(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral researcher – In silico prediction of plant developmental transitions

In a Sectorplan-funded collaboration between six departments around the Theme ‘Evolution as a process of interactions between scales’, we focus on ‘Predicting transitions’ and hire three postdocs to work on different aspects of evolutionarily interesting transitions (see also other vacancies). Here, we advertise the joint project of the chair groups Plant Physiology and Biosystematics, focused on the prediction of developmental transitions in plants. We aim to elucidate the relationship between gene activity and developmental transitions such as those from heterotrophic to autotrophic growth and vegetative to reproductive growth. These transitions can either be reversible or irreversible, and occur when a certain threshold of gene/protein activity is achieved. In this project, existing transcriptome, genetic and physiological data will be used to generate models that can predict when such a transition takes place, and to get insight into how external factors can influence the timing of this transition.

In addition to this project, the postdoc will also guide the bioinformatics support at the department of Plant Physiology, advising/supporting/assisting researchers with their bioinformatics analyses. The division between the tasks will be 70/30 (project/support).

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: (postdoc) researcher position on improving wildfire awareness using games and play in the SparkleFire project (0,8 FTE)

Fires in the usual fire countries are increasingly burning beyond control, while fires are burning in the ‘wrong’ countries amidst high population density, low awareness and preparedness. Within this context, wildfire education is key. In a prepared society, people understand the value of fire, know that wildfires exist and understand preventive measures to mitigate fire causes, are equipped to minimize fire impacts on residential properties, and are familiar with appropriate actions in the event of a wildfire, such as timely evacuation or sheltering in place. (Serious) games and interactive play represent potent tools for engaging diverse audiences, increasing awareness and fostering a culture of prevention and preparedness across various sectors, from individuals to organizations and school children to professional stakeholders. The newly funded EU project SparkleFire (funded by DG ECHO) aims to explore, design and implement games and play aimed at enhancing awareness of wildfire risk, applicable across Europe.

For this project, we seek an experienced researcher that can contribute to this transdisciplinary, multi-actor consortium formed by researchers, civil society, an NGO and a volunteer organization, connecting temperate and Mediterranean Europe. The Knowledge Hub for Integrated Fire Management of Wageningen University leads this project as well as a scoping inventory on the possibility of adjusting existing (serious) games to fire.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doc Social dimensions of Flood Resilient Deltas

The Postdoc project is about providing insights in the social dimensions of Food Resilient Landscapes (FRL) and Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in the Southwestern Delta of the Netherlands. This PD project is part of the Icon project “Flexible Deltas” of the Delta Climate Center (DCC) in Vlissingen. To arrive at FRL and NbS, people and their communities are crucial; what are their needs, perceptions, which knowledge do they hold, etc. The PD will focus on the discourses related to FRLs, on the social (non-) acceptance and output (il-)legitimacy of FRL versus business as usual, an assessment of social capital of coastal communities and a contribution to the institutional co-design of NbS with stakeholders.

Within Flexible Deltas this PD project gives insight in the social dimensions of FRL. Special objectives of this PD project are (1) to understand the different discourses around FRL and business as usual, assessing the different ways people lived in the delta under different circumstances (2) to understand the social (non-)acceptance and output (il-)legitimacy of FRL versus business as usual and the involvement of stakeholders and local communities in the development of FRL, and (3) to assess the social capital of coastal communities affected by and involved in FRL.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on cross-species translation of gene regulation modules

With a budget of 96 million euros over a period of ten years, CropXR focuses on creating eXtra Resilient (XR), sustainable, and climate-adaptive crops. By combining plant biology, simulation modelling, and artificial intelligence we aim to develop ‘smart breeding and cultivation’ methods. Thus, we try to speed up the breeding of complex resilience traits for several crops in different growing systems. This collaborative effort involves four universities and numerous companies. It encompasses scientific research, data collection and sharing, education, and practical applications in agriculture and plant breeding (learn more about CropXR at cropx.org).

This postdoc position at Wageningen University is part of the “Translator” work package within the core research programme of CropXR. Our goal is to develop computational methods to translate integrated plant models between species, combining machine-learning inferred gene regulation modules with mechanistic plant models. We will develop and demonstrate these methods by translating a model of the response to combined drought and heat stress on seedlings, from a model plant species (Arabidopsis thaliana), where data is abundant, to various crop species such as cauliflower, potato, tomato and lettuce, where data is much sparser.
