08 Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Oslo, Norway

The postdoc will develop an independent research project that aligns with the overarching aims of DRESS and we seek candidates who demonstrate strong interdisciplinary and creative thinking skills, with the ability to conceptualize and empirically ground a project that explores the research questions formulated for WP3. The Postdoc will become part of DRESS’ core team which includes PI Ragnhild M. Bø and a PhD. The team benefit from an advisory board of internationally renowned scholars and will also be joined by a research assistant in its final year. The person appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty of Theology and the faculty’s research training. The applicant therefore is much encouraged to engage in activities by the faculty’s research groups, cf. Moreover, as Associate Professor Ragnhild M. Bø holds a position divided between the Faculty of Theology and the Museum of Cultural History, the appointed person will also have access to the museum’s collections and research groups.

Applications are invited for a three-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics, University of Oslo. The position is set to begin on February 1, 2026, although there is some flexibility in the start date.

This position is part of the research project “Numerical Analysis of Stochastic TRANsport” (NASTRAN), funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project’s goal is to develop mathematical and numerical methods for analyzing stochastic transport equations, which are critical for understanding how random fluctuations affect dynamic systems such as turbulence, water waves, and compressible fluid motion. The research will focus on hyperbolic-parabolic partial differential equations, nonlinear wave equations, and compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The appointed fellow will conduct research within one or more of the work packages of NASTRAN, which span various mathematical fields, including partial differential equations, functional analysis, and stochastic analysis

Opioid analgesics are powerful medical tools with the potential to cause terrible side effects. Because their effects are so variable across individuals and contexts, many key debates remain unsettled in the field. Improved understanding of endogenous opioid functions in the healthy human brain is urgently needed.

While it is well known that opioid drugs interfere with the many functions endogenous opioids serve throughout the brain and body, current understanding relies too heavily on extrapolation from rodent studies and non-specific pharmacology in humans. Notably, genetically engineered ‘knockout’ mice that lack the mu-opioid receptor gene (OPRM1) have revealed the opioid-dependence of e.g. pain and stress regulation. Moreover, an OPRM1 genetic dose response was found for reward by comparing knockouts to heterozygous knockdown mice with few mu-opioid receptors. The project centers on a newly discovered human OPRM1 knockout/knockdown model to probe human endogenous opioid function with a precision far exceeding existing antagonist studies in the field.

The project offers opportunities to develop unique competence in behavioral genetics, experimental psychology and psychopharmacology, whilst working in an ambitious yet friendly and collaborative, interdisciplinary environment. The research group comprises affective and social neuroscience, psychology, anesthesiology, and other disciplines and specializes in the study of pain, reward, stress, and addiction. The candidate will participate in study design, data collection, analysis, and publications in close collaboration with other team members and under the guidance of Siri Leknes. A Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) is available in the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas, at the University of Oslo.

The position is associated with the European Research Council-funded Consolidator project ECOART – An Ecological History of Eurasian Art: Natural Resources, Aesthetic Practices, and Early Modern Globalization, which will consist of a team of one Principal Investigator, three doctoral research fellows and two post-doctoral research fellows. The project investigates the artistic use and visual representation of geographical, geological, botanical, zoological, and climatic resources in Eurasia, a space dominated by European and Chinese economic spheres of influence, in an era of early modern globalization from 1500 to 1800. Funding for fieldwork, archival research, conference attendance and publications will be available to all members of the project.
