian influenza surveillance data.

• Explore further possibilities for improving the computational methods and modelling.

• Teach and disseminate your knowledge.

You must participate in the interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment within the Pioneer centre. Here the main duties will be to conduct causal methods research within the area of methods for partial identification, under the supervision of one or more of the pioneer mentor faculty. A small amount of teaching is required, and we encourage the creation of a new course in a topic you find interesting to share with the students in the centre. In addition, the successful applicant is expected to independently, and as a part of the centre, to work on attracting funding for the next stage of their career. Travel between the hubs as part of an interdisciplinary research will be required.

The position is advertised in connection with a newly established research project, “Six-legged cows? Cockroaches unlock the secrets of hydrogenosomes, the culprit of ruminant methane emission” funded by the Villum Foundation. The overall aim of the project is to use a recently developed gut microbiome model, the American cockroach, to describe the modes of action and effects of intervention by diet and defaunation on ciliate and gut microbial contribution to methane emission. Cockroaches offer a unique, fast, and novel in vivo model to experimentally explore fundamental interactions between rumen ciliates, bacteria, and methanogens relevant to methane emission in livestock.

The postdoctoral research will focus on characterizing the role of ciliates and their endosymbiotic archea in methane emission. Tasks will include handling of insects, experimental intervention studies, processing of DNA and characterization of the cockroach gut microbiome, and quantification of methane emission using headspace GC and sensitive environmental sensors. The candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with project partners and perform high-throughput nucleic acid sequencing (Oxford Nanopore and Illumina platforms) and bioinformatic analyses of the resulting data. The successful candidate will be expected to publish results in international peer-reviewed journals and, to some degree, to engage in supervision. There will be an opportunity to get teaching experience at the BSc and MSc level. The post may also include performing other duties, such as applying for external funding.

The postdoctoral fellow will work in the field of organic chemistry, focusing on the functionalization of biomolecules in water or aqueous solvent mixtures. Our goal is to control reactions involving reactive intermediates, such as cations, in a way that enables these reactions to proceed under aqueous conditions. This will be achieved by developing organic catalysts that recognize substrates and ensure selective reactions. A thorough understanding of mechanistic aspects is essential, so the candidate should have a deep knowledge of physical organic chemistry and be an experienced experimentalist. Significant research experience in organic synthesis and biomolecular chemistry is required. Parts of the project will involve the functionalization of biomolecules, and a strong background in carbohydrate and/or peptide chemistry will be advantageous. Experience with organic chemistry in water will be an advantage. Proficiency in communication and teamwork skills, as well as excellent English skills, both written and spoken, are essential.

The postdoc will be part of the project INTERFACED Interfaces for Democratic Participation: Deliberation, Mobilization and Contestation Since the Onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic funded by Horizon Europe and will work alongside co-principal investigator Associate Professor Christina Neumayer. Amidst the rise in protest, democratic and scientific mistrust, as well as growing societal divisions and inequalities heightened by the Covid-19 pandemic, INTERFACED investigates the diverse forms of political participation that have arisen subsequently. Across eight European countries (Austria, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Spain, United Kingdom) and Tunisia, we distinguish participation interfaces between citizens and representative institutions to then investigate their capacity to include citizens within decision-making and governance. Combining large-scale surveys and experiments with computational, ethnographic, textual, and comparative qualitative methods, INTERFACED will produce new and innovative research findings, from which to scaffold policy recommendations to maximize the mobilization and minimize the demobilization of the least engaged and most disadvantaged social groups.

Machine learning algorithms are increasingly being deployed in real-world systems that utilize user data for training or interact directly with individuals—often making decisions that have significant impacts on people’s lives. In this context, ensuring the trustworthiness of these systems, particularly concerning privacy, unlearning, and/or robustness, is important. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to conduct theoretical and/or empirical research on privacy and/or robustness in machine learning.

The Center for Quantum Devices at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, invites applicants for a postdoctoral fellowship focused on developing solid-state quantum technologies for practical quantum education and quantum workforce training. The successful candidate will be an integral part of our newly established advanced quantum training lab and participate in projects that offer opportunities for innovation and career development at the intersection of state-of-art research and education.

