Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Two Postdoc Positions in Experimental Quantum Engineering (EQE) Group
Our research group tackles fundamental challenges in quantum science while advancing quantum technologies through experimental platforms based on neutral atoms. By integrating quantum control and quantum optics techniques with neutral cold atoms and their highly-excited Rydberg states, we aim to engineer large-scale quantum many-body systems and pioneer innovative schemes to enhance controllability and connectivity.
We are currently seeking candidates for two postdoctoral positions to work on exciting research projects.
The first project focuses on demonstrating the unique advantages of using dual-type atom arrays for reconfigurable local quantum control, and rapid, non-demolition stabilizer readout. These features not only pave the way for fault-tolerant quantum computation but also opens new opportunities for exploring frontier topics in quantum information dynamics.
The second project is developing a novel approach to establish a deterministic quantum interface between stationary atomic qubits and flying optical photons, without the need for optical cavities. Our goal is to realize reconfigurable quantum optical links across remote atomic qubits in different atom arrays, a crucial step toward modular quantum computation.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position for the Nulling Interferometry Cryogenic Experiment (NICE)
In this project, you will work within the LIFE instrumentation team at ETH Zurich and play a leading role in the Nulling Interferometry Cryogenic Experiment (NICE), a dedicated testbed to demonstrate the measuring principle of the LIFE mission in a lab environment. NICE is the first and only lab experiment of its kind worldwide and is fundamentally important to demonstrate the feasibility of the LIFE mission. The goal of NICE is to show broadband nulling at mid-infrared wavelengths under cryogenic temperatures (15 K) and with flux levels comparable to the astronomical sources that LIFE will detect. Specifically, we seek to obtain a null depth of 10−5 (and stability of 10−8) while maintaining a high system throughput and, consequently, a high level of sensitivity sufficient to detect an Earth twin at 10 pc.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in High Performance Computing (Development of Parallel Numerical Algorithms for Nano-Device Simulation)
QuaTrEx relies on the Non-equilibrium Green’s Function (NEGF) formalism and on scattering self-energies (SSE). Dedicated parallel numerical algorithms have been developed to solve the NEGF equations on multiple CPUs and GPUs, taking advantage of the specific block-tri-diagonal sparsity pattern of the Hamiltonian (H) and Overlap (S) matrices typically encountered in device simulations. The parallelization scheme of QuaTrEx has been optimized to minimize the communication time and volume of data exchanged. Finally, the SSE calculation has been accelerated by grouping small matrix-matrix multiplications together through batching. Significant speed-ups have been obtained by combining these different techniques, with still ample room for improvement.
In particular, the NEGF and SSE methods build upon several computational kernels that are very similar to each other and whose performance can be further enhanced. They involve matrix-matrix multiplications of either “sparse times sparse,” “sparse times dense,” or “dense times sparse” type, with filling densities going from less than 5% up to more than 90%. These computations may be performed on blocks of the H, S, or SSE matrices with sizes in the order of hundreds to thousands or on full-device matrices, whose sizes range from tens of thousands to even millions. In case of small sizes, a single GPU is sufficient, whereas multiple GPUs are needed in large configurations. Preliminary tests revealed that libraries provided by vendors, e.g., cuSPARSE, or by the community, e.g., DBCSR, do not lend themselves optimally to our matrix-matrix multiplications, thus limiting the overall computational efficiency of QuaTrEx.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in reactive machine learning potentials
Machine learning potentials (MLPs) that predict the energy of molecules or materials from their three-dimensional atomic coordinates are increasingly replacing quantum-chemical simulations in high-throughput screening and dynamical simulations. Trained on large amounts of chemical data, such MLPs can serve as “foundation models” that are broadly applicable across chemical and configurational space. While significant progress has been made in developing MLPs for equilibrium structures, they have been less succesful for chemical reactions, for which much less data is available. While efforts are underway for data collection and training of reactive MLPs, another approach is to augment the architecture of the MLPs to better accommodate reactive events. In this project, we will develop and validate such MLPs that borrow elements from classical reactive force fields. These reactive MLPs target a broader generalization performance and will require much less training data. Finally, we will employ the developed MLPs for reaction prediction in important reaction classes.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in THz dynamics of quantum materials
The aim of this project is to investigate ultrafast dynamics of quantum materials, with a focus on the THz frequency range. Our goal is to investigate the dynamical response of the system once it is brought out of equilibrium following excitation by an ultrashort pulse of optical or THz light. The knowledge acquired from this study will enable a better control of the properties of quantum materials and will inform theory developments that seek to model ultrafast material responses.
This project will be based in Prof. Elsa Abreu’s Quantum Material Dynamics group at ETH Zürich, in the Institute for Quantum Electronics.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Gravitational Physics Research Group
In 2015, the LIGO–Virgo collaboration achieved the first detection of high-frequency gravitational radiation, confirming Einstein’s 1916 results, and establishing the existence of binaries of stellar-mass black holes. The next frontier – the observation of a background of very-low-frequency gravitational waves – was reached in 2023 by pulsar-timing- rray programs (NANOGrav and its international counterparts). Continuing pulsar-timing observations will clarify the origin, spectral features, and multipolar structure of the background, and may also reveal the presence of nearby individual sources. In the mid 2030s, the space mission LISA will begin to observe thousands of low-frequency gravitational-wave sources, including ultracompact stellar-remnant binaries in the Milky Way, and the mergers of massive-black-hole binaries across cosmic time. The newly formed Gravitational Physics Research Group at ETH Zurich leads the implementation of the Swiss LISA Data Center (in collaboration with Profs. Giardini and Robertsson’s research groups in the Dept. of Earth and Planetary Science), and participates in the science activities of the NANOGrav pulsar-timing consortium.
