PhD position summary/title: PhD in Sociology of Authoritarian Law – “Outside the Law” Legal Mobilization in Central Asia

This doctoral project investigates how individuals and communities in Central Asia pursue justice and rights outside formal legal channels and institutions, using informal negotiations and everyday social interactions. It explores “outside the law” legal mobilization, covert resistance strategies, and grassroots justice initiatives that emerge within the constraints of authoritarian legal landscapes. By analyzing these informal and often hidden practices, the project sheds light on how citizens navigate, challenge, and reshape authoritarian rule in their daily lives. The project forms part of the SOCIAL Doctoral Network, funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions under the Horizon Europe framework.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in working environment, with a focus on digitalisation

Mental ill-health among children and young people is increasing in Sweden, leading to a higher workload for psychologists and counsellors working with this group. To meet these challenges, robots, bots and online services are being introduced to facilitate early-stage support for mental ill-health. However, there is limited knowledge about how digitalisation affects workload, professional responsibility and the experience of providing ‘good care’, as well as whether and how psychologists and counsellors integrate digital tools into their daily work. This doctoral project examines how chat, video, e-services and bots affect psychologists’ and counsellors’ working environment, professional identity and ethics.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Physical Chemistry

During the 4 years of this project, the PhD student will use pNIPAM-based microgels as a model system for soft spheres to investigate the interplay between the ordering and resulting macroscopic properties of the suspensions under flow at the inteface between air and water or oil and water, and the compressibility of individual particles. The student will identify microgels that can produce a response to flow comparable to red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets. Starting from these selected soft synthetic particles, more complex microgels will be developed to realize a prototype of synthetic RBCs and platelets.

(09) PhD Positions – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Electrical Engineering to the Department of Electrical and Information Technology

Through the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) we now offer two new doctoral student positions in the area of Cybersecurity and Privacy. WASP is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their
environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems.
More about WASP (wasp-sweden.org).

The primary duties of the doctoral student positions are to perform research and teaching within the Cybersecurity and Privacy area. The research is devoted to the broader area of privacy-preserving communication and computation outsourcing. Communication over the internet is susceptible to surveillance and censorship. Privacy preserving communication techniques (e.g., Tor, Nym, Snowflake) allow users to circumvent such surveillance and censorship. The research scope would include designing, analysing and implementing such systems; additionally, studying different attacks and countermeasures are expected to be part of the research method.

Privacy-preserving computation outsourcing allows users to outsource computation tasks to a cloud server without revealing to the server anything about the user data or even what kind of computations the user is performing. There are different techniques for such privacy-preserving computation outsourcing such as Trusted Execution Environment (e.g., Intel SGX) and Fully Homomorphic Encryption (TFHE, BGV). Furthermore, the specific functions/tasks can be subject to attacks, and identifying attacks and countermeasures is expected to be studied. The research method will be a combination of system studies, design, and experimental research.

Lund University  is a prestigious university in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.

Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with 40,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,300 freestanding courses. The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Lund University is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.

Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.

The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
