Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational Bioengineering
This is an exciting position where applicants are invited to join a multi-disciplinary team of bioengineers, biomedical scientists, and computer scientists working together at Queen Mary across the Centre for Bioengineering, Blizard Institute, and Barts Cancer Institute.
The project will investigate the mechanisms through which breast cancer invades and colonises bone tissue using in silico models to replicate disease. We are particularly interested in the effects of exercise on the development of bone lesions, and the potential role played by mechanosensitive osteocyte cells in this condition. You will evaluate their interactions by building in silico models to establish the relationship between mechanical loading, cell imaging, in vivo micro-CT, and spatial transcriptomics, identifying the key mechanisms governing this process.

pplications are invited for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Cardiovascular Mechanobiology (in vivo)
Cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of mortality worldwide, yet there is still a lack of effective treatments. Recent research increasingly emphasised that changes to mechanical sensing, signalling and memory, critically influences the disease onset and progression. The Iskratsch Group, at the School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary University of London is exploiting cutting-edge mechanobiological, as well as imaging approaches2-5 with the aim to investigate the role of mechanical sensing and memory in cardiovascular disease. The postholder will especially investigate vascular smooth muscle cell mechanosensing and phenotypic switching, following up on previous work of the Iskratsch Group2-5, showing a role for pressure sensing and extracellular matrix stiffness. This will involve the use of animal models for hypertension and arterial remodelling, as well as in vivo and ex vivo charcterisation of mechanosensing pathways.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Plasma-Assisted Combustion Modelling
A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available for 24 months within the School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London to work on a Leverhulme Trust-funded project on Plasma-Assisted Combustion (PAC) Modelling of Ammonia, in collaboration with the York Plasma Institute. The successful candidate will develop and apply advanced computational modelling approaches to simulate plasma-assisted combustion systems. This includes developing and validating detailed phenomenological PAC models, implementing coupled plasma–combustion chemical kinetics, and performing CFD and Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of laminar and turbulent configurations. The role will also involve analysing radical formation, flame stability, and emissions under plasma-assisted conditions.

Applications are invited for a 30 month Postdoctoral Research Associate to join DigiWeB (Digital Welfare Borders), a European Research Council funded, multicountry project examining how artificial intelligence is transforming welfare governance and migration management across Europe. The study spans the UK, the Netherlands and Sweden and investigates how automated decision-making systems shape the experiences of migrants and the practices of welfare bureaucracies.
The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Sociology, Politics and International Relations at Queen Mary University of London and will work under the supervision of Professor Rachel Humphris. They will lead in-depth ethnographic fieldwork in Sweden, undertaking interviews and participant observation to trace how welfare algorithms operate in practice. They will also contribute to comparative analysis across case study countries, support interdisciplinary collaboration, engage with external stakeholders, and play a central role in producing key research outputs.

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL, or informally QM) is a public research university in London, England, and a member institution of the federal University of London. It dates back to the foundation of London Hospital Medical College in 1785. Queen Mary College, named after Mary of Teck, was admitted to the University of London in 1915 and in 1989 merged with Westfield College to form Queen Mary and Westfield College. In 1995 Queen Mary and Westfield College merged with St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College and the London Hospital Medical College to form the School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Queen Mary has five campuses across East and Central London in Mile End, Whitechapel, Charterhouse Square, Lincoln’s Inn Fields and West Smithfield, as well as an international presence in China, France, Greece and Malta. The Mile End campus is the largest self-contained campus of any London-based Russell Group university. In 2018/19 the university had around 26,000 students. Queen Mary is organised into three faculties – the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Science and Engineering and Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Queen Mary has produced many notable alumni in various fields of work and study around the world with several alumni having become notable leaders in their respective fields including politics, as heads of state, science, academia, law, history, business, technology, and diplomacy. There are nine Nobel Laureates amongst Queen Mary’s alumni, current and former staff. Notable alumni include Ronald Ross, who discovered the origin and cure for malaria, Davidson Nicol, who discovered the breakdown of insulin in the human body, British politician Peter Hain, and Professor Andrew Pollard the chief investigator of the Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
