PhD position summary/title: PhD position Social Psychology
Do you want to contribute to groundbreaking research that pushes the boundaries of science? We are a new interdisciplinary research team for the ERC-funded Synergy Grant project CrowdING. How do crowds suddenly start to queue, form lanes, or huddle together—and what makes them switch from one behaviour to another? A team of social psychologists, physicists and computer scientists from the Netherlands and Germany seek to answer that question. The research is supported by large-scale laboratory experiments with numerous test subjects, modern analysis methods, and powerful simulations of crowd behaviour. The project also includes qualitative research, together with mime artists and dancers of theatre company Schweigman&, to study the embodied crowd experience and its effects on movement. The project is a collaboration of the University of Groningen’s department of Social Psychology (see Social Psychology @ RUG) and Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Institute for Advanced Simulation-7 (see IAS-7). There is an opportunity to join this new team as a PhD candidate.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student Molecular Pharmacology
Asthma is a chronic disease affecting millions of people worldwide that leads to chronic symptoms such as cough, chest tightness and airway hyperresponsiveness. Type 2 airway inflammation plays a major role in the disease, interacting with structural cells to drive the development of symptoms. On the longer term and in patients with severe asthma, chronic airway inflammation will also drive remodelling of the airways. Amongst other changes, this is characterized by structural changes in the airway wall including epithelial cell changes such as Goblet cell hyperplasia and the occurrence of Hillock cells and expansion of the sensory neuronal network.
The aim of this project will be to study interactions between type 2 inflammation, epithelial cells and sensory neurons to understand how neuroimmune interactions and neuroepithelial interactions drive pathological remodeling of the asthmatic airway wall. The project is a collaboration with investigators of the UMCG and of Erasmus University Medical Center.
The PhD candidate will work with advanced human disease models for airway epithelial cells and airway neurons, based on pluripotent stem cell technology. Cells will be cultured together with cytokines and cells relevant to type 2 inflammation to understand the impact of the asthmatic microenvironment on the growth and differentiation of these cells. We will use organ-on-chip systems to grow the airway neurons and to guide axonal contact specifically to target cells.

We offer a four-year scholarship for the completion of a PhD dissertation. PhD position summary/title: PhD position Multi-scale modelling of precipitate strengthening
For the National Growth Fund (NGF) project “Groeien met Groen Staal” (GGS), a PhD position for the period of 4 years is available in the context of modelling green steel mechanics from the atomic scale. In this project, the University of Groningen will investigate micro-scale and atomic-scale processes of dislocation-precipitate interactions for multi-component alloy systems that are relevant for the new green steels compositions, where precipitates can occur due to impurities and tramp elements. The goal of the project is to devise a multi-scale framework where atomic-scale mechanisms of precipitate shearing/looping are incorporated into micro-scale framework of dislocation-precipitate interactions. This model will enable to predict precipitate strengthening as a function of the green steel composition.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Bioelectronics for Precision Therapies
We are looking for a motivated student to fill a fully funded PhD position at the University of Groningen. The aim of this PhD project is to develop novel therapies for healthcare through the engineering of smart bioelectronic devices. Although interfacing electronics with biological systems has shown great promise for a wide variety of disorders, personalized therapies that adapt in real-time have not been established yet. The development of soft and flexible bioelectronic devices that use feedback of integrated biosensors and high-density microelectrode arrays will enable precision therapy to improve healthcare.

PhD position summary/title: PhD-student Netwerk-geïnformeerde behandeling bij complexe psychopathologie
Hoe kan de psychologische behandeling van complexe psychopathologie worden verbeterd? Dit PhD-project maakt deel uit van het multicenter onderzoeksconsortium New Science of Mental Disorders (NSMD) dat zich richt op de netwerk benadering van psychopathologie. Centraal doel van het huidige project is om te onderzoeken of de effectiviteit van reguliere psychotherapeutische behandeling van personen die voldoen aan meerdere diagnoses kan worden vergroot door de interventies af te stemmen op causale symptoom-netwerken die zijn gebaseerd op dagboek/EMA-gegevens van de individuele patiënten. Om de effectiviteit in kaart te brengen richt het project zich daarbij niet alleen op de afname van klachten maar ook op de toename van mentaal welbevinden. Daarnaast beoogt het project in kaart te brengen welke factoren kritisch zijn voor het onmiddellijke effect van de behandeling en voor het bereiken van meer duurzaam herstel van de mentale gezondheid met daarbij specifieke aandacht voor de rol van ervaren betekenis in het leven. Om een meer genuanceerd beeld te kunnen vormen van de factoren die betrokken zijn bij het ontstaan, het instandhouden en het weer (duurzaam) herstellen van mentale klachten maakt het project ook gebruik van causale netwerk-analyses op basis van reeds beschikbare gegevens van de Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA). Voor het patiënt-gebonden onderdeel van dit project zal worden samengewerkt met het Traumacentrum van GGZ-Drenthe en met Psychiatrie Noord.
