Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL) Biological Systems and Engineering (BSE) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Host Engineering Group, led by Dr. Aindrila Mukhopadhyay, as well as part of the Biofuel and Bioproducts Division at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI). 

JBEI is funded as 1 of 4 Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Research Centers (BRC) and seeks to address key challenges in developing robust and scalable microbial processes to produce biofuels and bioproducts from renewable carbon sources. The Host Engineering Group will examine and understand microbial physiology during expression of heterologous or non-natural biosynthetic pathways. Specifically, this position will be involved in using systems biology methods, functional genomics, and genome scale model-based designs to develop production strains spanning multiple microbial hosts, conditions, carbon sources, and final products.

Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL) Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division (MBIB) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to help us tackle our national challenges in bioenergy, bioremediation, and in disease using synchrotron-based imaging technologies. This work will be centered around an X-ray scattering beamline, “SIBYLS”. Much of the work done by the SIBYLS team starts with Small Angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments.

In this exciting role, you will direct and carry out diagnostic investigations of advanced energy storage systems. You will perform research that will define the fundamental issues affecting rechargeable battery performance. You will study the nature of physico-chemical properties of interfaces, nanostructures, and the mechanism of electrochemical and chemical phenomena that determine the behavior of the electrochemical energy storage systems. Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL) Energy Geosciences Division is seeking an innovative Postdoctoral researcher to investigate soil biogeochemistry and vegetation recovery in Sierra forests impacted by fire under current and future climate warming scenarios. The postdoc will contribute to the design and installation of a cutting-edge soil micro-warming experiment to be deployed right after a fire, and will advance the mechanistic understanding of the impacts of wildfire and soil warming on below ground biogeochemistry and vegetation recovery. The research will focus on carbon and trace-element cycling and organo-mineral associations as well as regrowth of existing vegetation and germination of added tree seeds or survival of planted seedlings. Vegetation recovery will be interpreted in the context of observed changes in soil properties.
