The primary purpose of the Postdoctoral Associate position is to lead research investigations in the malignant transformation of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)-associated nerve sheath tumors, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. The Postdoctoral Associate will design, conduct, and execute research experiments and draft written reports to be included in peer-reviewed manuscripts. This position is responsible for participating in the planning, development, and implementation of laboratory and research studies as assigned and approved by the Principal Investigator. In addition, the Postdoctoral Associate will contribute to the Principal Investigator’s grant proposals and write grant proposals on her/his own to acquire funding.

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Postdoctoral Associate will be responsible for the design, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of experiments regarding the study of the pathophysiology of epilepsy or seizure disorders using murine models and human patients. The Postdoctoral Associate will perform small animal surgeries, molecular, cellular and electrophysiological experiments with the goal of developing a wearable device to prevent seizure-induced respiratory disruption.. In addition, this position will be overseeing the research work of residents, junior research assistants, graduate students and student workers in the laboratory. The Postdoctoral Associate will assist with scientific operations of the laboratory; and submit grant applications to obtain independent research funding.

Under the direction of the PI, the Postdoctoral Associate will study the impact of RNA oxidation and ribosomal dysfunction on dopamine neuron vulnerability in Parkinson´s disease (PD). The individual will also contribute his/her time towards writing manuscripts and review articles that directly result from his/her research. In addition, the individual will also help train graduate students and technicians, and help maintain various equipment. The individual will perform brain perfusions, cryosectioning, immunocytochemistry/immunohistochemistry, advanced staining (antibodies, RNAscope, proximity ligation assays) and high-resolution imaging approaches and quantifications from both mouse and human brains; mouse brain regional dissections; western blotting; and experiments in various in vitro culture systems.

The Mickolajczyk laboratory is recruiting Postdoctoral Associates to engage in ongoing research projects relative to studying the mechanisms of pre-ribosome maturation by motor proteins and regulation and substrate-targeting by ATPase enzymes in ribosome biogenesis. The main project involves studying the mechanisms of pre-ribosome maturation by motor proteins, an essential process for generating new ribosomes that are properly folded and competent for protein translation. Force spectroscopy (optical and magnetic tweezers), single-molecule fluorescence, and bulk biochemical methods will be used to investigate how these motor proteins convert the energy from ATP hydrolysis into mechanical work in order to promote pre-ribosomal folding. The assays developed will be used to benchmark wildtype versus disease-derived mutants of motor proteins to investigate the molecular bases of ribosomopathies and other ribosome-dependent diseases. The Post Doctoral Associate will also have the opportunity to participate in ongoing collaborative projects, as well as to spearhead new projects within the lab.
