(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Modelling of the Arctic Ocean Circulation
The project will make use of high-resolution climate model simulations performed in the EC-Earth model as well as ocean state estimates, and employ particle-tracking analyses that yield results suitable for comparisons with proxies from marine archives. We will examine Arctic Atlantic Water dynamics through the Holocene (ca. past 12 kyr) and future warming scenarios, and compare to our proxy reconstructions of past oceanographic change.
This postdoctoral position is for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. It is part of a large project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, called THAWING, which explores the critical role that changes in the properties and pathways of Atlantic Water reaching North Greenland play in the near-term stability as well as the long-term evolution of the North Greenland Ice Sheet, its marine cryosphere and sea-ice ecosystems (https://kaw.wallenberg.org/inflode-av-atlantvatten-i-arktis-hotar-gronlands-isar). As such, the project involves collaboration with other postdoctoral scientists, PhD students, and faculty within the Department of Geological Sciences and other scientists in the Bolin Centre for Climate Research at Stockholm University. This initiative provides a unique opportunity for you to engage with a broad multi-disciplinary network and apply a variety of analysis methods to state of the art ocean and climate models to contribute to our understanding of the vulnerability of the Arctic ocean.
Deadline : 15.May.2025

This postdoctoral position is one of several within THAWING and is particularly suited for a scientist with expertise in numerical ice-sheet modelling.
You will work with ice sheet modelling using the ISSM (Ice Sheet and Sea-level System Model, https://issm.jpl.nasa.gov/) and focusing on the northern Greenland Ice Sheet margin and its outlet glaciers, of which some have the last remaining floating tongues along the northern Greenland margin and therefore been the targets of three successful previous expeditions with IB Oden (Petermann 2015; Ryder 2019; GEOEO North of Greenland 2024).
Your key responsibilities are:
- Numerical modelling: Setting up a 3d-framework for the northern Greenland ice sheet margin, including processes and/or parametrizations of grounding line migration, subglacial hydrology and discharge, calving, submarine melt, ice mélange buttressing etc so that as realistic as possible simulations can be performed under a range of climate and ocean scenario forcing.
- Collaborative research: Integrate observational data acquired during the above-mentioned expeditions into the ice sheet modelling framework, including in particular newly acquired subglacial topography in the terminus region of CH Ostenfeld Glacier, and across the grounding zones of Ryder and Petermann glaciers
- Collaborative research: Interact with other ice sheet and ocean and fjord circulation modellers at Stockholm University, withing the geo- and climate sciences but also extending to the Dept. of Mathematics where ice sheet model development is ongoing.
- Dissemination: Publish results in leading scientific journals and present findings at international conferences.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Ocean-Glacier Dynamics
In this role, you will investigate ocean-glacier interactions using theoretical approaches and ocean-circulation modeling. Our research group has gathered unique data from three icebreaker expeditions to North Greenland, which can be integrated into your work. A key research question is how Earth’s rotation and fjord-glacier geometry limit the inflow of warmer Atlantic Water toward glaciers, thereby influencing subsurface melt on marine glaciers.
As part of the project, you will have the opportunity to:
- Explore the interactions between processes near the ocean-glacier interface and the flow constraints imposed by rotation and fjord-glacier geometry; factors ultimately controlling the relationship between marine glacier melt and oceanic conditions on a larger Arctic scale.
- Collaborate with experts in physical oceanography, ice-sheet dynamics, marine geophysics, and paleoceanography.
- Contribute to advancing our understanding of the complex interplay between the ocean and North Greenland’s Ice Sheet, and how this influence both past and future changes in climate and sea level.
