The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work directly with Dr. Luciana Mascarenhas Fonseca, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Rutgers University. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of cognitive aging and dementia, with a particular focus on individuals with Down syndrome and other populations at elevated risk for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ongoing and developing studies examining longitudinal cognitive trajectories and the mechanisms underlying dementia risk and progression. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with Dr. Fonseca and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of neuropsychologists, neurologists, and cognitive neuroscientists within the Herbert and Jacqueline Krieger Alzheimer’s Research Center.
Applicants should be highly motivated to work in aging and dementia research and have experience working with human subjects. The Altindis Lab studies viral insulin/IGF‑1‑like peptides (VILPs) – sequences encoded by viruses that mimic human insulin and IGF‑1. We investigate how VILPs interact with and inhibit the human IGF‑1 receptor (IGF1R) with high specificity, without affecting the insulin receptor. Using structural biology (cryoEM), proximity labeling (TurboID), phosphoproteomics, and mouse models (including bGHTg acromegaly mice and breast cancer xenografts), we aim to uncover fundamental mechanisms of IGF1R antagonism and develop peptide‑based inhibitors for diseases such as cancer and diabetic complications.

The Nakamura lab in Department of Genetics at Rutgers university has two postdoctoral positions available.