Applicants should preferably have a PhD in experimental condensed matter physics or experimental solid-state quantum information science, with experience in nanofabrication processes. A 2-year postdoc position is open in the sensory biology group lead by assoc. prof. Anders Garm at the Marine Biological Section, University of Copenhagen. The postdoc will be part of a Villum Foundation financed project searching for UV-bioluminescence in alciopids, a group of marine annelids. The alciopids have huge camera-type eyes and we recently showed that their high-resolution vision is based on UV-receptors and the project will test the hypothesis that they use this for communication using UV-bioluminescence. We will also seek to characterize the biochemistry behind the UV-production. The project will in parallel search for UV-bioluminescence in deep-sea crustaceans and other invertebrates.  

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to contribute to a groundbreaking project focused on sustainable forestry, wood supply chains, and carbon management. This position will involve developing advanced models to assess and project future forest resources and their sustainable use in the built environment. We are seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to contribute to ongoing projects investigating recovery after spinal cord injury. The position involves working with mouse models of SCI, including contusion injuries at thoracic levels, behavioral assays, pharmacological interventions, and kinematic analysis.

The positions are part of the Power over Platforms project which runs from 2025 to 2027 and is funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The candidates’ research activities will contribute to the project’s empirical studies of how different kinds of actors seek to influence how platform companies govern their products and services.

The aim of the project is to understand how power is exercised over platform companies such as Google, Meta, and their competitors by actors who have neither raw economic nor formal regulatory or legislative means. The focus is on how civil society groups, interest groups, professional associations, and companies from other sectors sometimes actively try to shape how platform companies operate.

Systematically analyzing the actors involved in trying to influence key decisions made by platforms on key issues—content moderation, privacy, and the use of generative AI for political information and speech—across different jurisdictions (inside and outside the EU), and across different platforms (primarily consumer-facing content platforms including Google, Meta, and their smaller competitors such as TikTok and X) the project sets out to identify who seeks to influence platform governance, how, and what the outcomes are across countries and across companies.

If so, this position is for you. We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc for a 2-year position to develop a metabarcoding multiplexing approach to allow parallel surveys of terrestrial vertebrates and insects using airborne eDNA. The Postdoc will be involved in performing field trials and other research activities concerning the use of antibiotics for the treatment of umbilical inflammation in piglets and improving diagnostics and investigating preventive measures for Cryptosporidium spp. in calves and Cystoisospora suis in piglets. Earth Observation (EO) data presents a unique set of exceptional opportunities and challenges for machine learning research. The vast diversity of ecosystems, petabyte-scale data volumes, continuous coverage across multiple spectral bands, and substantial seasonal and diurnal variations pose significant hurdles. Furthermore, the varying spatial and temporal resolutions create complexities that necessitate innovative solutions. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to conduct research on foundation models for accommodating Earth Observation. You will join our small, but growing, team of scientists studying how interactions between microbes affect host health, in an evolutionary medicine framework. We focus on Helicobacter pylori, an ancient inhabitant of the human stomach, with a rapidly declining prevalence. The work will be a continuation of our ongoing projects, using mouse infection experiments and screening of clinical samples.

The successful candidate will join an international and interdisciplinary research group working on various aspects of normal and malignant hematopoietic stem cell biology including associated diseases such as acute myeloid leukemia. The candidate(s) will use advanced CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technologies in primary human and murine hematopoietic stem cells to functionally assess novel regulators of normal and malignant hematopoietic stem cell biology. These regulators were identified by advanced proteomics technologies and their expression patterns are to a large degree governed by non-transcriptional mechanisms. There will be a large degree of freedom for the candidate(s) to shape and drive the research projects forward.

The successful candidate will join the Center for Volatile Interactions, led by Prof. Riikka Rinnan. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic, collaborative, and international research environment. The center staff consists of ecosystem ecologists and microbial ecologists working in terrestrial and aquatic environments as well as ecosystem modelers. The center is housed at the North Campus in Copenhagen, where we have laboratory facilities and state-of-the-art instrumentation for analyses of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), molecular analyses of microbial community structure and activity, as well as incubation and climate chamber facilities. The center staff has collected a range of unique datasets to link VOC production and consumption rates with DNA- and RNA-based data of microbial communities in different environments and habitats as well as data on environmental factors. The center has access to supercomputing resources to process large datasets and to run trait-based microbial models. We also have specialists who work with process-based ecosystem models (see modelling work at Tang’s group)

