PhD position summary/title: PhD Democratising heritage tourism – risk, governance and inclusivity

This project investigates how inclusivity can be strengthened through collaboration between the heritage and tourism sectors, focusing on the co-production of tools and guidelines that support regenerative and inclusive engagement at heritage tourism sites. By connecting key stakeholders, the project fosters shared responsibility for managing cultural resources while balancing social, economic, and environmental sustainability. Using multi-sited ethnographic methods, it identifies everyday narratives and practices of inclusion and exclusion, revealing how visitors, local communities, and practitioners experience heritage spaces. The project also critically engages with the growing securitisation of heritage and tourism, whereby heritage sites are increasingly framed as objects of risk requiring surveillance, control, and protection. While safeguarding heritage from vandalism, conflict, and over-tourism is essential, securitised approaches can unintentionally marginalise certain groups and restrict access. By integrating protection strategies with inclusive governance models, this research project seeks to reconcile heritage security with social justice and participatory tourism development.

This PhD position (DC-8) is embedded in Work Package 4 “democratisation” and is supervised by Dr. Naomi Oosterman, Prof.dr. Stijn Reijnders (both Erasmus University Rotterdam) and Dr. Luc Alofs (University of Aruba). PhD candidates will be seconded at the Monument Fund Aruba (Aruba) and Sámi Museum Gaaltije in Östersund, Sweden.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Democratising heritage tourism – minority representation

This PhD project critically examines how ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities are represented within European heritage tourism, with particular attention to sites shaped by popular culture and media exposure. Film, television, literature, music, games, and digital platforms play a key role in producing tourism imaginaries: shared narratives that define what heritage means, whose histories are made visible, and who is positioned as belonging. These imaginaries are shaped not only by cultural storytelling but also by governance frameworks and risk-management logics that increasingly frame heritage sites as spaces requiring protection and control; acting as spaces of inclusion and exclusion.

The project draws on media studies and critical heritage studies to analyse heritage tourism as a mediated and power-laden field where representation, regulation, and access intersect. Through multi-sited qualitative ethnography at selected media-related and popular-culture heritage sites across Europe and its overseas countries and territories, it examines how minority narratives are framed, contested, or marginalised within interpretative strategies, diversity policies, and everyday site management practices. By foregrounding imaginaries as both cultural and governmental constructs, the project explores how inclusion and exclusion are co-produced through representation, policy, and spatial governance. It seeks to reconcile heritage protection with social justice through participatory and reflexive approaches to heritage management.

This PhD position (DC-9) is embedded in Work Package 4 “democratisation” and is supervised by Prof.dr. Stijn Reijnders, Dr. Naomi Oosterman (both Erasmus University Rotterdam) and Prof.dr. Maria Lexhagen (Mid Sweden University). PhD candidates will be seconded at Cas di Cultura (Aruba) and KORDER (Türkiye).

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PHD position “Generative AI in Education” (0,8 – 1,0 fte)

The PhD researcher will investigate how GenAI can be used to support teachers in providing feedback on students’ reading comprehension during SRL in secondary education. The project adopts a participatory and design-oriented approach, involving close collaboration with secondary school teachers.

The project addresses key challenges in education, integrating reading comprehension, self-regulated learning, and GenAI. Reading comprehension is a fundamental skill for academic success and participation in society, yet many secondary school students struggle to reach the required proficiency levels. Research shows that effective reading comprehension relies heavily on students’ self-regulated learning skills, including monitoring and evaluating one’s own understanding. High-quality, timely feedback is crucial for fostering these skills. However, providing personalised feedback is demanding and time-consuming, creating challenges for teachers in everyday classroom practice.

GenAI offers promising opportunities to support feedback processes at scale, but its educational use also raises concerns related to accuracy, trustworthiness, and the risk of superficial learning. Moreover, teachers often lack training in how to effectively integrate GenAI into pedagogical practices. Therefore, a key challenge is to understand how secondary school teachers, students, and GenAI can collaboratively engage in the feedback processes that support SRL during reading comprehension, while ensuring responsible and pedagogically sound use of GenAI. The concept of co-regulation of learning provides a valuable framework for examining these interactions and clarifying the roles of the different actors involved.

Our PhD program seeks to train and guide the next generation of academics in the areas of strategic management and entrepreneurship, who address societally relevant questions with original research that meets the highest methodological standards. Through courses, research seminars, applied and theoretical research with faculty, and coaching from the supervisory team, our PhD students gain the requisite experience to do high-quality research independently. PhD students define and execute their own research projects. They do this with the support of their supervisory team, but also work with other faculty, including those at other departments and other universities.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position “Transforming Academia”

As societies face intensifying challenges such as climate change, social inequality and political polarisation, expectations towards academia are shifting. Transdisciplinary, participatory and action-oriented forms of research aim to produce knowledge that is socially relevant, inclusive and actionable. While these approaches promise to strengthen science–society relations, they often clash with established academic norms, funding structures, ethical frameworks and evaluation criteria.

This NWO research project investigates how such tensions and contestations shape an academia in transition. Drawing on sustainability transitions research, institutional theory and critical social science and humanities scholarship, the project studies how and to which extent transdisciplinary, participatory and action-oriented forms of research become transformative by challenging dominant ideas of what counts as “good” research. It examines the changes necessary in academic institutions, the emerging innovations, especially in funding, ethics governance and researcher roles, and the contestations arising through these changes. The project contributes both theoretical insight and empirically grounded understandings. In an Academia-in-Transition Lab, practice partners and the research team will experiment with new solutions and co-develop pathways of how academic systems can better support just sustainability transitions.
