(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Post-doc in Simulations of Thin Film Growth

You will work on applied research and fundamental projects funded by InnoSuisse and the Swiss National Science Foundation on simulations of precursor transport, heat distribution, the nucleation, and growth of thin films in atomic layer deposition (ALD) reactors. The range of simulations focuses on finite element methods and can include Monte Carlo based simulation approaches and continuum modelling. Verification of simulation results against experimental findings will be part of your activities. You are expected to publish your research output in high-level peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Postdoc summary/title: PostDoc/Scientist on bitumen chemomechanics

You will work on projects related to the future of sustainable asphalt pavements, including binder aging reduction, development of alternative binders, developing bitumen emulsions, and working on binder recycling. In addition to the technical work, you will be required to manage research projects, adhere to project plans, collaborate with research partners, engage with stakeholders, and report to the project funding agencies. (03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in CO2 electrocatalysis under realistic conditions

The research project focuses on understanding the electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 into sustainable products. Your task will include:
  •  Assemble and validate modular electrocatalytic reactors and analysis methods for realistic CO2 electrocatalysis, with a focus on parallel investigations and accelerated aging.
  • Dissect degradation processes of CO2 electroreduction catalyst, electrodes, and ionomer membranes under diverse real-world operating conditions, using operando electrochemical and spectroscopic methods.
  • Lead synchrotron campaigns aiming at unveiling the degradation mechanism of catalysts, electrodes, and ionomer membranes with high time resolution, operando x-ray measurements.
  • Develop electrode architecture and catalyst/electrode modification strategies for enhanced durability, using different fabrication methods.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher on CO2 Solid Adsorbent Shaping and Degradation

The project builds on Empa’s expertise in the field of sorbents and carbon capture. The position is part of the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) “Separations”, a collaborative project lead by EPFL (Prof. Wendy Queen) and further involving ETH Zurich, University of Fribourg, HES-SO, Northwestern University (USA) and University of Alberta (Canada).

The NCCR focuses on three key challenges:
  • CO2 capture from air: Developing scalable, cost-effective processes to efficiently remove atmospheric CO2.
  • High-temperature ammonia separation: Creating novel high temperature separation technologies to make ammonia synthesis significantly more energy-efficient.
  • Recovery of critical metals: Developing processes to recover valuable metals such as lithium and cobalt from waste streams, enabling secure and sustainable material cycles.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on analytics of lithium-ion batteries

  • Development of a measurement cell for the online detection of transition metal ions, fluorides, and hydrofluoric acid in the electrolyte of lithium-ion batteries, as well as investigating the potential adsorption behavior of transition metals on the negative electrode 
  • Development of an online measurement approach integrating ICP MS, ion selective electrode sensing, and ion chromatography to analyze the release of transition metal ions from the cathode into the electrolyte, as well as the formation of fluoride and hydrofluoric acid species during battery operation
  • Coupling of the individual online measurement techniques and development of an appropriate control procedure 
  • Maintenance of processing and characterization equipment related to battery research 
  • Close collaboration with a team of chemists, materials scientists, and analytical experts 
  • Integration of functionalized separators developed by project partners into full cells
  • Support in supervising students (PhD, master’s, bachelor’s, interns, etc.)
  • Support for internal and external researchers (equipment, processes, expertise, etc.) 
  • Writing scientific publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Presenting at national and international conferences 
  • Contributing to project deliverables, milestones, and reports
  • Contributing to future projects