The postdoc will lead data upscaling and large-scale modeling activities in the center and mainly focus on implementing observation-based VOC emission patterns from different sources into the dynamic vegetation model, LPJ-GUESS and an Earth System Model, EC-Earth. The postdoc will start by integrating the observed emission and uptake patterns of plant and soil VOCs into the LPJ-GUESS. Further, the postdoc will collaborate with microbial traits, freshwater and ocean modelers and experimentalists to integrate these ignored but important VOC sources in the large-scale model. Integration of these novel emission sources and sinks will further lead to the assessment and re-evaluation of the importance of global biogenic VOC emissions on atmospheric composition and the climate. The work will encompass data analysis, model development and model application. The successful candidate will be responsible for lead-writing and co-authoring scientific publications. The candidate will also have the opportunity to supervise BSc and MSc students.

Our new colleague will study the effects of nutrition or specific diets on micronutrient status, body composition and health of children and adolescents from mainly Kenya and Bangladesh. Through collaboration with the international and multidisciplinary project teams, the work will cover study design and planning of studies in Africa and Bangladesh, and a strong focus on analysing data and writing scientific publications. In addition, the postdoc will participate in PhD supervision and teaching. Traveling to the research destinations is required.

Cyanobacterial blooms can be a threat to insect biodiversity and their services by disrupting two fundamental freshwater supporting services: (i) resource provisioning, and (ii) habitat provisioning. First, cyanobacteria can negatively affect freshwater resource provisioning by producing potent toxic compounds for terrestrial organisms in need of freshwater resources, such as pollinators. Second, cyanobacteria can affect habitat provisioning for emerging insects by direct effects from toxins, but also by indirect effects via alterations in food web interactions. This research projet is part of the international project “CyaNoServices”, with collaboration partners from Sweden, Spain and Brazil. “CyaNoServices” aims to increase the security of freshwater supporting services for biodiversity threatened by harmful cyanobacteria beyond the aquatic boundary, with a focus on insect biodiversity and the multiple key ecosystem services that they provide to wildlife and human well-being. This research project will evaluate the multiple mechanisms by which harmful cyanobacterial blooms can affect the emerging insect community via changes in habitat quality.

4 Postdoc positions in Palaeoproteomics at Globe Institute, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen

The Evolutionary Palaeoproteomics research group, led by Associate Professor Enrico Cappellini, is looking for 4 highly competent, motivated, and dynamic Postdocs, with demonstrated experience in different and complementary areas of (palaeo)proteomic research, for four 18-23 month full-time positions starting on the 1 March 2025 or by agreement.

The four positions are funded by the ERC Advanced Grant “BACKWARD – Overcoming the Frontiers of Biomolecular Studies on Human History and Adaptation Using Palaeoproteomics” awarded to Enrico Cappellini. BACKWARD aims to advancing knowledge about the evolution and variation of hominin and other mammalian species that went extinct millions of years ago, by developing new MS-based palaeoproteomic methods to retrieve and sequence proteins from palaeoanthropological and paleontological remains, beyond the limits of ancient DNA preservation.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and outstanding post-doctoral candidate with a strong background in stem cell biology. The candidate will implement cutting-edge high-content screens to direct epithelial differentiation along the enteroendocrine lineage.

Applicants should have a PhD in history of science or a closely related field of study and significant research experience in the history of the physical sciences. The field of specialisation is open but a willingness to engage across traditional subject and disciplinary boundaries and to develop historical resources in collaborative research are welcomed. So too are projects that develop the resources of the Niels Bohr Archive and engage with the work of the Department of Science Education. The postdoc’s duties will include research in history of science with the possibility of some teaching through the Department of Science Education. We are seeking an enthusiastic and outstanding post-doctoral candidate with a strong interest in energy and climate change and EU Law. The ideal candidate must hold a relevant academic degree (in law or in another social science discipline, provided the applicant can also document sufficient knowledge in law), and possess the appropriate theoretical and methodological tools to carry out the research. Crucially, the successful candidate will have the ability to work in a collaborative international environment both independently and as part of the team.

The postdoc will be part the larger research team at CLIMA, which carries out work on climate change and sustainability. The center offers a nurturing, lively and expanding research environment that has developed frameworks that enable researchers to receive feedback on their ongoing work and interact with other researchers in their field.
