PhD position summary/title: PhD position in the university research focus “Adaptive Brain Circuits during Learning and Development: AdaBD” 100 %
A doctoral position is available as part of the ChildBrainCircuits+ (CBC+) project of the university research priority area (URPP) AdaBD . The project is being carried out under the direction of Prof. S. Brem and Dr. S. Di Pietro in collaboration with Prof. C. Ruff , Prof. N. Raschle , PD M. von Rhein and Prof. A. Rauch at the Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Psychiatric University Hospital Zurich.
The efficient integration and processing of stimuli from different sensory modalities is fundamental for learning and the development of cognition, perception and especially language. Deficits in learning and/or the processing of multisensory information impair children’s development. However, the neurobiological and genetic basis of multisensory learning in the brain and the changes in these learning processes in the brains of children with and without language development disorders during development have hardly been investigated. In a first phase, the CBC project examined children with and without language development disorders between the ages of 5-12 using comprehensive psychometric tests, functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during learning and the processing of multisensory information. As a doctoral student, you are responsible for the second phase of the project. You will collect longitudinal data from the cohort on behavior and (f)MRI and analyze them for your publication-based dissertation.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position 100 %
The PhD student will be based at OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, St. Gallen, and embedded into the doctoral school of the University of Zurich (UZH), Department of Psychology, Clinical Intervention and Global Mental Health.
We are looking for someone with an interest in practice-oriented and applied research to join a project financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF): “Beyond the barriers: A digital screening tool to promote communication and help-seeking for the mental health of men in the primary care setting”.
Significant gender-related disparities for mental health suggest that men often show poorer outcomes and reduced help-seeking of professional support. By uncovering gender-specific biases and barriers to patient help-seeking and communication (e.g., stereotypical concepts and social norms, stigma, mental health literacy), this knowledge can be directly implemented in clinical practice to improve screening procedures for men’s mental health. We therefore aim to develop and evaluate a digital tool for screening the mental health of men in the primary care setting.
