(01)Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc position on Biomedical Optics
Due to ageing, the impact of vision threatening diseases such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) on the health care system will only increase.
In this project we will develop techniques to quantitatively assess the oxygen saturation status of the retinal microvasculature. Reduced blood oxygen levels may lead to hypoxia, which is one of the key drivers of the formation of new blood vessels. These new blood vessels are often leaky, which leads to complications such as vision loss and, ultimately, to blindness. The development of techniques to detect the onset of retinal hypoxia will thus allow timely therapeutic interventions that will prevent vision loss.
In this project, in which VU, TNO and Heidelberg Engineering collaborate, we will develop a multi-color scanning laser ophthalmoscope (mcSLO)-based oximeter with retro-illumination capabilities. The retro-mode mcSLO will be a versatile research tool that provides freedom in the selection of imaging wavelengths and allows different implementations of light delivery and collection to and from the retina. We will develop novel image analysis algorithms for retro-mode imaging to quantify the wavelength-dependent scattering and absorption properties of the retina, from which the microvascular oxygen saturation can be calculated. The image analysis algorithms will be partly based on Monte Carlo simulations of light transport in the retina. The performance of the system and algorithms will be validated on model eyes with controlled scattering and absorption properties.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position in Human Neuroscience: Neurons and Circuits of Human Cognition
While we know that human cognition is unparalleled, we lack a mechanistic understanding of the specific neurons and circuits that support it. This PhD project, funded by European Research Consolidator grant focuses on the function of the specialized neuron types in the human cortex that are vulnerable in Alzheimer disease – layer 3 Pyramidal Neurons and Double Bouquet Cells (DBCs). Our previous work shows that human layer 3 Pyramidal Neurons have distinct physiological and morphological properties that distinguish them from other species and link to cognitive scores. These neurons might play a role of a hub in cognitive networks integrating information from thousands of synaptic inputs. To keep this excitation in balance it must be matched by inhibition. Another human specialized interneuron type – Double Bouquet cell – might provide this inhibitory balance. These neuron types are likely to be critical for human cognition as they are selectively lost in cognitive disorders. In this project you will investigate how these neurons function and form circuits in the human brain, and how their activity translates to more efficient computation.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Organizational Change and Climate Adaptation
In this postdoc position, you investigate how climate adaptation strategies are translated into organizational practice within critical infrastructure operators. Infrastructure organizations face a fundamental challenge: the long-term, systemic nature of climate adaptation sits uneasily with existing cognitive frames, project-based management cultures, and competing organizational transitions like digitalization and the energy transition. Your research will uncover how adaptation professionals navigate this tension — and what strategies actually work.
You will be embedded in the TASICI project (Transformative Adaptation Strategies for Interdependent Critical Infrastructure), an NWO-funded interdisciplinary consortium that develops analytical models and governance frameworks for climate adaptation across interconnected Dutch transport infrastructure. You will work closely with infrastructure operators including Schiphol Airport, ProRail, Rijkswaterstaat, and Vervoerregio Amsterdam, spending significant time embedded within these organizations.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 3 postdocs: FAIR research infrastructures for the social sciences and humanities
The User-Centric Data Science group (UCDS) has three open positions for a postdoctoral (PD) researcher in the field of FAIR Linked Data for the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). You will work within the context of two national interdisciplinary research projects, SSHOC-NL and Macroscope. Both are consortia focused on research infrastructures aimed at creating an ecosystem of services, data and tools for the social sciences and humanities. Together with dr. Ronald Siebes and prof. dr. Jacco van Ossenbruggen you will design and develop tools and infrastructure to make research data, workflows and tools findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR). More specifically, you will work on topics such as infrastructure of interoperable vocabularies for SSH research data, entity linking across datasets, interoperability in dataset annotation and responsible use of GenAI for dataset enrichment and search. An important part of the position is co-design of research and co-creation of knowledge with a wide variety of societal and research partners from various disciplines. An inter- or multidisciplinary background and good communication skills are therefore important assets.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc on Reconciling Food Systems Sustainability and Biodiversity Conservation
The postdoctoral researcher will work within the international research project emBrace, funded under the Biodiversa+ programme. The position is embedded in the integration work package of the project and plays a central role in analytically, conceptually, and operationally connecting the empirical work in the project. You will combine land‑use modelling, conceptual and historical analysis, and cross‑work‑package synthesis with support to project coordination and management.
