12 Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England

The project’s Research Fellow is central to developing and enhancing the research, impact and engagement of this medical humanities project, particularly in relation to public policy. This role requires a passion for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and for accurate and clear communication of knowledge and research that is meaningful and accessible to those outside of academia. The Research Fellow will assist the Principal Investigator, Wellcome Trust Fellow Dr. Elisabeth Yang, in bringing the gap between theory and practice whilst gaining essential skills, experience, and mentoring in pursuing independent research and engaging with both US and UK public policy audiences. You will co-develop a plan for research with the Principal Investigator, involving both independent and collaborative activities

We are seeking a Research Fellow to fulfil a key role in our project to 1) produce new data-driven models of the magnetohydrodynamics of Earth’s core and 2) better understand and predict the south Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), a region of weak magnetic field intensity in the south Atlantic in which spacecraft are exposed to high energy radiation. The SAA is the primary focus of the recent Macau satellite mission MSS-1 whose observations will be integral to the project. You will be based in the deep Earth research group within the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds and work closely with Professors Phil Livermore and Chris Davies (SEE), collaborating with Drs William Brown and Ciaran Beggan at the British Geological Survey (BGS). You will also work with a variety of external project partners: Macau Institute of Space Technology and Application, British Antarctic Survey, and the Technical University of Denmark; and a project stakeholder group including the Met office, the European Space Agency, RiskAware and RAL Space. There will be travel opportunities to work in-person with this network of collaborators, as well as for presenting the research at national and international conferences. This work is part of the NERC-funded project “A new paradigm for the geodynamo: data-driven models of core dynamics that explain and predict Earth’s magnetic shield” between the University of Leeds and BGS.  

This is a short-term position to evaluate a method of engraining microscale riblet-like structures on the surface of aerospace vehicles using laser texturing. Riblets are streamwise grooves on a surface that have been shown to reduce skin friction drag in flows with turbulent boundary layers, with aerospace and marine applications. The small streamwise grooves mimic the denticles of shark skin. 

The role will use your skills in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to develop a computational modelling framework using large eddy simulation (LES). This framework will determine the effect of surface texturing on sub-boundary layer flow structures and skin friction at typical aerospace Reynolds numbers, allowing a detailed understanding of this interaction to be elucidated. You will have a background in CFD and fluid mechanics and experience in modelling turbulent boundary-layer behaviour, as well as being able to demonstrate innovative approaches to solving problems. 

You will work on a UK Natural Environment Research Council funded project: “AMSINK – The End of the Amazon Carbon Sink?”. Within the project you will have responsibility for undertaking statistical analyses of tropical forest dynamics (turnover, productivity, and change metrics) across time and space and for producing high-quality written outputs. 

The Ecology and Global Change research cluster at Leeds conducts world-leading research in tropical ecology and change. The research will be undertaken collaboratively with a team of ecologists from across the tropics, including partners in the RAINFOR network, the PPBio network and other national and regional networks of tropical American forest researchers. AMSINK emphasizes support for long-term ecological monitoring and research with colleagues in South America, the U.K. and worldwide, all supported by the ForestPlots.net data management team based at Leeds. Our overall research goal is to assess the response of South American tropical forests to changing climate conditions. We are looking for a motivated researcher who can help discover how, where and why the dynamics of American tropical forests have changed.

This post-doctoral position aims to generate short and long term predictions of Cholera spread in the context of global climate change. The work will entail developing quantitative prediction models that will be integrated to wider health systems software for the predictions to be directly used for early warning and action. You will be using both time-series and longitudinal Cholera surveillance data along with external data on contributory factors (environmental, demographic, socio-economic) to develop the models.

This is a Wellcome Trust funded project with the world-renowned International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B), but you will be located at the University of Leeds in the UK. This is a fixed term appointment, but with some potential for extension subject to further funding successes.

We are looking to appoint a full-time Grade 7 Research Fellow in Higher Education to work collaboratively on an internally-funded research project, across the University of Leeds. The  post is available to start immediately,  for two years.

You will be part of an interdisciplinary team which has a wide range of technical, research and evaluation experience drawing on a broad range of quantitative, qualitative and statistical methods. You will contribute to the mechanistic understanding of viral life cycles, including those of major human pathogens, such as HIV. The work involves in vitro studies of virus assembly mechanisms, and, in particular, will dissect how viral genomes help to regulate the formation of their protective protein shells (see Ann. Rev. Biophys, (2019) 48, 495-514. This will pave the way to the development of novel, evolutionarily-conserved, anti-viral therapies targeting critical aspects of these mechanisms. Our highly interdisciplinary team uses non-traditional tools and technologies, e.g. asymmetric cryo-electron microscopy; single molecule biophysics and mathematical molecular modelling, alongside more traditional techniques. Training will be offered to appropriate candidates, although prior experience of working with viruses is required. You will work alongside highly experienced Research Fellows and benefit from interactions with a wider interdisciplinary team across the Universities of Leeds and York. 

The University of Leeds invites applications for a 3-year postdoctoral position studying mass loss from ultrashort period planets. These rocky planets orbit extremely close their host star and offer a unique opportunity to probe the interior composition of exoplanets because their surfaces are hot enough for the rocky material to evaporate. 

You will work with Dr Richard Booth on an STFC-funded project investigating the formation of dusty comet-like tails from ultrashort period planets and exploring how these tails can be used to probe planetary interiors.  

You will work on the Blood Cancer UK funded project: Blood cancer Long-term follow-up using Integrated Health Systems data (BLISS). You will be based in the Cancer Division at the Clinical Trials Research Unit within Leeds Institute of Clinical Trials Research (LICTR). The Unit is one of the largest in the UK and conducts national and international randomised and early phase clinical trials in a variety of clinical fields. Our main aim is to develop and support novel and efficient trials to change clinical practice for the better. Our past results and current research have already helped to do this. Our results inform the academic development of this specialised field of clinical research on a national and international level. Particularly, we specialise in the development, optimisation and evaluation of complex interventions, complex phase III trials and efficient phase I/II trials, as well as adaptive designs, seamless phase II/III designs and biomarker driven designs.
