(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Fiber- och polymerteknologi

Our society is facing the critical challenge of identifying environmentally and economically sustainable alternatives to moulded plastic products, not the least for single-use items. This PhD project, primarily funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet), aims to address this issue by exploring the chemical modification of cellulose fibres to develop materials that behave like vitrimers. Vitrimers are materials that remain covalently bonded during use but can be reshaped and recycled by breaking and reforming these bonds under specific conditions—typically breaking at higher temperatures and reforming at lower ones. This property enables reuse and reshaping into new products without compromising material integrity.

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate with a strong background in chemistry. Preferred qualifications include expertise in organic chemistry synthesis, particularly the modification of carbohydrate-based materials and/or other polymeric systems. Experience with the processing of cellulose fibres and polymers is a significant advantage.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student (licentiate) in efficient use of space and climate impact

The starting point of this project is that there is a need to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases. One big source of such emissions is construction of new buildings. A more efficient use of buildings could reduce the need for new build. With the quick development and implementation of digitalisation, new opportunities for efficient use of buildings appear, but there is a large variation in how to implement space use sharing in various types of buildings. In this project, the intention is to look at sports facilities, student housing, mixed use buildings and offices and identify similarities and differences when it comes to sharing challenges. The overarching aim of this project is to explore pros and cons of using digitalization to support a more efficient space use in buildings as a way to support climate mitigation.

The project will be carried out in cooperation with several partners such as Akademiska Hus and Vakansa and KTH Sustainability, Real estate and facility services.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student (licentiate) in calculations of consumtion-based emissions

Statistics on emissions of greenhouse gases from the Swedish consumption are calculated on a regular basis. The method, now implemented by Statistics Sweden, combine data  from the Swedish System for Environmental and Economic Accounts, and an international Environmentally Extended Multi-Regional Input-Output Analysis (MRIO) model. The methods do however have some limitations and the overall aim of this project is to improve data and methods for calculating consumption-based emissions as well as testing the new methods in policy-relevant scenarios. The student will primarily work on methods for calculating future scenarios for emissions of greenhouse gases. Different types of future scenarios will be calculated.

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral students in Human-AI interaction for autonomous vehicles

Autonomous transportation poses a host of human-machine interaction challenges, both from the perspectives of passengers, pedestrians, fleet managers. This doctoral project will unfold in the emerging field of human-AI interaction where there are a host of challenges emerging from the very theoretical foundations of Human-Computer Interaction and AI respectively. The position is funded by the highly successful initiative “StandUp for Energy”, a multi-disciplinary environment where we at Human-Centred Technologies focus on user interfaces for Electric vehicles, which we expect to be fully autonomous in the medium term.

Possible research topics include, but are not limited to: interaction between vulnerable road users and autonomous electric vehicles,  external human-machine interfaces for autonomous vehicles, control tower operator interfaces for fleets of autonomous vehicles, interaction between drivers of non-autonomous vehicles of all types and autonomous vehicles, etc.

(09) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral students in Guided Difussion Models for Reinforcement Learning

Reinforcement Learning (RL) agents tackle sequential decision-making problems by interacting with an environment and refining their behavior through trial and error. These methods have demonstrated remarkable success across various domains, even surpassing human performance. However, a major drawback is their reliance on vast amounts of training data to achieve such results. In domains like video games or recommendation systems, abundant training data is readily available. However, in fields such as finance or healthcare, data collection can be risky, expensive, or even legally restricted. RL algorithms can be broadly categorized into Model-Free and Model-Based approaches. Model-Free RL learns directly from interactions with the real (target) environment, whereas Model-Based RL trains agents using a learned model of the environment. As a result, Model-Based methods are generally more sample-efficient than their Model-Free counterparts. However, these methods are not exempt from challenges, two of the most critical being compounding errors and the Sim2Real gap.

In this thesis, the objective is to address these issues by exploring innovative diffusion models. These models will aim at enhancing both the learning process and the robustness of the learned policy in RL. Specifically, we plan to leverage guiding techniques within these diffusion models to steer the generation of trajectories toward those that are most beneficial for the learning process. By ‘beneficial,’ we refer to two key aspects: (1) fostering policies that are robust to modeling errors and adaptable to unseen environments, and (2) accelerating the learning process, ultimately improving sample efficiency. We will also explore ways to provide analytical guarantees to these methods.
