(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Two Postdoctoral Research Positions in Human(e) AI

You will conduct research on Responsible AI within the broader approach of the Human(e) AI Research Priority Area (https://humane-ai.nl/). The research will be embedded in the University of Amsterdam in one of four faculties: Law, Communication Science, Humanities or Science.

The ideal candidates are active in any relevant area that can complement our current strengths within any of the areas in a) AI and Philosophy, b) AI and Law and c) AI and Communication Science, d) AI and Logic.

Within AI and Philosophy, or AI and Logic, we encourage applications from candidates interested in developing advanced computational methods for studying culture and society. We welcome research on surveying and analysing the application of these methods, its limits and ethical issues. We similarly welcome work on the design of new formal tools e.g. in relation to social network analysis, opinion-formation, bias-detection, fairness, trust or research that can bridge methods used in symbolic and sub-symbolic AI.

Within AI and Law, we are particularly interested in work on the emerging European digital framework, including the AI Act, the Digital Services Act, Digital Markets Act or the European Media Freedom Act, and invite critical legal research on the operationalisation of these frameworks, and the extent to which they tackle the growing proliferation of (generative) AI in the broader media sector. The ability to work conceptually and in an interdisciplinary cross-faculty team will be essential.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellowship Position on Geometric Deep Learning for Late-Stage Drug Discovery

Are you interested in machine learning and molecular modeling of drug discovery? The AI for Chemistry group, headed by Associate Professor Bernd Ensing, is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on the development of machine learning methodology for so-called late-stage drug discovery in a collaborative project with the Organic Chemistry group of Dr. Tati Fernández Ibáñez and the Vascular Cell Biology group of Prof. Jaap van Buul. The projected is funded for 18 months by the Molecular and Material Design Technology Hub of the Faculty of Science. Candidates interested in helping with extending the project, for example with research proposal writing, will have a preference.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position on Optical Atomic Clocks

You will work on two projects. You and the QDNL team will design and build a highly reliable optical lattice clock, based on our AQuRA project. With our partners from VSL and VU, we will distribute the frequency reference of this clock through fibre links across the Netherlands and ultimately Europe. In parallel, you and the QDNL team will create continuously operating optical clocks (a superradiant clock and a zero-deadtime, multi-ensemble clock). Such a clock should ultimately be able to average down to a precision of 10^-18 in minutes instead of the hours needed by todays clocks. This benefit will unlock new possibilities from fundamental science to society.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position in Quantum Sensing with Cold Atoms

We are looking for an experienced researcher to aid the development of a transportable inertial quantum sensor with cold atoms. This project included the development of a new experiment at UVA aiming at using advanced quantum control techniques to perform continuous atom interferometry. It also includes a collaboration between the Quantum Gas group at UVA, the University of New Brunswick in Canada, and quantum-tech companies Q-CTRL in Australia and the Quantum Valley Ideas Lab in Canada for the joint development of a transportable gravimeter. You will play a crucial role in developing metrology models for the inertial quantum sensor operation, and for building and assembling hardware components. You will have the opportunity to work for extended periods in Canada and interact directly with leading experts in academia and industry.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position in Catalysis Engineering

The Catalysis Engineering group focuses on developing sustainable chemical processes by combining chemical engineering, chemistry and materials science. We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to work in a project funded by a company.

Plasma-assisted methods can be used to drive chemical reactions to produce fuels, chemicals, for waste treatment, for making nanomaterials etc. It is a growing research area within the broader sustainability research, as plasma reactors can be powered by renewable electricity. The increasing demand for clean water requires new techniques to purify the waste water. This research aims to investigate the feasibility of plasma-assisted methods to purify the waste water to generate clean water and any value-added byproducts together with it.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position Conservation Science

Are you a researcher with a strong background in the (preventive) conservation of paintings? The Chemistry for Conservation and Art team at the Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Science has a vacant postdoctoral position in the PREPARE project. The aim of this position is to monitor the indoor climate in historical buildings and the physical state of paintings in those climates.

Driven by the climate crisis and a desire to save costs, the cultural heritage field is experiencing a push to widen the tolerances for indoor climates for art collections. However, for many materials in paintings we lack reliable data to do so safely. In the PREPARE project, we will study wax-resin lined oil paintings on-site in uncontrolled indoor climates, as these cases are seen as a valuable source of information to investigate the relation between climate conditions and painting stability.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position on the Computational Analysis of Cities and Digital Platforms

We invite applications for a postdoctoral researcher in the “Curating the Digital City” project, which is led by Professor Justus Uitermark. The project examines how cities are reshaped through digital platforms, such as Google Places, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Using Amsterdam as its research site, the project is interested in how rankings and representations on digital platforms change the way that places in the city are made.

The reactivity between the constitution of place and the making of digital hierarchies is central to the project. Through a combination of computational and interpretative methods, the project examines: (1) patterns of uneven visibility by mapping the representations of places across multiple digital platforms; and (2) the strategies of digital curators who represent and change places to improve their position online.

This post-doctoral position focuses on the first aspect and examines how places are represented across different digital platforms, such as Google Places, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Drawing on both quantitative and textual platform data collected through scraping techniques, the subproject will construct a data matrix containing place-level data. The rows in this data matrix are places (restaurants, community centres, museums, and so on); the columns include their representations (metrics, rankings, texts, and images). If successful, this will enable us to comprehensively map uneven visibility—the qualitative and quantitative differences between representations across different platforms—on digital platforms.
