(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD on the History of Philippine Deforestation

We are looking for a PhD researcher who will contribute to reconstructing and explaining long-term patterns of deforestation in the Philippines in the context of a larger research project entitled Tragedy of the Tropics: Colonialism, Commodities and Commons in Southeast Asian Deforestation since 1850, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO).
The project aims to provide a better understanding of the structural conditions that have hindered, and continue to hinder, the transition to more sustainable land and forest use and to assess the factors affecting long-run changes in deforestation rates at the local level. Project members will use GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and digitized colonial topographic and vegetation maps to develop new spatial estimates of forest area in Southeast Asia across different benchmark years since ca. 1850.

Deadline : Mon 31 March 2025

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) as a robust tool for river science

Are you keen on investigating how Holocene rivers functioned and which life they sustained? Are you enthusiastic about exploring new approaches? We are looking for a PhD candidate who will strengthen our team!

Europe’s ambitious new nature restoration law aims to rehabilitate 25,000 kilometers of rivers for conservation by 2030. Centuries of human intervention have profoundly transformed river and stream landscapes, disrupting their natural dynamics. To identify truly ‘natural’ and resilient river systems, we must look to the past—examining the sedimentary record of rivers.

In natural rivers, life plays a far greater role in shaping physical processes compared to human-modified streams, yet our understanding of these interactions remains limited. This project leverages newly developed sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) to provide unprecedented insights into past abiotic-biotic relationships in past rivers and floodplains. Like any new and cutting-edge method, it is crucial to validate it. This is especially important in dynamic environments such as rivers.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Understanding bacterial infections in potato and tomato crops through the integration of metabolic modeling and multiomics data

As a fully funded PhD candidate in the Systems & Synthetic Biology Chair Group within the Horizon EU funded project POMATO (Effective management strategies to tackle C. sepedonicus and R. solanacearum on POtato and toMATO crops) you will work to understand how to safeguard the health of potato and tomato plants.

For this PhD position, you will work towards the identification of keystone microbial species and molecular features from both plant and bacteria that can prevent the progression of infection caused by C. sepedonicus and R. solanacearum by:

  • using modelling tools like Genome Scale Models to understand the potential of Metagenomic assembled genomes and to study microbial co-occurrence and metabolic potential in healthy and infected plants;
  • using network approaches and other statistical and machine learning tools to integrate multi omics data with metabolic modelling results to map key molecular features from both plants and bacteria to identify and define infection signature and to characterized molecular mechanisms that can contribute resistance or be target for treatment.

Deadline : Mon 10 March 2025
