Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in machine learning with a focus on reinforcement learning and model predictive control

This project focuses on developing, analyzing, and applying new methods in reinforcement learning and model predictive control (MPC), both stochastic and deterministic formulations. the focus will be on developing methods for robust reinforcement learning and/or MPC formulations. We are particularly interested in settings where the cost or reward function is non-ergodic. (17) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in Materials Physics

The Postdoctoral researcher will be affiliated with the Division of Material Physics and be part of a group working with neutron scattering methods. Employment will be in Uppsala with extended stays at the ISIS Neutron and Muon source near Oxford (UK) and the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund (Sweden). ISIS and ESS together represent the forefront of neutron science, combining decades of operational excellence with next-generation source and instrument development. ISIS is a globally leading multi-disciplinary facility where curiosity-driven research meets application-led science and engineering, while ESS—currently preparing for operation and instrument finalisation—will be the world’s most powerful neutron source, built as a partnership of 13 European member countries. The position offers a unique opportunity to work in highly collaborative, international environments alongside world-leading scientists, engineers, and technicians, contributing from an early stage to cutting-edge instrumentation and scientific discovery with broad societal, technological, and scientific impact.

The Postdoctoral researcher will utilize Spin–Echo Modulated Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SEMSANS) to extend accessible length scales beyond that of the conventional SANS and to obtain spatially resolved scattering signals by dark-field imaging. SEMSANS uses polarised neutrons to encode small scattering angles without the need for a highly collimated neutron beam and measures the autocorrelation function over mesoscopic length scales, probing structural features from the micrometer range down to the nanometer regime. The method relies on spatial modulation of the neutron beam’s polarisation using a pair of magnetic Wollaston prisms – superconducting triangular field regions – placed upstream of the sample. The Postdoctoral researcher will work on the design and implementation of the Wollaston prisms and a spin exchange optically pumped (SEOP) neutron spin analyser, both will be developed on a test beamline at ISIS. Once implemented, the new capabilities will be exploited on the already operating instruments Larmor and IMAT at ISIS. When ESS becomes operational with its novel long neutron pulse, the setup will be integrated and used on the dedicated imaging instrument ODIN and the SANS instrument SKADI. This will enable unique studies on mapping flux lattices in intermediate mixed-state superconductors, characterizing vesicles in model cell systems, and resolving hierarchical cellulose microstructures in collaboration with the project partners.

(19) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher position in molecular vertebrate paleontology

Great progress is being made in the fields of molecular archaeology and palaeontology, with increasing evidence that labile biomolecules can be preserved in increasingly older fossil material. The mechanisms underlying such preservation, and the conditions that enable it, however, remain complex and poorly understood. Fossil samples from extensive field work in Skåne by Martin Qvarnström and Grzegorz Niedźwiedzki have been pre-selected based on extensive prior taphonomic studies. This project will investigate palaeontological material that has been shown to contain exceptionally well-preserved tissues at sub-cellular resolution, including soft-tissue-like structures of currently unresolved composition, which this project aims to characterize. In your role as a researcher, you will synthesize this work and work together with the research group and collaborators to develop protocols for sampling and demineralisation of fossil bones under clean conditions in specialized laboratories. You will apply methods to extract and concentrate soft tissue material under strict contamination controls, with a primary focus on proteins, and prepare samples for imaging and peptide sequencing, and interpret the results. DNA sequencing will be performed to identify recent environmental signals to be cross-referenced with the peptide data. The resulting data will be compared against reference databases and environmental controls to assess contamination, identify environmental signatures, and characterise endogenous vertebrate palaeobiomolecules, which in combination with microcopy and geochemical protocols be used to cast new light on the biology of early dinosaurs (and other sampled fossil animals).

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website

Uppsala University  is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.

The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.

Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.

Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
